Day 4: Narrowboat Relocation Adventure: Whilton to Cropredy Marina (Day 4)
Day 4 of my 3-day cruise to my new narrowboat mooring.
👉 Days one, two and three of my adventures can be found here - ua-cam.com/video/tJ5jz-js06k/v-deo.html
Join me on the fourth day of my three-day cruise to relocate my narrowboat from Whilton Marina on the Grand Union Canal to the Cropredy Marina on the Oxford Canal.
In this episode, I navigate the challenging Oxford Canal, traversing its notoriously narrow and shallow stretches and tackling tight bends and locks.
Highlights include:
- Passing through the mysterious Fenny Compton “Tunnel”
- Navigating tight corners and shallow waters
- Struggling (and succeeding!) to dock at the marina
This cruise was initially planned as a three-day journey covering 30 miles and 30 locks, but unexpected challenges turned it into a four-day adventure. Along the way, I reflect on what I’ve learned about handling tricky canal sections, and I welcome your tips and advice in the comments. Please, I need your help!

Welcome to Nick's Wanderings on UA-cam! What's all this about? Well, this is an experiment. I ran a travel blog called Nick's Wanderings on a self-hosted WordPress site for years. After the site was hacked for the umpteenth time, I moved it to Medium. Recently, I started moving the site back to nickswanderings.com, but this time, it is hosted on Ghost. Sometimes weeds mess up propellers and rudders
Nice videos, thank you.
Bow thrusters would be a help.
Such a nice, well kept boat, congrats! I remember seeing her online whilst casually browsing what's on sale even though I bought my narrowboat in September near London, also 57ft, also first boat and will be handling it solo. There is SO MUCH to learn! Best of luck!
Bridges on corners - welcome to boating. We usually encounter boats coming in the opposite direction. Don’t get me talking about wide beams thundering towards you. Aaagh! Top work though.
Great video! This time last year, as inexperienced boaters, my wife and I collected our narrowboat. The first locks on our maiden voyage were the Buckby flight. On lock 3 (No11), whilst I was in the lock waiting to be raised, my wife fell off the lock quadrant onto the towpath (3' drop) and, as a result, broke her leg! 8 hours later and two ambulance crews, two fire engine crews, an NHS manager, and a dose of morphine, she was finally taken to Northampton hospital. Next morning on the boat, I noticed my pot of tea was decidedly askew. Looked outside, and the boat was aground due to those leaking lock gates. Had to let a couple of lock loads of water in from next lock up to refloat the boat! Then, I had to single hand the rest of the voyage up to North Kilworth, having never operated a lock before! However, the sun was shining, the learning curve was near vertical, but had a great two days to the mooring. Buy a boat, they said..... One year on, leg healed and enjoying boating! 'What three words' for lock 11 on the Buckby - Smashes, Something, Clumped 😂
What engine is in your boat
Glad u made it to Cropedy, well done, its all a learning "curve" as they say..if u pardon the pun 😂. When u got handed a cup of drink..I thought hang on, supposed to be Solo..then realised it must have been the Lock Buddy..never realised you could Hire the services of one of those ! So what's next..or is that it till next year ? Also front facing camera would be good..which think your working on 👍
You are a braver man than me, keep up the good work
What a lovely boat! And so well kept and clean.
You did ok 👍
Yes Nick we have the big Blue lump under our floor on the back deck still only done about 150 or so hours on her very happy with the Canaline engine we did order the Beta engine but there was a very long waiting list for one due to the Covid Outbreak our engine has 42 hp which is plenty for the canals and some rivers... Steve & Sandra Lady Bella.
we have a reflex stove on our boat which is now 2yeaars old we had her built back in 2021 during the covid outbreak which delayed the work no end there fore she was not deliverd to us untill october 12th 2022 she was shipped over from the Czech Repulic but was built by Elton Moss Boats at middlewich they have a partner factory over there or something that way they take the work that they cannot do due to so many boat orders there is a hell of a lot to take in with these boats but I can tell you I find that my boat does not like doing tight turns at speed she handles a lot better at lower speeds tick over is a good setting I bet you have a few battle scareson your boat after your little trip scratches to the blacking that you just had done its hard to get used to seeing your pride and joy getting scratched but its a bit of a contact sport in boating life you need to get used to it things will happen have fun out there anything you may need to know just drop a line . Steve & Sandra onboard Lady Bella.
Nick, Are you aware of the Gongoozlers Co-efficient. Your ability to move the boat without any issues is inversely proportional to the number of gongoozlers watching! :)
No gear, no steer 😊. A little bit more water over the rudder will give you a better response. Your journey so far has been a pleasure to watch, and you are doing brilliantly 👏 😀
Sounds like Wilton Marina all they want is your money a handover is a word they don't understand
To take these sharp bends I found one way was to slow right down. This decreases the momentum in the ahead direction making it much easier to add momentum in a different direction.
