Vanilla Home Overhaul Mods--Skyrim Anniversary Edition PS5
This video will showcase a number of mods which overhaul the original player homes in vanilla Skyrim: Breezehome, Honeyside, Hjerim, Vlindrel Hall, and Proudspire Manor.
Spoiler Warning: There may be some light spoilers for the quest "Blood on the Ice" when discussing Hjerim.
As always, please make sure to visit Bethesda.net and read the mod descriptions, as some of these mods have some pretty specific advice about where to place them in your load order, or what other mods they may or may not be compatible with.

I really adore the attention to detail in the TNF series of houses, but for some odd reason my character catches fire when walking through Vlindrel Hall's master bedroom doorway. I think it has something to do with the placement of the hearth in the vanilla version, but I'm not certain.
Really? I did not run into that when testing it, but maybe I didn't walk into the right place. That's a pretty big problem. I tend to always use the Hearthfire houses myself, so I haven't used many of the house mods extensively, although I used Whiterun TNF quite a bit on a few playthroughs.
Thanks for showcasing the Face Tattoos mod!
Thanks for making the mod :)
Hey what weather or graphics mod do you use?
In this video, I did not use any weather mod. I usually prefer to only showcase the mod in question so that it isn't affected by anything else. However, I have mostly used Obsidian, and more recently AAL. AAL has the advantage of including interior lighting, an audio overhaul, and some other tweaks, so it saves you slots in your load order. On top of my weather, I often use Cyan49's Brightness/Saturation/Contrast Changer to add in additional saturation because I like a warmer palette.
I love tnf whiterun but I think I will have to give breezehome 2.0 a try
TNF Whiterun is the only one I have ever used extensively. It worked well for me. I do appreciate the baths in all the TNF houses. And it's cool that it lets you go out on that balcony in Breezehome for people watching. As you can see, there were a lot of Breezehome overhauls compared to the other houses for Playstation, so there's a lot to choose from.
Does the mod replace all spiders or just those in caves?
I didn't play extensively with them, so I can't say with 100% certainty, but the various mods worked in the places I did go.
Keep up the good work my goto is tnf whiterun I do like Hobbiton but I accidentally went through the cave window once and fell through the map so it's a no now
Thanks, glad you liked it! I may do a video on mods for the vanilla houses. I have successfully used some of those.
That's the goal I've been working on a LO that includes a full overhaul for ps5
@@tomhahn9612 It is a challenge. But there are opportunities despite the limitations.
Woohoo for ps support !
Could you start fast alternate start in survival mode?
If you mean the AE survival mode, I haven't tried to do it but I can't think of why it wouldn't be compatible. If you are you are using survival mods of some kind, it might be riskier. I am just speculating, but I think likely it would work. It certainly does on PC. I don't think survival modes necessarily care how you start the game.
Hi, how did you activate Hearthfire Trophy Entryways Remastered? When I build the little house only the chest is there. I can furnish the little house as always. Do I need to build the larger house too and then change the little house into the entrance, outside at the desk? Then the Trophy Hallway will show up?
You are correct, the little house will be remodeled into the entryway of the big house. Then if you have the mod it can become a trophy entryway. I personally think that is a better entryway then the vanilla version, and unless you are really into trophies you won't need to consider building the trophy room as one of your wings when you get to building the other parts of the estate.
Hi! Awesome video as always! I have an issue with Heljarchen Hall Fortified. I love that mod but it's often glitching with the landscape. Does it conflicts with manor roads? And may I know where you put it in your load order? Thank you for your work!
Thank you for your kind words! I do not use Heljarchen Hall Fortified. I prefer Draco's Heljarchen myself, and I use all three of their Hearthfire mods. I put location mods after quest and environmental mods, so they are somewhere in the middle of my LO. As a starting place, I use a structure kind of like this: Major patches (like USSEP), Major mods that change a lot (like Werewolf Perks Expanded), Missions/Dungeon mods, environmental mods, then buildings and locations, then gameplay, then NPC's, then appearance, then weapons and armor, then crafting. If a mod author specifies a location, I follow their instructions and ignore my structure. If I have problems, I try moving things around to see if I can solve the issue and if not, I may give up on a mod. I would not consider myself an expert, but this has worked out OK for me for the most part.
Just a simple alt start wasn't just uploaded by me, I created it, its not a port :) thank you for featuring. There is no armour bug on your character like some of the alt start mods. Its not crucial for the dragon to fly over, you can just carry on.
Thank you for watching! And thank you for creating mods that will work on PS5. The reason I say "uploaded" instead of "created" is because it has become very complicated to know who actually wrote a mod at this point. Creators sometimes use different names depending on where they are posting their work, and as you point out many mods are also ported by a different person altogether. So I hope I didn't offend you and thank you for the clarification.
