Experiment #2 creating a katana hamon in a wood sword. Will it fail?
I’ve been wanting to make a wooden katana for a long time now. I want to make a really nice one for myself, but I also know that there are a lot of subtle details both about the Japanese katana, and fine woodworking that I need to iron out first before I can get to the point of making it. So for now, I’m experimenting with my bandsaw to see if I can get the low key look of a hamon. And then next I can work on any problems I find with doing it this way vs another way I have in mind, since this will be one of the first steps to complete when I get around to making my katana my way.

Yakisugi (shou sugi ban) SATISFYING RESULTS!! ASMR
Переглядів 497Рік тому
My first attempt at yakisugi (aka shou sugi ban): the Japanese art of charring the wood surface to increase rot and water resistance, in a natural way. Typically this is done with cedar, but this wood is for my boss to make a frame for a stained glass piece, and liked the aesthetics of yakisugi. I don’t have any cedar on hand, and for the size and weight of the glass, I chose to go with oak. It...

    I like the form a lot. Each tool is straight and well organized. I really like that. I'm concerned that I would end up pulling out multiple tools to find the one I'm looking for. I've been working on a french cleat based design that would hold the tools in a well organized pattern, like yours, and would clearly show the length, size, tip, etc., for each. Funny thing is, if I can't figure something out soon I'm just going to build one like yours (thank you very much!) and place labels on the holder. All of that said, thanks for the videos. I know they are a lot of work and I appreciate your approach. Cheers!

      Thanks for your kind words! And thanks for the comment! I really enjoy feedback, especially when they are as long as yours! I’m fortunate that my Phillips and flat head screwdrivers each have markings on the butt of the handle, so I can see which one is which, so then it was just a matter of putting the longer ones in front, where they would have a deeper area to dangle in, and the shorter ones behind. That’s also why I broke up the whole thing into tiers, so I could do rows for other styles. If you have more than what I have, you may want to consider more than one holder so it isn’t so huge, and also maybe a color coded system that matches the driver to a location? Just a few thoughts to help if you haven’t already thought of them. I appreciate the watch and subscribe, stay tuned for more French cleat ideas 😁

    After 30 years of teaching high school woodshop, I would have to call you out for using your table saw fence and miter gauge simultaneously without a spacer block when you were cutting the french cleats towards the end of the video... but I have to admit that I do it too when nobody is looking 👀😎 One question that I need to ask is WHERE did you get your "screwmates" from? I have a set exactly like the ones you use, but I would like to add a backup set to my collection. I have searched all over for them but keep coming up empty handed. They are some of the best that I have ever used. Nice elegant solution to a clamp storage problem!

      Thank you for watching and yes, I’ve been made aware that I am in fact doing things dangerously 🤪 Im assuming that by screwmates you mean the drawers under my workbench. I used to work at Home Depot, and one day they were replacing all of the specialty hardware bins in the screw aisle, and I was able to lay claim to three of them before they got thrown away. I love them too! When I built my workbench I made sure to angle the front of the units up just a little, so that they always want to shut automatically. Thanks again for watching, and believe it or not, I never took wood shop in high school, even though now I wish that I had. Check out the shop upgrade 1-5 review video I made that addresses some of my improvements to the upgrade now that I’ve used them for a bit

      @@imaginationingrained What I referred to as "screwmates" in your video were the bits that were in your drill to bore the pilot holes for the screws, hence their name, "Screwmate". They were originally made by Stanley Corp. out of stamped steel in various sizes. Sadly, they appear to be no longer available. When I saw them in your video, I was hoping that you had located a new source for them.

    Why drill holes then fill with dowels

    • @imaginationingrained
      @imaginationingrained Рік тому

      Ok, so, the problem with the way these were constructed, is that you saw me screw in from the back of the plywood into the 2x6. Normally that is not a problem, but the 2x6 was oriented perpendicular to the plywood. So that meant that the screws would be oriented in line with the wood fibers (screwing into end grain). When this is done, and force is applied, the screws can rip out of the end grain. So the dowels are inserted in a perpendicular orientation to the screws, so that when the screws are driven through the dowel, it acts like side grain, and increases the holding power. Does that make sense?

      No offense taken since I haven’t used a circular saw in my videos yet. Unless you are referring to the table saw. In which case, I use mine in such a wide array of configurations, that it would take just as much time to set it back up between cuts that it would equal the amount of time it takes to do the entire project. If I had a large enough shop to dedicate a crosscut table saw and a ripping table saw to leave one set up, then I could retire from my day job and do project videos full time. That would be lovely. Also, I have cut my fingers on my tools, and since then, have been very conscientious of my interactions with them. So thank you for your concern, but I have found what works best for me
