Garmin Varia Lights For Triking
My old taillight rusted out and I honestly tried very hard to talk myself out of buying some new lights for the trike. My willpower broke down after fifteen seconds and I ordered up the Garmin Varia UT800 and RTL515. Placing the tail light was a little tricky but I'll tell you how I did it.
Also, some griping about auto-immune stuff. Enjoy!

Drones can give you a brand new perspective on the areas you ride through. Many of today's drones fit well in the bags we can attach to our trikes. In this video, I'll talk about the current offerings of drones and what I'd pick if I were shopping for one today. Music - Fly Forever by Blue Phoenix
Autoimmune Fatigue and Exercise

Exercising while worrying about fatigue from an auto-immune disorder can be tough. You want to go further and faster but you'll get drained if you overdo it. In this autumn ride on Bethel Rd in Lexington, I'll talk about it from my trike. Music - Archari & Shimotsukei - Paradise (Blue Phoenix Remix), big thanks to Shumotsukei for letting me remix this amazing track

I got yet another new drone, the DJI Air 2S. I was concerned about size while triking, but it fits perfectly fine into my side mount bag. It's about twice the size of the Mini 2 and four times the weight. The tradeoff for better quality and features may well be worth it. Drones can enhance the riding experience by getting a new perspective of what you're riding past. Personally, the DJI Mini 2 has been great. Hitchrider Trike Rack Safety Tip - Clintonville, KY

In this video I'll present a quick fix for the Hitchrider rack sliding problem you may encounter. It's possible they sell an accessory to help with this, or perhaps there's another way to fix it, but this works pretty well for me. I'm riding my Catrike Dumont 30 miles just east of Lexington through Clintonville. The rolling hills and horses were perfect scenery against a sky full of interesting...

WTF. OVER $150. Can find the couple claps their wanting $50 for less than $20 all over
Good morning, I live in North Central Indiana, and my wife and I would like to travel to the Ohio River area to get a nice long trail ride along the river. Are there a few trails that you would recommend down there? Thanks
I don't know of any along the river, but the Parklands at Floyd's Fork near Louisville have an extensive multi-purpose trail.
I forgot to subscribe. Love your channel!
Your Varia radar should be mounted vertically for optimum detection distance. Refer to the manual.
Just watched this video for the first time today. I have Crohn’s Disease which is another autoimmune disease. First diagnosed way back in 1986. So I can’t speak to fatigue from the perspective of a newly diagnosed patient. But I do remember the fatigue whenever my condition flares. I’m mostly in remission these days. I know of an Ankylosing Spondylitis patient who experienced flares of his condition. So in the flare sense the 2 diseases are similar. I’m curious if your fatigue mostly occurs during flares.
The fatigue tends to get worse after exercise. It can take a week to recover from a light hour of triking these days. I don't think it's tied to flares, unless the fatigue IS the flare.
Eric, good to see your back on you tube. I wise you would look up Dr Ken Berry about the carnivore or better known as the proper human diet. It’s has helped me so much, I have been eating like that for three years I am 74 and ride a trike also feel better than I have in years. Look him up please
Hey Eric. Great to see you uploading again.👍
Thanks, how is your triking going?
@@TheGiantTriker struggling. But hopefully that's changing in the coming weeks 🙏 😬
I've always enjoyed your videos. Good to see you out again. We hope your health improves soon.
Nice to see you back and hope your stomach settles down
Sounds like a great system. What is your GPS system?
I've got a Garmin Edge 830. Pairs up with the lights very easily. :)
Saw ya! Post some more. Sure would like to see you on Wed. Ed’s club ride. Fridays David’s fork is great. I have in depth answers about bicyclists that blow thru. Starting with very few do it fast-without looking. Self fixing problem. I have a strategy.
Yep, I've been busy and haven't recorded in a while. Maybe soon. :)
For me, if I breathe cold air for long I start coughing. I wear 4-layers over the chest, that helps. For my hands, I use mittens with fold-away fingers.
You could also rub some paraffin (wax) on the hacksaw blade.
So do you push the boom in each time you put it on the rack?
Thanks for the video. I am not a customer for a drone but am enjoying the technology as a viewer.
Why are setting a bad example by blowing through the STOP SIGNS??? To many cyclists have died from either cyclist disobeying STOP SIGNS or vehicle drivers.
A small traffic cone also works and has the benefit of not scratching your paint. And how did you get two chainrings on your Bafang?
Bro, that's an amazing idea with the traffic cone. The chainrings, just kind of fit. But this is a Tongshen TSDZ2 so it's probably different. I don't recall doing anything special for that. That being said, I now just use the singular ring. I was never using the smaller one so I just got rid of it and the shifter.
@@TheGiantTriker I can't claim the traffic cone idea. Got if from www.youtube.com/@TravelsByTrike
Am I remembering correctly, that you an electronic tech? If so could it be from an exposure to something that you are regularly using like board cleaners, solder, rosin, the magic smoke that is released during testing the board, or even etch compounds used to remove unwanted copper from copper clad boards during prototyping? From my limited exposure I have read some Doozies of MSDS that make DDT look safe! Do not get me wrong, I am not saying that PFAS is your problem but it or some other chem is likely making you sick! Example PFAS, or Polyfluoroalkyl substances are fire retardant, water proof, melt resistant, friction reducer, tackifier, surfactant, lube, fuel additive, grease remover, rosin remover, coolant, cleaner, static reducer, sealant and far more including over 12,000 formulations! PFAS is like a TSR application, it just stays there, except it pollutes soil, lakes, and more! PFAS is in almost everything but it can be toxic or lethal. It is in Fertilizers, it is in our chips, it is in nonstick pans, it may be in lip balm, it is in latex paint, it is in clothes Here is a link to last weeks CBC Marketplace episode: Title: Is your makeup harmful? I've been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, another form of an autoimmune disease, and I hear you about fatigue. I never really understood why I would just feel so drained at the end of the day. A good ride on my trike helps. I come back tired, but I also feel better. Watching your videos always inspires me to get out and ride more. Thanks for the great music too!

