    I love this video. My friend and I just started doing some market and festivals in March. We don’t even have a website yet. 😂 But it’s so hard to know how to price things and if people are going to buy it. And it feels so vulnerable. But it’s nice to have my friend with me and hang out and people come buy and see something they like and buy it! The mystery bag sounds like a good idea as well.

    Do you know how sweet snuggles yarn washes compared to Bernat blanket? Great comparison too! I prefer a plushy soft yarn, but wasn’t sure how they launder for a baby blanket?

    I enjoyed hearing about your days as a farm radio show host. Perhaps those will be the days you look back on and think “what a ride 😎” hehe 🤭 Yeah the MakerSpace platform by Michael’s sounds pretty sketchy. When I first started watching crochet content on UA-cam this year I was one of those people that thought the prices were ridiculously high for some plushies. And it was videos like yours that have helped educate me on what people are actually paying for (handmade, quality, uniqueness, time). Your ‘why the crochet market is completely broken’ video is how I found you :) wishing you a more fruitful second year on UA-cam ✨💰

    Where do you buy the stiff felt? Or what’s it called. ?I didn’t see it on your google doc. I’ve been wanting it for other projects but can’t find it in my area and not sure what it’s actually called.

    • @WorksofWhimsyCrochetCo
      @WorksofWhimsyCrochetCo 7 днів тому

      Whoops, that's an oversight with it not being on the google doc. I've bought too many things for my business haha. You can get it at hobby lobby and on amazon (I've bought it specifically from both those places... it's probably at other craft stores like Michaels too, but I've not checked to be sure). Anyway, I just always type in "stiffened felt" or "stiff felt" and it comes up. Idk if that's its actual name but it does the job. Here's a link to it on amazon. This many sheets will last FOREVER even if you're making felt eyes to sell lol. amzn.to/46ToiTi

    My husband used to go to gas stations all the time before and during work. It was really draining our finances. Now inflation is causing our money shortage. It's really bad.

    • @WorksofWhimsyCrochetCo
      @WorksofWhimsyCrochetCo 12 днів тому

      Yeah, gas station food is already marked up some, but in this economy, it's really bad. We're feeling the effects of inflation over here too. Somehow we made more money last year than we ever have and we had moments where it was tight. This year, we're making even more money, but like you couldn't tell. It's been especially hard during summer because I'm not doing markets to prepare for the fall season, so like, we're literally late on our mortgage this month. Maybe too much info, but it is what it is lol. We'll get it paid but between inflation and the back to school shopping we've had to do, it's been a rough month and it's only half over haha.

    I am where you were at the beginning. Cannot finish a pattern because I get lost in the stitches. 😭. How did you eventually get better at seeing/feeling them?

    • @WorksofWhimsyCrochetCo
      @WorksofWhimsyCrochetCo 15 днів тому

      I wish there was a secret, but it's just kind of practice. The better you get at crocheting, the easier it is to crochet by feel. BUT I will say, I find it easier to see stitches with parfait chunky, specifically. It's got like a denser fuzziness to it, so it doesn't camouflage the stitches AS MUCH. So using that brand more might help you bridge the gap between regular yarn and plush/blanket yarn.

    • @WorksofWhimsyCrochetCo
      @WorksofWhimsyCrochetCo 15 днів тому

      I'd say I primarily use bernat blanket yarn and bernat baby blanket yarn. They have the same specs, but the baby blanket just comes in other colors. The vast majority of the variegated yarn I've used for mushroom tops has been bernat blanket for sure. Some of the color ways I use include: baby blue green, lovely blue, mini succulents (I personally really like this color way), pink dream, and pretty girl. There's more that I've used, but those are colors I pretty much always have on hand. And for chickens, I've used that "pink dream" color way to make chickens before as far as variegated yarn goes. But I really like bernat blanket tweeds for chickens too. I like the ivory tweed the best, I believe it's called.