How do you choose your race and appearance with these mods?
It will depend on the mod. Most of them will put you in the character creator right away, and when you leave it you will be at the place where the mod begins. I have mostly used Fast Alternate Start or Realm of Lorkhan, and that is what they do--first you create your character visually, then you make your choices for starting the game. I believe most of the others did similarly, but I don't remember each one.
@@Lightstrider42Cool thank you
This is good
Keep up the amazing work
Thank you!
I would have used quick start Skip new game intro and my newest load order but I wanted to see how the intro looked with my load order. Otherwise I feel like that one is truest to the game
@@tomhahn9612 If you are trying to stay close to the vanilla game, that might be the best choice. If you like playing with unique character builds, Realm of Lorkhan is probably the most helpful in that regard. Just depends on your preference.
Awesome video! Out of these mods which one do you prefer?
Thank you :) Currently, I am using AAL, which is a combo mod that handles both exterior and interior lighting as well as a sound overhaul. However, I have used Relighting Skyrim and Luminosity very successfully in the past. The load order is important with them, but they work together.
@@Lightstrider42 good stuff, I will try that one out. Would love to see a load order video if that would ever be possible. You are the best at showing the difference between all the mods!
@@barretttaylor178 That is high praise, thank you! If I do a load order video at some point, I would probably do one only about those mods I always use. I goof around and experiment with things, so I think it would only be valuable to focus on mods I consider essential.
Is the deady bandits of skyrim safe to use on ps4
It depends on what you mean by safe. All mods carry a certain amount of risk. I found the mod to work as designed on PS5, so I imagine it performs similarly on PS4. You need to be ready to fight a LOT of bandits, though, as the numbers are kind of overwhelming. How it behaves for you will also depend on what other mods you might have installed and their load order.
@@Lightstrider42 I'm trying both one at a time
@@jermainefisher5387 how did that go
Great videos! I watched all of them because I was so unsure which weather mod I wanted to use, all of your videos showed them off nicely and helped me decide that I wanted to give Obsidian Weathers a shot! Thank you! :)
You are most welcome. I am glad you found them useful. Obsidian is a great choice and quite popular.
Do Heart of Azeroth or Dark Heart of Azeroth make performance issues? Or how can I improve my performance, what mods do you prefer? HoA is incompatible with Lighting Mods and Water Mods, although I think they are needed. Did you play with HoA?
I did play briefly with Heart of Azeroth. It includes a water mod and an interior lighting mod, so there is no need for additional mods. BeVeryofA does a lot of combination mods for Playstation since we have so few mod slots. This way, you can do three tasks with one mod. I loved the colors of Heart of Azeroth, but I also do enjoy more saturated, fantasy colors. If you like a darker aesthetic, it may not be for you. I did not experience any performance issues with it. If you have a good load order, you should be fine.
@@Lightstrider42 Thank you. Because of the good L.O. I commented under another video. Where did you put HoA in your L.O.? Dark Heart of Azeroth is a bit more cloudy and darker. I really love Heart of Azeroth, the same as you mentioned, because of its colors.
@@XenaDaZabomba I loades HoA around slot 14. I loaded patches and bug fixes first, then large scale mods like immersive movement, then new dungeons, then environmental. So, depending on your mods, it should be pretty early in your LO.
I am a german girl who has just started modding Skyrim on the PS4. I stumbled across your videos because I wanted input. Do you still play Skyrim? Thanks for your work with these videos, much appreciated! May I ask what L.O. you have? Not every single mod, just how you placed them? What mods first, then the next block etc. I am very confused, because everyone says sth else. Weather up or low, stuff like Pretty roads above or below city mods...things like that. Could you help me? Thank you and greetings from Germany. 🖤
Hello from the U.S.! I do still play Skyrim. It is a game I go back to periodically. It is like comfort food, like macaroni and cheese--I am unsure if mac'n cheese means the same in Germany as it does here, but hopefully you get the idea. I appreciate you enjoying the videos. In terms of load orders, I generally start by following a PC load order hierarchy. However, I incorporate any recommendations from the mod authors. Some of the mod authors also have Discords I have joined to get input on load orders, which can be helpful as well. You are the second person who has asked about load orders. I don't consider myself an expert, but perhaps I will make a video at some point discussing them.
One thing iv'e observed with the improved bandits mod is that it makes certain bandit chiefs static max level such as Ghunzul at Cracked Tusk Keep, full orcish armor with an orcish warhammer and will always be level 25, adds a bit of realism to the world that i love
The deadly bandit of skyrim safe to use I have a ps4
I really loved azerite aal but my game kept crashing so i settled on obsidian weathers
I have not had that problem with AAL. You could experiment with your load order and see if it is interacting with another mod poorly. However, Obsidian is a solid choice. I used it for a really long time. Unbeatable mountain fogs.