Great to see you back again! I've done the Little Miami Trail from Milford to Antioch (in segments) about (wow!) 20 years ago on a road bike ('76 Motobecane Super Mirage). Still my favorite trail and a bucket list item to do it on my trike. Looks like you've ditched the e-assist on your trike (or it's a different trike?). Comment?
Still using e-assist. :) It increases the fun factor tremendously!
Sorry to resurrect an old post, but I'm curious how the fenders affect the folding of the Dumont. No one seems to post anything about that. My Dumont is on order and I want fenders, but need to be able to fold.
I am able to fold the trike just fine. :) The fenders end up on the outside of the folded trike. Maybe I'll do a video about folding it and putting it into the back on my new Mini Countryman.
The music for this episode was excellent and totally appropriate for the subject.
Though not directly in the path of the eclipse, it was interesting where I live in San Diego in that it made the daylight a strange color. The light dappling through our trees on the ground showed the disk of the moon crossing in front of the sun. No pinhole cameras necessary.
The walk looks peaceful..
I really like the clean look after the removal. The non-matching purple on the bar end cap would bother me, so I'd be tempted to paint it black. Great video. Thanks for posting!
Love the 360 camera! I have one and it's my favorite!
It certainly doesn't sound like a smooth ride. Don't you miss single-track?
There's a lot of factors here. You're a lot closer to the ground in a trike, and there's just more... hardware, probably twice as much. So yeah it can get a bit rattly. My sidebags bounce quite a bit on bumps which causes a lot of noise too.
Oh man you're back!!!! Freakin Awesome man.. my trike buddies and I wondered where you been..
Yes indeed! :)
You should no matter what, take both on the ground videos and the drone videos because each and everyday mother nature changes and so do the wildlife.

