This song nearly broke my guitar playing back for months AND MONTHS!

Great! I don't know if you will agree or if it could be constructive to you, but maybe those chords staccato chords that start at 0:37 are too on tempo and lacking groove. Looking at John's version, if feels like he plays those two chords a little ahead of the beat and there's some rubato. Other brazilian fellow here said something about bossa and it's true. It's a very groovy style that may help you develop more of those weird rhytms. Always recommend picking some João Gilberto and getting to know songs like "Pra que discutir com Madame". Nonetheless, your version of Neon is already way better than I ever could, good work! Congrats!

Hey, I stumbled upon your video and really enjoyed seeing the progress and persistence you have in improving. Reading the notes you made in the video description, I think a big part of the issue you seem to be facing is with your right hand. If I could offer any advice as someone who also loves playing neon, I'd suggest you try working on some Brazilian bossa nova songs. It might feel a bit boring at first, but it helped me IMMENSELY to develop the feel in my strumming hand. Even John himself clearly shows in some of his live performances that he drew a lot of influence from bossa nova when composing neon. I wouldn’t recommend the cliches like "Garota de Ipanema" or songs like that, but rather something from Jorge Vercillo ("Ela une todas as coisas" or "Monalisa") or Djavan (his song "Samurai" is really interesting), or some newer stuff, so that the experience isn't too overwhelming. I really believe it would add a lot to your neon performance over time, once you have that bossa nova muscle memory in your right hand. Good luck! I hope this makes sense, and keep pushing forward because you’re so close, now it’s just about polishing the details!
