Back on trail | Te Araroa diary part two
eek, already been a year and a half since we finished our journery on Te Araroa, but better late than never I suppose! 😅 Hopefully not such a long wait until the next one 👣 Sorry for the bad audio mixing - idk how these things work.

Learning to go with the flow | Te Araroa diary part one
Переглядів 2,5 тис.2 роки тому
Hello hello! 👋 I didn't expect to be uploading another video so soon, but all in the lesson of going with the flow, eh? Bryny and I will be starting again from Huntly in about a weekish so any advice or suggestions before we hit the trail again would be great 👣 Other gear updates include a new mic! I did end up losing my small one on 90 Mile Beach 😔 I'm still learning to edit vids properly and ...
Walking the length of New Zealand | my Te Araroa gear list

Hello! I'm Charlotte and I'm about to start my thru-hike of Te Araroa with my boyfriend Bryny. I thought I'd kick off this channel with a video on the gear I'm starting out with and hopefully when I'm back, I'll have some more cool videos to upload! (Apologies for the not great audio, I'm still learning and need to upgrade my mic) 📸 Instagram charlotteylowe 🎒 My gear list kit.co/...

Great boots. 😊🌿 🙆🏻♀️ 👍🏽 ❤️ I have full grain leather boots for tramping.
Great and honest video. Wondering if you made it till Bluff in the end 1,5 years later?
Stay tuned, Xavier! ☺️ Been very very slow with editing, but part 2 is coming soon! 🥾
Hi Charlotte! Thanks for your vid. Just wondering how the helium held up on trail? I was thinking about purchasing it for my hike next year but had concerns it might not fare well against some of the more overgrown sections of the trail?
Hey Rachel, thanks for watching! I found it fine against overgrown sections, buuuut there was a lot of heavy rain the season we went and found once it got fully soaked through, it lost a lot of it's water repellancy (even after reappyling with Nikwax), which was pretty disappointing! I would maybe look for something a little heavier and defiantly with pit-zips!
Great vid showing your gear. I like how you dehydrated your food. Where did you buy your mylar bags from, and what size do you recommend?
Thank you! Slowly working on getting the rest edited! I ordered my mylar bags from survivalsuppliesaustralia.com.au and I got the size small/16oz :) They worked out great for one meal!
You have to harden off your feet with shorter trips before the big one in my opinion.
Thanks for such a great video! Hope you are having an awesome time on the trail :) I'm curious about the sleeping bag though, a 11 degree comfort rating seems like it wouldn't do much to keep you warm. How have you been finding it so far?
Hi Summer, I'm pleased you liked the video! I haven't been too cold in it yet, but of course I wear my base layers if I find it a bit chilly 😊
The best for your journey my friend 🤗🤗
Thank you!
Cool video, for the Sawyer a length of 6mm clear hose pushed on the end then hang it from a branch etc gravity speeds it up maybe 2min or so to do 1.5 liter bottle
Thanks for the tip Darrin!! We switched to the sawyer micro but will have to give that a try 😄
Plus northland would’ve been knee-deep mud
Yeah, no reason to do long stretches of road walking, I would’ve skipped it too.
and we found out we weren't the only ones! definitely helped us feel less guilty about it 😄
As someone from the lower Auckland area who has spent plenty of time up in northland over the years I really can't blame you for skiping all the road sections. Hopefully the rest of the trail goes smother for you guys
Thank you Zach! Been going smoother so far 😄
That is a great resupply box. Do you make your own powdered eggs? Or which kind of powdered eggs do you buy?
Thankyou! I bought powder eggs from Keto Store NZ ( ketostore.nz )
I think cycling should be an acceptable alternative to walking on the road sections..
Very true! 😄
Tramping. Walking. It's walking. There's no hitch-tramping . . . hmmm.
But there is hitch hiking! 😁
What is your Instagram account name?
@charlotteylowe 😊
That is exciting! Good luck and all the best for your journey.
Thank you, Jamila! 😊
Best of luck for your trip Charlotte. I have two questions for you. 1. What camera are you connecting to your Peak Designs bracket? 2. Can you explain where you got the bags that you packed your dehydrated meals? Thanks and all the best.
Hi Scott! Thank you very much 😊 I am using the Canon m6 mark ii, just with the lens it came with (I'm quite new to cameras and lenses so started out simple!) And I used mylar bags with oxygen absorbers, which I purchased from survival supplies Australia, they were surprisingly hard to find here in NZ! survivalsuppliesaustralia.com.au
Great stuff Charlotte
Thank you 😊
Nice to see people hiking in the different environments, and how they adjust to the conditions along trail. Thanks for the vid.
Thanks for your feedback! 😊 Lot's of improvements to make for the next vid too 😄
Haha….I cut half the handle off my toothbrush, cut my towel in half and took a quarter size of your panscrubber. We were at a camp where a girl was cutting the labels out of everything…..basically, you get super paranoid about weight….. You’ll need a sh*t shovel at some point. We found a portable solar panel very helpful to charge our power bricks during the day. Hope to see you on the trail….we start NOBO from Bluff next week, hoping to get to north of Palmerston N where we had to leave the trail in 2019. Btw, I love your sun hoodie.
I'm trying not to be too paranoid about weight, as long as I can carry it safely then I reckon I'm all good 👌 also found I can dig a sufficient poop hole with my trekking poles! 😂 Would definitely recommend a sunhoodie, made it along 90 mile without any sunburn 😎 All the best for your hike, looking forward to seeing you on trail!
Good like. I'll be starting soon as well. 🙂
Thanks, Daryoush! See you out there 😄
Hi. Looking forward to following your journey. Have fun!
Thanks Ray and Jo! 😊
I like the idea of dehydrating your own food... Liked this vid, look forward to following your progress. All the very best to you both!!
Thank you, Christopher! 😁
Hi Charlotte. I am doing the SI only starting 28 Dec so enjoyed your video - lots of similarities re spreadsheets, food etc. What base weight have you ended up with? I am aimimg for 8kg which is proving an interesting exercise. Anyway, enjoy your trip and I'll say hi if I see you on the track. kevin
Hi Kevin! Thanks for leaving a comment, I'm please you enjoyed my vid! 😄 My base weight is around the same as yours. I suppose it's trying to strike a balance between weight, safety (both too heavy and too light) and comfort. I know I will be sending gear home at some point! I hope you have a great time on the trail, it would be great to meet you out there! 😊
Hi Charlotte, all the best and good luck for your hike! I am keen to see your progress and all the ups and downs you will have to cope with. I plan my own through hike for next season, and I´m allready quite excited ;-) Cheers from Hamburg (Germany), Arne
Hi Arne, thank you very much! Hopefully I'll have a new videos uploaded after we finish 😊 And good luck for your own thru-hike next season! TIme will fly and you'll be hitting the trail in no time 👣
Arne Ge are you aiming for the season of 23-24? I'm hoping to aim for that as well. 😊 I'm a Kiwi. I'm tossing up between TA and Nepal's Annapurna Base Camp Trek... 🤦🏻♀️ 😅
@@GypsyGirl317 Ah, you are referring to my avatar, the Bodnath Stupa. I’ve been in Nepal three times and did the Annapurna Sanctuary Treck in 2016. It is quite an adventure, but not too hard to survive. I think it’s not comparable to the TA, because you’ll make it within approx 10 days versus the 3000 km of the TA, half a year? I’m quite far in planning my through hike in the next season, I’ll go SOBO starting in October’23.
@@GypsyGirl317 where in NZ are you living?
