    Excellent film l've seen countless times . Great actors and a cynical ,war weary and jaded late 60's feel to it with no gung ho , OTT scenes and believable characters heartily sick of the war and just wanting to survive .The opening scene with the Chaffees barrelling down the road while firing on the 88's which have opened up on them from the opposite bank is one of my all time favourites as is this Street fighting scene in a German Town .

    What I always liked about this movie is that it portrays both sides as humans. Not that I am fan of the Germans but too many war films portray them as stupid brainless and dehumanized creatures which I really hate.

    The film was made in 1968, just before the "Chechoslowakian Spring" on wich the local Communists decided to introduce a more modest way of Communism... The land was under the influence of the USSR. The Kremlin did not accept this, and they invade the country with force. Tanks against peaceful and amazed civilian protesters.... The filming had just ended, and the whole filmcrew and actors had to leave the country fast. Now the real Sovjet tanks were rolling in the streets... How little is changed..... Now this former Warschaupact land is with NATO. People wonder why, and blame NATO for expension towards the East... Well. In 1968, the border NATO, Warschaupact was halfway Germany, and Europe. Former Warschaupact country's know how it is to be under the boot of the Kremlin....

      You talk shit. It was Most, not Pilsen (I doubt you even know where Pilsen lies), and it was abandoned because of the coal mining. Therefore the rest of the abandoned city was used for various war movies. It had nothing to do with any "being German city".

    Cannot find exact info but I doubt they use M24 Chaffee in the real battle. Most likely M4 Sherman were used. However the movie maker cannot find enough M4 to do the scene, this was made way before CGI was available.

    • @aaronblaylock2092
      @aaronblaylock2092 3 місяці тому

      That was common of that time. During the filming of Battle of the Bulge, they used Chafees and as tiger tanks they used Patton tanks from the Korean war as there was a big surplus of them available.

    • @dcr66

      In fact M24 Chaffee's would be correct for that period of WW2. The M24 was a light tank replacment for the M5 Stuart tank and the first ones arrived in the European Theater in December of 1944. This is actually one of the few WW2 films that had period correct tanks in it.

    • @Peter-dj8dv
      @Peter-dj8dv 2 місяці тому

      Among tank nerds it is well known that the attack was led by four brand new M26 Pershing tanks. The M24 is correct for the period, and the 9th Armored Division probably had some.

      I can't speak for am M-24 but I witnessed a firing demonstration of an M-60 back in 1975. Believe me, that main gun made a boom like thunder and the ground shook 75 yards away! Tank guns don't go "Pew-Pew!" That's an added sound effect. Why they chose that one I have no idea.

      @@wayneantoniazzi2706I was in a tank battalion in the Corps in the 80s, and spent 4 years with those M60s. The ground shook and vibrated from the main guns going off. A good indicator of how loud they were is that I get a monthly stipend for hearing loss from those 4 years. 😂😂😂 A funny story that I tell people is that in our maintenance office we had an Army poster advertising the M1 Abram’s and we still had the M60 😂😂😂 In addition to the M60 tank, we were still using the Colt 1911 pistol, the PRC 77 radio, and the M16A1 Vietnam era rifle for a while too, while the Army Doggies had the new toys. 😂😂😂 To any Army Doggies reading this, don’t be mad, we Jarheads love you guys! I saw that aforementioned M-60 demonstration on the tank firing range at Camp Lejeune in 1975, this was part of my Basic School company's BASCOLEX excercise. Maybe there was more than one range, I was only at Lejeune twice, but as I recall the impact zone was on the far side of the Intracoastal Waterway. It was a pretty unforgettable experience.

This region was always (almost a thousand years) a part of Czech Kingdom and yes Czech Kingdom was a part of Habsburg monarchy for some centuries and yes there was German ethnic population too, but there never was anything called Sudetenland, this was just a nazi construct.
