Dernier film américain pour la twenty century fox 1945. Ce film est loin d être mauvai comme l affirme certains nanars qui ne connaissent absolument rien sur l oeuvre cinématographique de mes idoles Stan et Ollie. Le gag de fin est surprenant mais dans des gags a basés de distorsion physique ils y en a notamment la bohemienne en dessus de zéro laurel et hardy au far West. Non les toreadors ont a encore un dédoublement et Stan et Stan toreador grand moment puis au début des clins d oeuils a leurs films antérieurs avec la fontaine et la reprise avec les oeufs de Hollywood revu enfin un film distrayant.

An entertaining picture of National Service conscripts' life in the 1950's. Newley, primarily an actor, turned pop-singer, turned star of musicals had actually done his National Service (quite a number of aspiring actors managed to avoid it which wasn't easy) and he performs well in this film. Even the American William Bendix with his passable 'Irish' accent does well, as does Lionel Jefferies who never disappointed. The are backed up by a long list of well-known character actors. Many National Service films were made- after all, it was something that was a rite of passage that nearly all British males of that era had to go through. Two other NS films of note are 'Carry on Sergeant' and 'These Dangerous Years' - the latter starring Frankie Vaughan, the well-known singer who was another ex-NS conscript.

I always viewed the end of this film as an attack on those persons who have dedicated their lives to helping the under privileged, By painting them all as hypocrites who would abandon all their principles in exchange for money and comfort. It's an excellent film, but acts as a distorted apologist piece for those industrial concerns that held their employees in virtual slavery and excused it by saying "We give them houses and schools". Look at the History of the industrial revolution and you see that the hovels they provided were not GIVEN to the workers, but rented to them at rates that were sometimes higher than the wages given, so every pay day after deductions the worker owed the company more than they earned, and this debt just kept building, AND if the worker died with money owing, the dept was passed on to their spouse and children, who were made to work it off, while building it even larger. It's very prettily done, but like many movies, it presents a very distorted and idealized vision of reality.