Did you like tls wildlife or set better I plan on pairing it with better animals
I have been using Birds and Flocks plus a mod I found called ZKG Better Critters (creations.bethesda.net/en/skyrim/details/9728/ZKG___Better_Critters). I hadn't tried it yet when I did this video, but I have found it to work pretty much as described. I don't have a lot of animal mods, honestly. My environmental mods are mostly lighting and landscape.
@@Lightstrider42 Don't know if you plan to but I would love to see what your load order is I really wish I would have found your videos before I started modding Skyrim
@@tomhahn9612 I might do a video on mods that I use the most or something. Not sure my load order would be helpful when it comes to the things I change around. I have been slowly working on another enemies video, but I have been distracted with rl and some other games lately.
I love the fact you're trying to compare mods. However, GORGEOUS as "SKYRIM" sunsets are, they've done an EXTREME unjustice here. I mean, you're trying to display the fine details of these mods and EVERY time you have these sunsets in the screenshots, they sun overtakes the shot. Most of what you see is just the silhouettes of the buildings. Half the time I can't see the changes in the mods, due to the time of day and the lighting. It seems counterintuitive to why you made the video. I mean, you might as well have shown screenshots during the night, in the game's time. Perhaps trying this again, at noon? That would have made a lot more sense. All the details would have shown up. The sun being overpowering in the background wouldn't have been an issue. Seeing an extremely dark silhouette and over powering sun really just make all the mods look the same, in those areas.
I like them all,can I put them together?
I myself never combine city overhauls. Other people have told me that they have sometimes had success doing so. The problem is that each overhaul is adding/subtracting things, which can lead to problems for the NPC''s, among other things. I once accidentally had two overahauls on Whiterun and it ended up making certain areas inaccessible. Of course, since we only have 100 mods allowed on Playstation, I am also reluctant to spend more than one mod slot on a city. If you experiment, I would not get too invested in your save until you have made sure it is working.
My big problem with some of these mods was that when I attacked them I did not get a bounty. I feel like my actions should have consequences.
That's interesting. I would not have thought about that aspect of the mod, it would have slipped under my radar. I wonder how complicated it would be to add the additions to the bounty list?
The children beast races with human voices is pretty weird. Good video though
The voices are a bit off--putting. It does add a nice touch of realism to see the children, particularly with the caravans which would likely be be families.
@@Lightstrider42i completely agree. I may download the mod anyway
@@BlanketGamer-fz4gx It's always a balancing act deciding which mods are worth the space when you have only 100 slots.
I am trying to decide between Lightly Populated Settlements and Increased Populations Named NPCs. Do you have a preference or opinion between the two. Is one more compatible with other NPC/City Overhaul mods in your experience?
I have more experience using Lightly Populated Settlements, which seems to do a good job of adding more people without adding too much strain, but that doesn't mean the other mod might not be just as effective. I simply haven't used it as much. I would not advise using more than one mod to add generic NPC's as it can cause problems. Adding specific NPC's, such as new followers, can often work all right as long as you don't add too many. As far as city overhauls go, I have not noticed a lot of issues with them. City overhauls can be much more of a problem with quest NPC's and named character behavior, as they may try to walk places that don't exist in the overhaul and get stuck in places, or they might seem to be floating in the air.
@@Lightstrider42 Thanks! Lightly populated Settlements seems like a great mod overall, I don't see as much about the other once since it's newer. In general do you use city/town/unique location overhaul mods. I am new to modding on PS5 and those mods look tempting, lot's of folks use them, but they seem really risky when it comes to Quest NPCs like you mention. I don't want to introduce more bugs into the game.
@@vinceguy1464The things that are most important to me when adding mods are things that make the world more immersive and add flavor. So I do use quite a few mods for cities and towns and such. Because we are limited to a max of 100 mods on PS5, I try to be efficient in what mods I select. Some cities (i.e. Windhelm) are notoriously difficult to mod, so in some cases it isn't worth the mod space (to me) if it might introduce a bunch of problems and crashes. But in other cases, it's hard to argue with how it can add character to certain locations. It definitely was helpful when there were reviews on Bethesda.net. It helped make decisions about which mods were potentially problematic.
@@Lightstrider42 I didn't know about the 100 mod limit, but it makes a lot of sense as to why mod bundles get made. My planned list is around 90 so I am still ok. Do You also use Immersive Citizens? I ask because its such a popular mod listed in LOs but from everything I read it's not supposed to be used with city and town overhaul mods so it feels like I need to make a decision between modding NPC behavior or town appearance.
