Can Cloth Speak (An Ethnography on Bangladeshi Tangail Saree)
This is an ethnographic documentary on the famous Bangladeshi sarees ( A long piece of cloth women wear in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal and many other countries as traditions). I love sarees and from that passion I tried to capture some details how saree is made and marketed and its vulnerabilities for generations to know about. Tangail saree has been considered as UNESCO heritage however, it is still struggling with lots of limitations to flourish its beauty and values. The local village weavers; their men and women create this world heritage, consists of materiality of a multi-layered fabric with different patterns, colour, and designs with extraordinary talents and experiences but lack potential rewards. Specially, this tradition is an ancestral knowledge that is speaking of its people, place and culture. I hope this 'traditional textile' overcomes its challenges and finds it spotlights in ever-growing fashion industries of the world!

i've never seen handloom work before, so that was pretty interesting. very cool how these folks maintain generational knowledge parent to child over many years and stay in the same business. I don't think we do this in North America really? do we handloom? I mean we crochet I guess :P that's about it
Thank you David! I don’t know about North America but I have seen nice blankets hand stitched, but definitely not sarees. 🙂
This video is such a trip down memory lane! My mom, a working woman, adored wearing elegant handloom sarees. The sarees in this video are gorgeous and really highlight the skill and dedication of the artisans. Thank you, Tahsina, for this fantastic production!
Oh wow!
Thank you so much for such a nice comment dear Alina! You also made me nostalgic too about memories of our mothers who used to wear cotton sarees! ❤
