A good way to avoid being "triggered" is by not getting "triggered". Also maybe not everyone is interested in the full flavor of you and your beliefs. Idk, maybe talk about the weather or neutral things. Also, if ppl are being hateful, well the hell with them. The greatest way to empower others is by being offended by what they say.

I just watched all two hours of this conversation :) It was so wonderful thank you Tanya and thank you to both the interviewers. Have you read Emergent Strategy? I just read it and I am so passionate about exploring this side of social justice work now. I'm excited to dive into all of your other videos!!

This is great advice. AND it sounds really hard at the same time; it takes a lot of awareness to be able to identify and shift your own perspective to match someone else's. I'm so glad you've identified and been able to spell it out so clearly. Thank you!

Absolutely SGP it is incredibly challenging! Often time it is something we as facilitators have to think about *every time* we get in front of a group.

I was thinking about one of the "rapid-fire" questions Sam asked toward the end of this interview: "What are three words that you would use to describe facilitation?" And I answered: "rewarding, difficult, fulfilling." Afterward, I realized that, due to what Chip and Dan Heath call "the curse of knowledge," those answers made sense in my head, but not too much sense, likely, to listeners. So I thought that now, outside the format, I'd make clear what I meant, in hopes that other facilitators can relate or stretch: 1. Rewarding: Each time facilitation happens (the event) is rewarding. 2. Difficult: This was perhaps most unclear. What I was getting at was springing off earlier discussion; and that is that facilitation isn't just something you take a few classes in and go out and do. It's not an easy street to a good living. It's a commitment. It's challenging. You can't just bail if things get mucky in the middle. And often, at the start, it's hard making a living at it, because not enough people realize the value that great facilitation can bring. (See how that would never come out in one word?) 3. Fulfilling: This is more than the "reward" of each occasion of facilitating. This is something longer-term, knowing that what you are doing matters each day and is contributing to making people's lives and the world a little bit better.

Erik, and Facilitation Team, This interview is so perfect!! I'm listening to it while I work... only caught a few minutes yesterday, but I have the opportunity to finish it today and I'm so happy to have the chance to hear what was shared. Erik, I love your perspective on things, hence why I shared so many copies of your book, I have a friend who still won't give my personal copy back to me... :p She keeps "forgetting it" every time she sees me :p I know exactly what you mean when you were talking about talking to people at the store in line.. I had a similar experience last week... actually almost weekly. It's a beautiful thing really. Sometimes I feel like I'm wearing a sign (invisible to me) that says... 'Hey I will listen if you need to share you heart, need a shoulder to cry on, or just need a friend' .... Thanks again so much for sharing and I can't wait to finish listening to hear what you have to say!

+LGHCREATION I can only guess this is the inimitable Lena! Thanks for listening in and doing what YOU do out there each day. Being a facilitator isn't just a job position. That's what I was getting at in the interview. In order to be effective, it has to come from a genuine place to see the world and the people in it move toward a better place.

+Chad Littlefield At least I refrained from referring to myself as a philologue, which would not have been in the spirit of facilitation (making anything any easier for anyone).