When we rented a narrow boat for a week boat yard gave us a quick introduction to the boat. The main gist was Canal boating is a contact sport and we did well. We hit most things from Nanton on the Hill to Oxford and back.
I does sound like it could be lowered a bit, as long as it doesn’t stall when put into forward or reverse
Put a camera facing forward hard to help if we can’t see where your going we don’t need to see where your been 👍
A forward-facing camera is in the works. The first attempt resulted in nothing interesting (apart from the tunnel) and a flat battery. The problem was I couldn't control the camera from the stern. Attempt two proved that Bluetooth doesn't work over the distance. Attempt three is in the works. So, future videos (if I can get the camera to work) will have shots from the front.
Are you aware that a canal is U shaped so deeper in centre and more shallow at edges
Thanks for the comment. If you watch the next video I release, you will see that they are not always U shaped...
What did or do you do for a career? You seem very comfortable talking front of camera and have a talent of explaining.
Thanks for the comment. It's all in the editing. You wouldn't believe the number of outtakes. I was a university lecturer for 25 years. During that time, 100s (if not 1,000s) of hours of recordings were captured of my voice and lecture slides; I also made short whiteboard explainer videos for my students. However, when COVID came along, I had to step in front of the camera to record my lectures as I wanted the students to see me. I got used to it and found I enjoyed the process of filming and editing.
@ I did wonder if you were a teacher or something similar, my wife teaches English and maths to carers in care homes and the nhs, she enjoys the class room teaching, when she is doing a class at home via interweb it’s like she flips a switch once it becomes live.
When I hired a boat and went up the north Oxford after I got the hang that a Narrowboat turns in the middle I found it much easier.
Ah! So you have done the Oxford Canal. It is a bit of a challenge.
It sure can be a bit on the narrow side in places,
I wonder how many times your boat has traveled that part of the canals since it was built
I’ve wondered that. I have found some screw holes that I suspect once had brass canals travelled plaques.
Sorry but why do you spend the first couple of minutes showing what's coming up in the video, it makes it worthless to watch as you know what's going to happen
It’s my training. “Tell ‘em what you’re going to tell ‘em, tell ‘em, tell ‘em what you told them”. It’s also to save you time. You get a sneak peak that is coming up so you can bail if it’s not what you are looking for from the video.
@@Nicks-Wanderings Personal opinion, but I don't like it, it's an Americanism where the intellique level is lower, it devalues your content.
You done well for first time cruising, when you film your trip could you have camera facing the front so we can see what you are seeking rather than just a video of you talking? You can still talk and explain what’s happening.
Thanks for the comment. I did have a camera on the front for the tunnel. I was hoping to capture more footage from the front, but the plan failed (flat battery). I now have a new plan for operating a front camera, so fingers crossed it works (I think this will be plan C, and I have a plan D if plan C fails).
It will be more responsive with more speed.
Thanks.... I will give that go.
Thanks for this series Nick. You dont say anything about life onboard since your intro so either you are not staying or are not going to discuss living. As its getting colder, hope everything heat related is working for you.. Look forward to future adventures..
At the moment, I am not living on board; however, I do plan to. I was originally going to buy a boat in a couple of years, but this one came along, and it felt right for me, so I jumped on it. The first videos were about moving the boat and in the 20+ hours I was on the boat, I spent less than an hour inside. It was all about the moving.
Brilliant 👏
Thanks
Really smoothing the journey is...👍
Thanks
Nick did you have any handover from whilton Marina how to operate the boat start up and general workings of your boat heating system for instance engine start up procedure .??😲
Thanks for the comment. Yes, they did an excellent handover a couple of days later and in the video I wanted to do an 'unboxing' type things to capture my initial reactions.
please add a video to the front of you boat so we can see where you are going and what your talking about also my a drone so we can see yuor boat from above will be much more interesting

to steer you need water passing the rudder, power up !!
Thanks..... I will give that a go.
That is more like a waterfilled ditch than a canal but your boat in lovely.
Ah! You wait until you see the video I am working on. There is a short clip that may confirm your suspicions!
Can you get L plates for narrow boats? Hope all goes well and you have a long and happy ownership🤗
That's what a friend said.... They were horrified that there was no test. They also suggested L plates.
Good luck with your travels. It’s a different world full of ups & downs but the boating community is on the whole made up of fabulous friendly people who help out as you are now ‘family’. It’s a life I’ve been living for nearly 20yrs so I wish you lots of wonderful memories and have of course subscribed. Wishing you all the very best 🦆💕
Thanks for the comment. Much appreciated. Everyone I have met so far one the canals have been incredibly generous with their time and their help.
I have just found your vlogs and I think you have done amazingly well don’t be so hard on yourself x
Thanks!
An interesting video and thank you for sharing. I don't know what your speed was, but appeared to be "slow & steady". With hindsight, what could have been better for you (as you continue to "learn the ropes") ? Thankfully the engine appears in good order and your narrowboat with the boatsman cabin seems to be "cosy". Q: before you made this purchase, what kind of narrowboat were you looking for ? Thank you once again for sharing your video.