You do not need a topic, just shoot some video and 5 min is enough to keep us watching, but we like more. Myself I bought a 2014 Catrike Expedition in August for $1300 CAD which was lightly used. I hope to get around $1000 for my 2010 ActionBent. The Expedition is a speedy rig as I have been clocked by the RCMP at E-Bike Cat 2 speeds (49km/h) without any motor installed (not on a grade of any kind!), man, I was so sarcastic to that poor cop who was sure that I had a motor. I am trying to decide if I want to transfer my balanced dual cable brake lever from my ActionBent to the Catrike? Thoughts? 2 more wants: (1) install a 2m/70cm antenna so I can be bicycle mobile (HAM), (2) install my Bike E windshield which will be mounted to the boom and one distant want, add a Assist drive of 250 to 500 watts with a safer EM3ev battery (or two)
I'm curious about the "dual cable brake lever". Is that a thingy that lets you pull one brake lever to engage both brakes? Would be useful when I have a camera in one hand. Not sure if that's something useful to you or not. The motor is definitely a nice upgrade for any trike. The extra weight hurts quite a bit. But sounds like you may not need that. :)
It has been a while. Good to see you again
I like the episodes, please keep it up. With a little imagination and creativity you will think of things to record. I know from your music production you have a creative mind.
Thanks, I'll see what I can come up with. Winter is coming, perfect time for some triking. :)
@@TheGiantTriker Here are a few ideas - trike insurance (many trikers may not realize they are uninsured), trike security (from theft), winter riding clothing, how to enjoy nature while riding, drone buying tips, tips on how and how not to fly a drone, how to prolong the life of your equipment...some or most of those may not resonate with you.
WOW! Happy to see you post again! Welcome back! Nice ride!
Almost unsubscribed a few days ago when I saw you hadn’t posted for a year, but I forgot.
Yeah I'm a bit forgetful myself. :)
Welcome back. Glad you are feeling better and healthy. Your short videos are fun to watch. Keep at it and stay well.
also I want fenders because I ride rail trails that are lite gravel and it flys all over my seat and arms
Couodn’t tell if you hit a series of rumbles or bumps. I had front fenders on Catrike Expedition about 10 years ago and had to remove them. They attached to the hub area, not where yours do. Mine would rattle and shift and rub on wheels making it necessary to stop and reposition the fenders. Terrible design. Yours attach to a different area and seem much more secure.
This would be a nice video if we could actually see the trike. Nice shots of your back though.
I have the same but the double decker model. It swayes from to side a little. Will this damage the hitch or the part of the rack that goes into the hitch.
I don't think it will, but if you're worried about the sway you can also get a "hitch tightener". It's a little metal plate that holds it in place better.
Personally, I take the "Mary Poppins" approach to this issue... Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down. If E-assist helps you to get motivated, makes your workout rides more enjoyable and encourages you to extend your workout, then it is a net plus.
TIghten the bolts!!! ;)
This is great to see. I am being diagnosed at the moment and it is tricky to accept the new limits. I like cycling but had not thought of this idea - the recumbent trike. Finding that swimming feels good too! Thanks for sharing
You need a DDU (Dog Deterrent Unit). A bottle of compressed air, like a Zounds Air Horn, with a Tee junction equipped with a spray bottle and remote nozzle with some noxious water based, preferably non-toxic mixture like Bitter Apple, out the nose and/or tail of your trike. Yes, you will want to hold your breath, and wear PPE, which will affect the enjoyment of your ride, but The Skunk Bomb will give most dogs pause, as well as any riding companions you may have, unless you did not want them in the first place. Remember: Skunk Bomb! The most effective DDU! EVEN WORKS ON BEARS AND COUGARS! Your results may vary...
Just bought these fenders for my Dumont. Love them. Can’t afford custom paint even though I also have candy purple.
Thanks for your video. We are wanting to ride some trails near Louisville. Have you any recommendations for that area?
The Parklands trail is amazing. Here's a map, and lots of other info. :) theparklands.org/find-an-activity/biking/
I have purple Dumont as well. Put on t-cycle mount last night. Was looking for a side bag. Yours looks good. To prevent tube rotation drill small hole and insert a shear pin. It will stop rotation but if you get into a crash the Lin will shear and save the tubes.
I just tightened the screws down some more and I rarely get "bag droop". :) That bag is the Ibera Bike Handlebar bag. It's been perfect for holding a camera or drone. I recently moved my tubes into it as well.
Rode your “trail” today, recognize the scenery now. Working our way towards Texas collecting a few more states along the way.
Awesome, I hope you enjoyed the ride! :)
Yep I know the feeling of fatigue. For several years I had this weird pain that would migrate around my body. Just moving was painful, so I'd try to sit as still as possible when it would happen. Sometimes my hands hurt so much I couldn't use my computer and even picking and using a TV remote was stressful. I kept going to the doctor and asking about this weird pain that would move around. The doctors kept prescribing physical therapy... and I'd feel better for a while after getting out and being active, but then the fatigue would set in and take me out for days at a time. During one particularly bad flare up, where I could barely move my arms or hands, I was finally diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. My Doctor said my "rheumatoid factor" was off the chart, so no wonder I was in pain. I wasn't even 50 years old yet at the time, and find out I've got a form autoimmune disease that is my body fighting itself. At least I had a diagnosis and there are now very effective treatments for it. Ever since I started taking the medications to deal with this, I've not had any more of the debilitating pain that migrates from place to place. The fatigue is still there, but it's no longer so troubling. I used to love to walk, hike, bike, etc, but I've also suffered a few other conditions as I've aged that preclude me from riding a bike or walking very far any more without suffering extreme pain and exhaustion. My doctors are still encouraging me to get more physical exercise. I have an indoor recumbent exercise trike, and I can comfortably use it, but it's super boring just watching TV or the wall while I pedal, so I'm getting a trike. Pandemic supply chain issues mean I won't see it for more than a month, but it's all bought and paid for at this point and I'm just waiting for the call telling me I can come pick it up. In the meantime, seeing you, and Patty, David and many other trike cyclists out riding and enjoying the experience will have to do. Thanks for taking the time to put out your videos. They ARE hopeful and inspiring.
Sorry to hear of your pain troubles. It certainly puts a damper of things. :( What type of trike are you getting?
@@TheGiantTriker A Greenspeed Magnum XL. It’s one of the few with a weight limit high enough to support me safely. Alas, supply chain issues have kept me waiting.