@@vinceguy1464 Immersive citizens works with most Mods that modify cities. For some Mods, however, you have to place immersive citizens above in the load order for it to work correctly. It works the same way with Mods that modify interiors, like "small modified inn'' or "JK's interior", 2 mods that I highly recommend. JK's interior is really great, unfortunately it causes a problem with the navmesh of the NPCs in whiterun...
Good work on the video I learned some thing 😁 are you going to expand and discuss the other lighting mods as well?
I did exterior lighting in my weather series since those mods handle the lighting outside. Are there other lighting mods you have in mind? My current plans are to finish up my monster series (I need to get back at it now that the holidays are over), and then move on to a new topic.
This is very well put together! You're severely underrated!
I appreciate the high praise :) The weather videos were very time consuming, so I am pleased that found them useful.
La creatura is a new term for Todd Howard.
Bethesda going to give monetising mods another shot it seems. They couldn't do it when the world loved them during their Skyrim era so they certainly don't have a chance now that they have fallen from grace.
ok, the old had is coming of the drawer now. I will not be babied by Bethesda like apple does to it's userbase. I am not a fcking child.
Well said. Truly a lot of the companies we knew back then have deformed into monstrosities, while the good ones that stood with their morals to the last died out. Oh well. It do be like that
Jesus, this is like a definition of convoluted; useless change
I would agree. It is hard to know what the intention was in making this change. I can't imagine anyone tinkering with their load order needs to be given so many chances to change their mind. It feels more like a warning for someone who accidentally download mods--and how many people have done that? It's sort of like those warnings on hair dryers that tell you not to operate them while asleep.
I hate to say it, but... This is most likely a very deliberate attempt to make manual mod management more difficult for players, in order to pave the way for paid mods. In other words: a Bethesda.
Nice video dude 😎👍
Thank you for taking the time to watch it :)
Bethesda lost it's soul when it sold out. $$ 😕 For exhibiting the true spirit of the modding community, you are appreciated for all that you give back, and more.😊 No doubt this video will help some others. I'm a PC gamer, but love your channel and support both open source and cross platform. Everyone deserves the good things.
Is there a mod for building houses and bases?
On Playstation, there are mods for expanding on what you can do with Hearthfire homes. There are also a number of mods adding new houses. There isn't anything like the system for bases in Fallout 4, though.
please 10 best questline mods
There are not many quest mods for Playstation as they usually require custom assets, but I do plan on taking a look at what few there are. Also, additional dungeons. Probably I will be doing those once I finish up with the creature mods.
Nice video
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
Is there a rendering draw distance terrain on playstation?
You're doing a good job. Keep on going !
Thank you for the kind words :)
Thank you very much
Thank you for being a viewer :)
Does it crash less often on ps5 than ps4 with all these mods
I imagine it depends on the mods you are installing and the order. I tend to run close to 100 mods, which is the maximum allowed on Playstation. However, my priorities tend to be immersion and environmental mods, and I am careful not to pick ones that conflict with each other. I do have a couple of combat and spell mods, and a dungeon pack or two. I get a crash once in a while, but I quicksave a lot. I do think since Bethesda did that update a while back to address the 0KB issue a lot of people were having that I see many fewer crashes even on PS4.
Can I use all 4 overhauls?
I think you will run into problems doing that. Many of them are editing the same characteristics. Best case scenario, the last one loading overwrites the others, but I think you will likely end up things that don't play well with one another. If you experiment, let me know how it goes.
@@Lightstrider42 i figured, I did 2 of them no problems

Is there a draw rendering distance mod for PlayStation 4 or 5
I don't know, as I do not have an Xbox. I play on PS5 and PC.
What about PlayStation 4 or 5
@@mustafarahimi1012 I have not used such mods, but if you do a search on Bethesda.net for PS4/5 there appear to be some mods that address that issue.
Beautifully made video! Very informative. I'm looking for a new weather mod for my next play-through. Not keen on the very red dusk ones. Thanks to this mod I discovered Surreal Lighting and I think that might be the one I go for this time! Thank you
I am glad if the video helped you decide :) I used Surreal for quite a while, it has a very fantasy feel to it which I liked.
Currently I'm obsessed with skyrim . I played and beat it was back in 2012 . But now on ps5 with the lack of good games to my taste ( I'm 41 ) and recent amputation of my right thumb I can say this game has gotten me through a hard time and vanilla is just nothing like it . Great content keep up the great work
I'm so sorry to hear about the amputation. I am glad, though, that you have found an escape through Skyrim. It is one of those games that I find I return to again and again. Thank you for the kind words :)

Quite like Dawnstar Special Edition by God's Cauldron, if I say so myself
I am sorry I did not see this one or I would have covered it. Perhaps I will do a video on various mods I overlooked at some point.
