Punk & Tomatoes

Bill MacKenzie likes punk rock.
Bill MacKenzie likes tomatoes.
Every Thursday, Punk and Tomatoes will premiere a short video of Bill talking about both, from his home near Washington, DC.
"Sometime 40 plus years ago, Bill MacKenzie found my 10-watt college radio program and became a regular listener. I would see Bill at shows, and even had him guest DJ once or twice. But my path soon veered away from radio and music to other things. But not Bill. He remained a devoted, lifelong fan and fanatic, supporting local bands and those traveling through town. A few years ago, I ran into him at a show and learned not only did he live up the street from me, but that he loved growing tomatoes. That night, the seeds of Punk & Tomatoes were first planted. And as tomato season is now here, my friend John Kinhart and I are going to post a new episode every Thursday, of Bill talking Punk & Tomatoes." - Jeff Krulik

Never before seen photos! On October 13, 1981 the band 999 played the University of Maryland Student Union, and of course Bill and friends were there. So was Diamondback photographer Hal Schmulowitz.

Bill watches Jeapordy every night, and has for years.
Lorne Michaels was not part of SNL in 1981. He had left in 1980 and the guy in charge was Dick Ebersol.
Mr. & Mrs. Missouri? Rock n Roll is from Missouri
I remember when Henry sold ice cream down the street.
BROOOOOO knocked loose is playing at the Jimmy Kimmel live on nov 26 shits gonna be wild , I hope they people throw down and security not know what to do
Saw the stones , steel wheels tour Syracuse NY
good rambuctious fun.
Fking awesome!!! 🤘🏽 shit ain’t like this anymore. Went to a punk show in Olympia. WA and I had to start the pit moving and I’m 40+ 😂 (FYI It was my daughter’s first show. I had to rock out so she knows how to roll)
I can only imagine how many people thought this was just a sketch like "There is no way people... _dance_ like that... right?!"
A bunch of jerkwads.
The problem there is that I guess most of these people basically Normie’s never experienced being in a mosh pit nor actually was televised of being in the Moshpit of course by today standers this is normal, but back in 1981 this was new
So many awesome conversations about this. I guess I’ll start the one about how the guys absolutely killed the sax at the end??????
😂 Totally! ☠️
Who else is here because they just figured out that Mr. Boddy is the dude from Fear?
Most OG punk ever
Worst "musicians" in history.
he's a literal legend
I'll never forget it was Fucking Killer !
I'll never forget it was Fucking Killer !
I tried uploading this years and it was copyright blocked🤔 Great to see it again
there's some cold ones . . way . down here .. on the bottom . . .
New Wave Theatre hosted by Peter Ivers played a role in inspiring this punk rock event on SNL.
This scared the record industry into signing only Britneys and Justins for the last quarter century.
They did have rage against the machine years later...so.
Oh shit Michael Davis, awesome
Damn cross dressers. Fuck that.
Who was a cross-dresser?? Lol...
"i dont think Saturday Night Live will ever have another hardcore band" Fear walked so Crisis of Conformity could run
I'm old enough and I remember it well. 😎
The smashing pumpkins 10 years later
I recently heard the Muzak version of “Satan is Lord” by Hellfire while shopping in the gift store at the Vatican.
THE FEAR SNL NYC TROLL
SNL was actually good back then. It died after Belushi
🤩🤩🤩
I remember seeing this and thinking . . . gee, where did this audience come from??? How is this happening? Good times!!
So they called the cops because a pumpkin got smashed? 😂 Then they definitely will not be able to handle the other shows that came through. Especially GG ALLIN 😮 OMG 😳😮 NO THANKS TO THAT STAGE RAPIST 💀🗣️🪖⌛
I can guarantee the real fun was in the parking lot 😂🤣😆😁🗣️😎👌🏿🗣️🪖💀🫂📢💯🎩🆗🎉
Weird, because in a former UA-cam video it said SNL would not deal with F E.A.R. 😂
😂 they actually wanted a real punk rock audience? 😲😂🤣😆😁🗣️👌🏿🪖💀🫂👻☠️🐦⬛🤣💪🏿😎👌🏿🆗🔥🫡⌛
Okay THESE PSYCHOPATH NARCISSIST DEMONIC UA-cam AGAIN 😂 🤣😆😁🗣️😇🦁🪖💀🫂👻☠️🐦⬛
Three things we learned from this video- 1. Never trash 30 Rock and Studio 8H, incite a riot to the point that the NYPD gets involved or in the case of Cypress Hill light a marijuana joint on national television unless you're looking to get banned from SNL. 2. Never anger Dick Ebersol, Lorne Michaels, Brandon Tartikoff or NBC. 3. Never allow John Belushi or anyone else to bring in whoever they want in exchange for a cameo.
So where's the footage? Click bait
I always loved this band!
Amazing video- and quite a collection
I know many of these guys. To live in DC late 70s was generational luck. Served ice cream by Henry and . Ian selling tickets at the Georgetown Theater at Wisc & O. Now a Compass Coffee though the neon sign remains.
I was in 7th grade my parents let us stay up to watch mr bill what a bonus
I never got punk rock. I was 17 in 1982 and was into Van Halen and such
Love the story but Lorne Michaels did not call anyone for this show lol

Lee Ving is such a fucking legend, loved his banter and the ever lulzworthy scene of him treating that "lady" acting like a man, like a man in Decline of Western Civilization.
Awesome piece of American punk rock history right there. Always wondered where Smashing Pumpkins got their name, I thought it was just something people in Alabama did for Halloween? Pumpkin…
Just saw fear last night at Dante’s in Portland. They still got it! Long live Lee Ving!
Man, Belushi was a real one. Such a badass. Who else could get punk rockers and corporate media together on a nationally televised live show. I bet there’s lots more stories like this he’s involved in that people don’t know.