      Yeah, for sure. This situation was less than ideal. I will say though, generally, I don't mind doing custom orders because it's like a game to me. People pick something that I wouldn't have picked myself to make, so I've been able to develop new skills that I wouldn't have otherwise. ON THE OTHER HAND, it's tiring haha. Especially when you're not personally in love with the project. Thankfully, most of the time, I can really get behind someone's concept and get excited about it, but not always, so that does make it tough at times.

    How do you deal with cash sales and taxes? (State/local and income tax) … Can you just accept the cash and not have to deal with the extra stuff?

    • @WorksofWhimsyCrochetCo
      @WorksofWhimsyCrochetCo 27 днів тому

      You can accept cash, but that doesn't exclude you from having to pay sales tax if your state requires it. My state does, so I pay sales tax for ALL transaction I make at markets. Cash, card, Venmo, etc. I have to file quarterly for sales tax, and to be honest, sometimes I officially add tax to transactions in the moment and collect it from the customer to remit to the state later and sometimes I just charge a flat price and then figure out what my revenue was from the quarter after the fact (by adding up cash sales, card sales, and sales through out platforms like Venmo, cash app, Zelle, etc, and then just figuring out what 6% of that is and sending that amount in.) Though, I don't know if it's true for everywhere, but Florida has a sales tax rate of 6% AND THEN on top of that, different counties in Florida have discretionary taxes that get added to that 6%. So for example, if I've done an event in Hernando County FL, the sales tax rate is actually 6.5% there because they that discretionary tax added. So if I made $500 at a Hernando County event, I'd send in $32.50 just for that event ($500 x 6.5% = $32.50). Make sure you're setting aside money after each event if you're doing it this way though, because in a quarter, you can make a few thousand dollars and have a pretty fat tax bill you'd have to pay. Like if I made $2000 in a quarter, which is pretty easy in most cases if you do 2 events a month, I'd have to pay $130 for sales tax alone. AND it's important to set aside money for Federal taxes too, because all your event income is untaxed, so in most cases, you have to pay taxes on it later. The recommended amount to set aside for Federal is 20%. So, basically, if you live in Florida, you need to set aside minimum 26% of your total revenue from each event just to cover your tax bills. Which is why I always advocate for pricing for profit, because there's bills to pay.

    I can do anything I want to with a pattern I paid for, except share it or give it away. I make Yodas, Coraline dolls, and spiderman. this was a free pattern and I have made two ducks. I would NEVER send work to a cheap Chinese company though.

    • @WorksofWhimsyCrochetCo
      @WorksofWhimsyCrochetCo 27 днів тому

      Kind of... If you're bringing Yodas and Coralines to markets though, make no mistake, that IS infringement. But outside of selling them, you can make them for yourself, for your friends, for you kids, to decorate your house. Whatever you want as long as you're not profiting! I've never made that duck pattern personally, but maybe I should lol. It really is cute. And by make, I want to clarify, I will be crocheting it. Though, I'm not against having one of my own designs turned into a real plushie one day. But it would be something to complex to really be a good market make anyway. But it would just be cool to design something like that OF MY OWN.

      Not really sure. The guy said the character was named Oliver Swift, and my customer was named Oliver, so maybe it's some reference to himself or something. I always go over all the details about the design and verify if the plushie is for an adult or a gift for a kid because that will dictate some of the design (it needs to be safe for a kid if it's going to a kid), but if the customer doesn't offer up the meaning behind the plushie, I don't fully inquire just because sometimes it's really personal, you know what I mean.

    My biggest problem is that Ashley did exactly what Temu, even Disney, and many other corporations do ALL the time with small artists and creators with original ideas. She took a free, not copyrighted image/plushie and began mass producing it without even crediting where she got the pattern from. Is it illegal? No. But it is horribly morally wrong. I think she is smart for trying to push her business forward and make it successful, but in my opinion what makes crochet businesses stand apart from mass produced clothing and TOYS is that they are HANDMADE. A person created these items with their own hands, that’s why I buy from any vendors that knit or sew because I can’t do that and I appreciate the time and effort and soul that went into it. I understand that her entire business is basically the duck now, so having a mass produced sewn duck will still fit her product line up, but to me I think a crochet business is meant to be handmade. Hire on another crocheter and pay them a wage if you can’t keep up with demand.

