#StrangeDarling (2024): 7.5/10 Director: JT Mollner Runtime: 97mins ⠀ Strange Darling is the type of film that needs to be seen with next-to-no prior knowledge going in. Shot entirely on 35mm, it certainly looks the part - a grainy-looking, colourful throwback with captivating cinematography from first timer and actor Giovanni Ribisi (‘Ted’), and with enough daring twists, turns and gore to help make you squirm in your seat. ⠀ Willa Fitzgerald (‘Scream: The TV Series’) and Kyle Gallner (‘Smile’) offer up great lead performances both collaboratively and independently. Fitzgerald in particular is a force to be reckoned with throughout. It’s a deliciously dark concept, with Tarantino-esque chapter jumps that show a lot more of the thrillingly intense cat-and-mouse chase from the outset, and fill in the narrative gaps later on - it feels essential to take note of every detail as a result. ⠀ Will it blow everyone away? #BeetlejuiceBeetlejuice (2024): 7.5/10 Director: Tim Burton Runtime: 104mins ⠀ After almost 40 years we have a Beetlejuice sequel, once again helmed by Tim Burton, and starring Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara. Much time has passed in Winter River - now it’s Lydia’s turn to play the role of mum to estranged daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega), who desperately needs her help when she opens a portal to the afterlife. ⠀ Perhaps most impressively, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice perfectly captures the spirit of its predecessor - opening with Danny Elfman’s celebrated theme - as well as its devilishly dark and twisted humour. The film is rip-roaring fun from the outset, with Michael Keaton on top form once again. Burton really pushes the boundaries for the film’s age certificate, making use of a great blend of freaky practical and digital effects. ⠀ In terms of issues, there are a lot of different plot threads that don’t fully come together in the end - Monica Belluci’s vengeful bride Delores for example feels cut off from the central story for the most part, and essentially wasted. #TheInstigators (2024): 5.5/10 Director: Doug Liman Runtime: 101mins ⠀ New Apple TV film The Instigators doesn’t quite deliver on what could’ve been a fun and memorable romp given its premise. It stars Casey Affleck as ex-con Cobby, alongside Matt Damon’s bankrupt former marine Rory - the pair attempt to steal a stash of dirty money from a corrupt politician, but are forced on the run after the job goes awry. ⠀ Set in Boston, the pair are able to slip back into familiar surroundings and accents throughout. The on-screen chemistry is there, which could have something to do with Damon’s long-standing friendship with the Affleck family, but the film itself is perhaps too laid back on the whole for its own good, making it feel lethargic. ⠀ There are a few chuckles to be had here and there. ‘Cobra Kai’ favourite Paul Walter Hauser and Michael Stuhlbarg (‘Boardwalk Empire’) get in on the act, and Hong Chau (‘The Whale’) is always a welcome addition, this time as Rory’s shrink Donna. The original Alien Trilogy are all tied at 1# in my opinion because i like them all the same for separate reasons ❤ Alien : Covenant is 2# in my book just because of Fassbender , the Neomorph scenes & the ending ❤ Prometheus is 3rd because it wasn't meant to be a Xenomorph film , it was only made to answer the biggest question every real Alien fan has been asking since 1979 which is : who is the Space Jockey??? That's literally the only thing u need to care about in this film & nothing else!!! AVP is 4th because it's a fun movie & has great practical effects but falls flat for not making it R rated!!!! Resurrection is 5th , I literally turn it off after the underwater scene ends because everything after that is just ridiculous!!! AVP Requiem is last & always will be & I have nothing else to say about it 😂 Haven't seen Romulus yet but I'm sure it will at least make my top 2 or 3 after the OG Trilogy!!!!! A poor film all round. ⠀ #Alien3 Coupled with a troubled production, Alien 3 felt like a betrayal after killing off fan favourites in favour of, aside from a few good moments, a slog of an ‘Alien’ film. ⠀ #AlienResurrection Alien nipples aside, Resurrection was entertaining for the most part, with a fun Joss Whedon script. ⠀ #AlienVsPredator The two juggernauts finally face off! Stripped back on the gore, but AVP was a perfectly fine and fun film for the fans. ⠀ #AlienCovenant Effective ‘Alien’ claustrophobic horror with Michael Fassbender at his best as the central driver for the film. ⠀ #Prometheus Ridley Scott’s prequel was visually fascinating and thought-provoking, delving into the philosophical questions surrounding the engineers. ⠀ #AlienRomulus Fede Alvarez’s back-to-basics approach felt like a return to its ‘Alien’ roots, with the aesthetic, atmospheric horror, and practical effects. ⠀ #Alien Ridley Scott’s original was mesmerising slow burn sci-fi, with atmospheric horror elements that grew as the film reached its intense finale. ⠀ #Aliens Our number one. #AlienRomulus (2024): 7.5/10 Director: Fede Alvarez Runtime: 119mins ⠀ It’s been 45 years since the release of Ridley Scott’s sci-fi masterpiece ‘Alien’, and this weekend we have another entry in the franchise in the shape of Alien: Romulus - set 20 years after events on the Nostromo. Co-written and directed by Fede Alvarez (‘Don’t Breathe’), it sees a group of young space colonists set out to raid a nearby derelict space station in order to grab the necessary supplies needed to escape their mining colony lives. ⠀ Romulus emits the feeling of a legendary band on a comeback tour. All of the greatest hits play out, with nods to various entries in the series that are sure to please fans. Fede Alvarez perfectly captures the ‘Alien’ aesthetic, right down to the slow burn world building, retro-future tech, and sound effects, accompanied by an atmospheric score from Benjamin Wallfisch. The use of practical effects, sets and ambient lighting make the film look fantastic. ⠀ For the most part it rocks, with Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson outstanding as adopted siblings Rain and Andy. Some of the film’s newly introduced material though, particularly towards the end, may prove divisive with hardcore fans - as will a glaring use of CGI in the film. Still, its back-to-basics, claustrophobic approach is effective in building real tension, making for a thrilling and enjoyable ride. #Borderlands (2024): 3/10 Director: Eli Roth Runtime: 101mins ⠀ It’s no secret that video game adaptations are one of the tougher niches to get right. Lately though they have fared a little better, in the shape of ‘The Mario Bros Movie’, which grossed over $1 billion, and Amazon’s ‘Fallout’ series. And then there’s Eli Roth’s Borderlands, based on the hugely popular video game series, which fails on almost every level. ⠀ Reportedly conceived as an R-rated feature, what’s left is a mundane, sterilised mess that is tedious to get through after mass reshoots, rewrites and heavy edits. The film’s trailers clearly exhibited ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ influences amongst others, but Borderlands gets nowhere near it - a muddled and meandering treasure hunt to find legendary keys that unlock a much sought after vault. ⠀ Cate Blanchett is perhaps the standout (if there is one) as gun-for-hire Lilith. She at least looks as though she’s having a fun time, with Jack Black’s Claptrap raising the occasional smile. Otherwise though, it’s incredibly bland, with a baffling and horrendous script. #Trap (2024): 7/10 Director: M. Night Shyamalan Runtime: 105mins ⠀ M. Night Shyamalan’s latest feature sees father Cooper (Hartnett) and his teenage daughter Riley (Donoghue) attend a highly anticipated pop concert headlined by Lady Raven (Shyamalan’s real-life daughter Saleka). Unbeknownst to them at the time, it’s all a rouse in an effort to trap a dangerous serial killer, whom the FBI know will be in attendance. ⠀ Shyamalan’s filmography has seen its fair share of up’s and down’s through the years. Trap is a cat-and-mouse thriller that falls into the former camp for the most part - filmed from the point of view of the serial killer, as he attempts to outwit the surrounding authorities. Josh Hartnett (‘Oppenheimer’) is great in the role - a genuinely loving father that tries to appear friendly to those he interacts with, but something just feels off the whole time. Hartnett balances his performance to great effect. ⠀ The first half of the film and the concert itself are undeniably more effective than its second half, as the plot hurtles toward an uncertain conclusion, and Cooper’s mask begins to slip. On the whole though, Trap is certainly an M. Night film you can have fun with if you don’t look too deeply into the logic of some of its character and dialogue choices. ⠀ What did you think of Trap?