I had been looking at narrowboats for about four, maybe five, years. In that time I had looked at everything. I like technology, and I like history. At one point, I was going to for an all-electric boat - a tech approach. But they were far too expensive. Then, I decided to go in the direction of history and get a boat with an engine room. I signed up for all the marina mailing lists I could find, and spent far to much time on sites selling boats. I have looked at hundreds (1000s?) of boats. When I saw the Grey Wagtail, she ticked so many boxes, I decided I had to buy it.
@@Nicks-Wanderings Thank you for your reply
Hope you don't mind me giving you a tip but iv been constant cruising for a year now and my biggest tip is always get three more mooring pins than you need so you have spares and a spare mooring hammer as iv left a mooring on a really bad stressful day left my pins behind by mistake but because I had spares it wasn't the big issue it should have been
Thanks for the tip. That explains why I found so many mooring pins on board! I have at least four, if not five. I will get a spare hammer; that is a good tip.
@Nicks-Wanderings it's also best to have a spare windlass for the same reason and I always spring line when I more so I have two long mooring pins and twos short mooring pins and I keep the same again in spares and I do Moore on the center line but I leave it a bit slack so it can't go right and cause the boat to tilt etc
@Nicks-Wanderings also get a composite lump hammer if you can as the wooden ones do tend to snap or come loose
Even though it takes up room, I sure like a boat with a proper engine and engine room. Much more in style than pulling up some floor boards to get to the engine. And although the diesel fire stove is not as atmospheric, it sure is convenient. Just seeing all the sailboat people use it ... Enjoy your new boat!!
Thanks for the comment. I really like being able to stand there and see the engine. It makes the checks so easy and quick. I can be done in a couple of minutes and no boards to lift.
Hi Nick Enjoying watching ur Vlogs & ur New channel. Can I kindly ask , how much Narrowboating did you do before this & Buying Grey Wagtail. Did you have the Boat built to your specs or purchased secondhand. I think you said you are going to be a leisure Cruiser, not live aboard so very interested in how you plan to go about it, as being Retired myself & thinking of buying a Boat, after a few Hire Holidays, any insight is always welcomed. As a Leisure cruiser I often wonder regards moving from place to place & then mooring Boat in a new location / Marina & then I guess getting back to where started from & getting Car if for example have travelled some distance over a number of weeks. Colin.
Ah, this is an interesting question. I grew up in a town on the Thames, and as a kid, I was usually by it, in it or on it. I even had two summers working for a rowing boat hire company. As a kid, I canoed, rowed, sailed, and drove motorboats (I was 'trained' up to 27 ft). In my 20s, I almost rented a boat to live on in Oxford and came close to buying a narrowboat (I didn't have the money and couldn't get a loan). I then didn't go near a boat for 25 years. My interest in boats was reawakened during the first COVID lockdown. A couple of years ago, I took an RYA helmsman course (good course, bad student), and I had one short holiday on a narrowboat. These were all designed to 'get it out of my system' but failed. So, I have no real experience on narrowboats. The Grey Wagtail is second hand.
@Nicks-Wanderings Thanks Nick for the in depth reply, will be keeping a watch on your channel & vlogs👍
Oh it's going to be brilliant. A lovely warm and comfortable boat with plenty of storage. Let the adventures commence!
Exactly. I can't wait....
Thanks for the video Sir, could I ask whats a rough price for a boat of that size please, very nice indeed very clean.
The Grey Wagtail is 57 ft long, 6 ft 10 inches wide. She cost me 2/3 of an MP....

I thought it would be a bit like learning to drive a car, you need lessons and practice? and then when you pass the test your allowed to drive on the road on your own.
Thanks for the comment. There is no licence needed to drive a narrowboat. You just turn up and go. You can have lessons, and I did, and I clearly need more/
Absolutely loved the video, very impressed on how you took on the new challenge. That boat is LONG. Well shot, edited and narrated video, looking forward to the next one. Very relaxing and therapeutic, loved the scenery. Thanks for sharing!
My pleasure, and thanks for the comment.
Condensation means corrosion possibility !
Yes. A big problem with narrowboats.
I love the day cabin and the engine sounds beautiful, can we have a history of the boat sometime please, great video.
Thanks for the comment. The only history I have of the boat is that she was built in 2007, and I think I am the third owner. I will be making a video about the engine as I am trying to understand how a three-cylinder engine works as a four-stroke!
One of the great moments in life 1st buying your 1st boat the 2 nd when u eventually sell it ,😮
Thanks... hopefully the second great moment for me is a good few years off.
When passing an approaching boat, don't be tempted to slow down if you think you may collide. Collisions are rare as each boat is preceded by its own pressure wave which acts as a buffer.
Wow, thanks, that is a good point. I have experienced pressure waves when in the tunnel, and they are powerful. I could really feel them push the boat around.
Beautiful boat happy sailing 🎉
Thanks