    • @WorksofWhimsyCrochetCo
      @WorksofWhimsyCrochetCo 27 днів тому

      I think it's morally wrong if you think it all the way through and then do it anyway, for sure. But I think she only thought it through AFTER the fact when someone pointed it out. The reason I think that Ashley is not immoral IS because she made the course correction after the fact. Some damage is still done even if she donates the mass produced version (which she definitely said she will not be selling them, so that's good), because now some Chinese manufacturers were basically given the instructions to make the plushie now. So they could go ahead and mass produce it for themselves still because I'm sure it would get bought, it's a cute a$$ duck. But she did try to do the right thing after the fact, so I'm choosing to give her the benefit of the doubt and believe this was an honest, though dumb, mistake. That aside, of course, I totally agree. Crochet is and will always be special. Plushies are cooler when they're handmade, for sure. No doubt in my mind. So this wouldn't have been my first thought...mass producing vs commissioning people to crochet. A thousand dollars worth of crochet ducks would still be a lot of ducks.

    Hello! If I'm only planning to do like 2 craft shows a year and I'm doing it as a hobby (don't have a business license), do I need to charge sales tax when using square?

    • @WorksofWhimsyCrochetCo
      @WorksofWhimsyCrochetCo 28 днів тому

      To the best of my knowledge, yes. But you'll have to look up the laws for your state (assuming you're in the US). And it's worth noting, in a lot of states, you don't need a business license to run a business. That's just something you'll have to look into. BUT, if you are in the US, please note that ALL income needs reported to the IRS. Not all income is taxable, necessarily. But you have to tell the IRS about all your income. In their eyes, if you're selling anything, you have a business, so you have to report your income and expense to them.

      I haven't watched this video in a while, so I'll do my best to answer it just based on using the square reader at every market. In the app, you can set your sales tax percentage. You'll have to look up what that is for your state, but also, look and see if your county is different. I don't know if this is true for everywhere or if Florida is super weird. But everywhere in Florida has a minimum of 6% sales tax on the purchase but some counties have a discretionary tax on top of that. So, if I do any events in, say, Hernando County, I actually need to collect 6.5% sales tax. So if the item price was $20, I'd need to collect $1.30 sales tax (which will be added to the total for the customer automatically, if you have your sales tax set). So the customer will pay $21.30 in total. Then later, I have to remit the $1.30 to Florida. However, sometimes I don't collect tax at the event. But if I made $500 at the event, I'll just pay $32.50 later after the fact. I hope that makes sense.

    What I don't understand is how you take the "build your own duck" idea and turn it into a mass-produced plushie. Not only does the item lose its handmade charm, but the customer can no longer choose how the duck looks. How does this solve the demand for what she was offering? I agree that she should have hired others to crochet the duck for her so that she could continue offering the product that her customers wanted - a "custom" duck. It was a strange thought process in my opinion.

      I see someone already explained the customization process for the actual plushie. It was a good idea as far as customizing the actual plushie goes. But I agree, this isn't really a solution to market prep even if it WAS her design because we're crochet artists. We crochet. An actual plushie isn't crochet. So even though this does give her more stock for markets, which is helpful, I definitely don't think this was the best way to go about. Like, I can see how she got there in her head, but most of the markets I do require the stock ALL be handmade. So this would be an issue in that sense. And I do think it steps on the fact that we're supposed to be handmade artists, and she took something previously handmade and made it not handmade anymore. All this to say, objectively speaking, I get her thought process. She bought more stock, that gives her more stock. But subjectively, this is a bit of a strange thought process from someone who is a handmade artist.
