Deer Splashing in Shallow Pools
I discovered that Whitetail Deer were responsible for muddy water in these small pools. I don’t know how to explain their behavior. This doesn’t happen every day, but it’s not uncommon to see it occur a couple of times each month.

Aquatic Beetle Larva Shoots Mud Ball at Spider
Переглядів 1077 років тому
A small wolf spider stalked the mud flats. It was particularly interested in the movement of what appeared to be a small insect near the edge of the pool. What wasn’t immediately obvious was the fact that the small insect was held in the jaws of a much larger aquatic beetle larva. The spider finally attempts an attack on the small insect, but is driven back when the beetle larva begins to thras...

Older Edwards’ Hairstreak butterfly larvae feed only at night and spend the day at the base of Blackjack Oaks, hidden in cavities constructed by Allegheny Mound Ants. Near sundown, the larvae leave their shelter and begin climbing the tree. Each larva is accompanied by its own cadre of ants. From the time they hatch until emergence as adults, the Edwards’ Hairstreaks are accompanied by ants. Th...

    • @stevewillson1170
      @stevewillson1170 4 роки тому

      Males are the only ones that call. They generally arrive first at the breeding pool and their calls alert the females to the location of suitable breeding habitat and the availability of males.

    Does this fly want to lay an egg on the wasp?

    • @stevewillson1170
      @stevewillson1170 4 роки тому

      The fly is laying eggs in the egg chamber where the wasp is storing spiders to serve as food for the wasp larva. The fly larvae will feed on the spiders, leaving the wasp larva to starve. More info can be found here bluejaybarrens.blogspot.com/2018/08/pipe-organ-mud-dauber-wasp-and.html
