Making a Mini Encaustic Painting
In this video I show you a quick look at the process of creating a tiny encaustic painting! First, I tape off the edges of my panel so wax doesn't drip on them, then I glue a photograph (inkjet printed) onto the panel surface. Next, I add a couple layers of clear encaustic medium and fuse it. Then I layer another image printed on translucent vellum by heating it with a heat gun until the wax melts through. Then I fuse it all and voila!

      The white thread alternates holes, so sometimes it is in the small and sometimes in the slot. I use 2 white background threads for every patterned thread so it’s an odd number

    Not sure what your ethnic heritage is specifically (my great grandparents emigrated here from Lithuania), but the Lithuanian Folk Art Institute is a fabulous resource. As a member, I was able to download a pdf of the book Lithuanian Sashes, which is over 300 pages :D There are pages upon pages of digital sash images that could be used to make a pattern. I'm just starting out, so I'm not at the level. I was just super excited about it, lol

    Are alkyd paints compatible with encaustic medium? I can’t seem to find an answer to that anywhere, or whether water mixable oil paints are compatible. Alkyd paints are oil paints that in pretty much all respects are the same as oil paints except the oil binder has been altered to dry really fast compared to oil paints, it will be touch dry in 12-24 hours (& possible to varnish in as little as 30 days, though you wouldn’t varnish with encaustics obviously). I really don’t want to buy paints that I can’t use with encaustics!

    • @danaharrisseeger
      @danaharrisseeger 24 дні тому

      I believe they would be. As long as they are not water-based, they are most likely compatible. I usually fuse oil paint lightly after applying, and a fast drying oil wouldn't make any difference. Best you can do is try a little on one of your paintings. If it just beads up or peels off, then it is NOT compatible, but if you apply it, fuse it lightly and then try to rub it off and it stays, then compatible!

    • @danaharrisseeger
      @danaharrisseeger 6 місяців тому

      Thanks for asking! I know from years of experience and working with multiple mediums that yes, you can paint encaustic over acrylic. The main thing is you want an absorbent surface for the encaustic to stick, and if you keep the encaustic thin or make sure that you mix in something absorbent such as marble dust (calcium carbonate) add collage with paper that has a tooth, etc. your encaustic won’t peel or fall off over time. Hope that helps!

    Hi there, What acid-free quality provides to printmaking ???

    • @danaharrisseeger
      @danaharrisseeger 8 місяців тому

      Hi there, paper has a tendency to yellow over time when exposed to air and light, especially if it contains acid. You will notice old newspapers that are brittle and discolored. Acid free paper doesn’t do that so it is archival and preserves the integrity of the artwork as it was first made. Cheers
