Nice video Profesor and I couldn't agree more. Early on I felt I had a lot of trouble learning sometimes and wasn't sure why. Then I noticed that when I understood the continuity, I would progress. When I eventually started teaching, I would brainstorm it on paper and have a plan of how everything fit together. It helped me but I think it helped the students a lot as well.
I agree and had similar struggles. Great to hear from you my friend.
One approach that I found interesting is to do situational sparring of sweep or pass from the position of the week for a few minutes at the beginning of class and then teach relate passing/sweeping techniques and then close class with more situational sparring. I have mostly seen this in kids class, but it seemed to drive the importance of the techniques home more deeply. Question for you. When it comes to new coaches (i.e. blue belts or purple belts that assist/teach some classes or run their own school), do you have any recommendations or suggestions (or even expectations if they coach at your school) on how they should approach their training/learning that may be different than the approach of a student who trains just for themselves? For example, do you recommend that they work on being more well-rounded in technical skill/knowledge or dive deeper in technical understanding than the typical student?
What I look for in BJJ or Judo coaches at my school is that they be fundamentally sound in their technique with a positive outlook and a joy for teaching.
One of my reasons for selecting your school over others after the trial period was/is the format. I’m now starting to understand some of the core fundamentals and how to look for things beyond the exact technique movements being learned. I feel that without structure and a curriculum built on reenforcing learned techniques, it would take a much longer time to build the necessary base knowledge to progress. That’s just me though.
Thanks for the feedback! I am truly grateful that you train at Semper Fortis and you have been a great addition to our team.

Awesome video, great information.
I'm glad it was helpful. Please let me know if there is any topic that I didn't cover in the "How to start a Jiu Jiitsu School " Playlist on my channel.
Yes 🙌 truth
Great to hear from you.
How bout someone who’s been all three at different points ? That’s when it gets strange; but forgiveness, love and grace trump imo.
There are always exceptions for every philosophy. My philosophy here is if someone is putting you in a bad place and/or abandoning you during hard times that you should really focus on and value the person who helped you through a hard time.

I decided to check out this video today and it is very interesting that these were the same benefits I had discussed with my wife as to why I want our children to train BJJ, even if they never compete. I have seen so much growth in all of them character wise and seeing them learn how to problem solve has been a blessing. I think my personal challenge was learning to change up how I rolled to conserve energy and strength because of burning out my forearms from grips or trying to use pure strength to "finish" submissions so much when I competed as a white belt. This led me to learning about using cupping grips, hooks with various joints like my elbows, ankles, and the crook of my knees rather than relying on gi grips.
Great insight! Thanks for watching and sharing your experience.

Anyone that tells you to fight for a purse or wallet against a weapon does not know what they're talking about. Self defense is giving up what ever they want.
I agree that I would not challenge a person with a weapon when i am unarmed who is just trying to steal something of monetary value. However there are some things I am willing to risk my life for against difficult odds and my family for sure is one thing.
@@semperfortisjiujitsu right, there might be unique situations that call for defending yourself/family.

Always wonderful to hear from you.
Who hurt you? I have never once been recruited at someone else’s open that nor have I tried to recruit anyone to my school. You’re old school and that’s cool. Not my bag though
No one hurt me, but thanks for asking. I have never been carjacked, but I realize many people have so just because you have not personally experienced something doesn't mean it does not happen and it is not a problem. We all have different opinions, experiences and views of the world and that is cool to me. Thanks for watching.
@@semperfortisjiujitsu fair enough. I wouldn’t go as far as assuming that I’ve never had anything violent happen to me. Bjj literally saved my life. I am a full-time teacher at my Academy. I have an amazing relationship with all of the gyms in my area where we all promote cross training. Jiu Jitsu has evolved more in the last 20 yrs than it has in the previous hundred. I truly believe that this is from promoted cross training and access to information. No secrets anymore. Just good vibes and Jiu Jitsu. Join us
I like the emphasis on attacking without compromising the position.
I agree! Thank you for watching.
Nice job Prof Jonathan
I agree! Professor Jonathan is an amazing teacher.

Is that a Khabib hat or your hair 😂
It is the young man's hair. Thanks for watching.
My brother and I roll half in the bag every weekend and the only thing that's been broken is the coffee table
I am glad that the training is working for you. Thanks for watching.
Only done it at parties lol
Thanks for watching!
Dope! Trying that one tomorrow. 😂
Let me know how it works for you my friend.
What you gotta do man, is eat LSD before a seminar with a master or grandmaster and drill/roll with as many folks as possible all weekend long. Competition is a different story but I think a reasonable amount of drugs and/or alcohol during the course of normal training is fine 👍
I appreciate your insights and advice. Thanks for watching!
Brewjitsu, at least in Houston, is basically just an open mat at a brewery. There's no intention of intoxication during rolls. I can get you in touch with the black belt that runs them if you want to discuss more. He's a good guy and would never hold a dangerous event.
I am sure the event is being held and run by well intentioned people. My point was that introducing intoxication into BJJ training is a recipe for potential disaster.
Lol where’s this at? I’m in Houston
@arielcruz6417 it is a pretty common open mat across the country.
have you had a lot of experience with marijuana? if i don’t go overboard i find it puts me in a flow state. i pay attention to detail more deeply and am more relaxed in a flow roll. thanks for making this video! i haven’t seen any other coaches talk about it yet.
Thanks for watching!
I apologize. I just realized I misread your comment. I thought you said "you had a lot of experience with Marijuana," but I reread your comment and you were asking "if I had a lot of experience with marijuana." No I don't have any experience with marijuana, because in my 33 years in the Navy it was not allowed and it is also not legal in San Antonio Texas and since my son is a San Antonio police officer I wouldn't want to be an embarrassment to him by using marijuana. Whether you are intoxicated by alcohol, marijuana or any other drug in your system I think is a bad idea when rolling your reactions and decision making is so critical to both you and your partners health. Many believe your judgement is not impaired by certain drugs, but look at how many drunk drivers kill people and each drunk driver thought at the time that they were sober enough to drive safely.
@@semperfortisjiujitsu Sorry, this mindset is clearly flawed and not based on current science or information available. I would bet there are more dude's showing up stoned in your academy, that if you were to say "no training high on weed" and had 100% compliance, you would have less than a handful of students at best. Maybe that's how you'd prefer it, but I doubt that is the case because you are a business owner and without students you'd have no school.
I am cool with people having different opinions than me. We can disagree and still be friends. Thanks for watching.
