Hi and welcome to my channel!
I'm a South African who finds himself in the astonishingly beautiful country of Ireland. Occasionally I will post some videos about life in the new country that I call home.
I make my living as a SAS / R programmer, but I have experience with a whole bunch of languages. In my spare time I make some videos about programming. I'm still new to monologuing, so go easy on me!

Kerry Cliffs - one of the most beautiful places in the world!
Title says it all! The video doesn't capture it properly, but the howling of the wind on top of those cliffs is just haunting. 🙂

We're taking a trip down memory lane with Halo: Combat Evolved; released in 2001 (ported to PC in 2003). One of my favourite games of all time, but it must be at least 15 years since I last did a playthrough. Yes, I am playing on Easy to focus on the storyline. In this episode, Captain Keyes tries to parallel park and fails miserably.
30 minutes of... Duke Nukem 1 Episode 2
Переглядів 187 місяців тому
Way more than 30 minutes due to, in my opinion at least, some really frustrating and repetitive level design. DN1 could easily be beaten in 30 minutes and had more interesting levels. The game is set in the year 1997. Dr. Proton is a madman, determined to take over the world with his army of Techbots. Duke Nukem, the eponymous hero, takes upon the task of stopping him. The first episode takes p...

The cartoon-style game features agent Halloween Harry, who has to save the world from aliens that want to take control of Earth by turning its population into green-skinned zombies. Some of the enemies reference Aliens, Gremlins, and Elvis Presley. Harry is helped by controller Diane, who gives him information via a video link. Alien Carnage, originally released as Halloween Harry, is a side-sc...

30 minutes of... Wacky Wheels

As a kid, I grew up with only PC gaming, no consoles; I played Wacky Wheels, not Mario Kart. As a result, the first time I saw Mario Kart, I thought, "wow, Nintendo shamelessly plagiarised Wacky Wheels!" - little did I know it was the other way around! Wacky Wheels is a kart racing video game released by Apogee Software for MS-DOS in 1994. The game strongly resembles Super Mario Kart from the S...

The greatest game of all-time. In this video I run through the first episode of DOOM in about 30 minutes on a non-challenging difficulty level. Doom is a first-person shooter game developed and published by id Software. Released on December 10, 1993, for DOS, it is the first installment in the Doom franchise. The player assumes the role of a space marine, popularly known as the Doomguy, fightin...

You're not wrong, but I recorded most of these in advance already, though!
Lekker Jan! Ek wil vir jou baie dankie sê vir die uitstekende video's. Dit help baie en wens ek kon hulle vroeër kry.
Groot plesier, bly dit help!
the farming part was the best
Thank you so much! It's a great video. Could I connect you via Linkedin, lol ?
After all these years this came up while i was scrolling
Makes you feel old, doesn't it 😅
@@janvanderlinde im actually 18 i found this game when i was like 11 or 12 yrs old found it on my dad’s old computer which had Windows xp
ah, I played it as a kid in the early 90s... 👀
This is one of the most useful series I have ever come across in UA-cam, thank you so much Jan.
Could you please do the SAS®9 Administration: Getting Started next time, you explain very well
Thank you so much Jan. I really do appreciate the effort and warm calmness. and clear explanations.
Thank you so much Jan, I am still here on the series, I honestly can't thank you enough.
I really love how you make everything easy. Your explanations makes me confident about this upcoming test.
I might not be able to comment on all the videos but, I want you to know that I am so grateful for your videos. I am actually righting a Base exam this month. Thank you so much for finding time to do this videos brother.
Wishing you all the best for the exam!
Thank you so much Sir.
You're very welcome!
Great work Jan, really appreciate it! Many thanks for your kind work and sharing all these videos ;)
Glad you found them useful!
@@janvanderlinde Definitely, I come from R and find SAS documentation really user unfriendly but your videos do the job 💪
So tired
Is Harry supposed to look like Tom Cruise in the intro cut-scene?
The love child of Tom Cruise and the Michelin Man.
I grew up on the shareware games. Commander, keen, Jill of the jungle, Duke, Nuke em,. I forgot about Halloween Harry, and now I want to play.
It was a golden era for games and I love reliving the memories!
Finally Completed... Thank you! !!! 😊for providing this Excellent series !
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow, is this taking me back! My siblings and I loved this game. I remember I didn't like playing that monster potion room when I was alone because our computer was in the basement and the music would creep me out lol.
This game was brilliant. My favourite thing to do was to get to the top of the tower and just change the seasons - the art was so well drawn. I love your anecdote about the potion room, the music was definitely creepy as a kid! You may also enjoy the Peter Pan video, it has a similar art style and released at more or less the same time.
Why the date9. informat not work on the following data ? DATA em; input date$10. ; cards; 12FEB2024 16JAN2024 ; RUN; DATA emp; SET em; new_date = input(date, date9.); FORMAT new_date date9.; RUN; date11. is working... DATA emp; SET em; new_date = input(date, date11.); FORMAT new_date date11.; RUN;
Take a look at the output generated by your first DATA step. You'll notice that your dates are cut off. Review how SAS interprets a CARDS statement and you'll figure out your issue pretty quickly!
@@janvanderlinde ohh , i got it. The specified length of 10 created a extra space in a date variable and date9 needs a length of 8 char . DATA em; input date $ ; cards; 12FEB2024 16JAN2024 ; RUN; it works now. Thanks 😍
@aks40025 no that's not quite right. You have extra spaces because you indented your text in the CARDS statement. Remove those leading spaces and it'll parse properly without needing to fiddle with the lengths.
Hi Jan, thanks for your interesting video lessons. I am already an intermediate SAS user but I happily watch your videos, as I come from a completely different field of study respect to computer science, therefore I find always useful to get a recap of some basic concepts and I always learn new functions or options that I have never heard about. I am looking forward to going through all your lessons ;) I have one suggestion for this video, although I am sure that you already know this feature: if using the keywords ERROR-, WARNING-, NOTE-, INFO- followed by a dash (as I wrote them) in the very same way as you did in your video, then you do get the text that follows that specific keyword highlighted in the corresponding colour (red, green, blue, white, respectively) but without the specified keyword (i.e., without "ERROR:", "WARNING:", "NOTE:"). In Enterprise Guide, the log doesn't then list these messages as error, warning or notes, although a corresponding error or warning symbol appear in the program tab (so I am not sure how "acceptable" it is in a professional environment). In any case, I have been using it constantly in my programs to highlight messages and I find it pretty useful for debugging, creating headers or simply highlight values. Best! ;) Neri
Hi Neri! Glad you're enjoying the videos. I actually did not know about that feature, so thanks for sharing, I'm sure it'll help others too!
Thanks guys! Ian should thank you too.🙂 I was just listening to the “In Our Time” podcasts about megaliths and this mostrosity was brought up. So I’m very grateful for your video! Cheers! Scott in Washington state US
Hi Scott! Your comment got caught by the moderation filter for some bizarre reason... Anyway, glad you enjoyed the video ; there's another dolmen somewhere on my channel. If you enjoy them you should visit Ireland 🇮🇪, they're everywhere!
u have the Full Version?
Only the shareware version, but I think you can still buy the original from CarrSoft!
Hi Jan. Thank you for the videos, they are a lot of help. Just one question regarding the last bit of the exercise. We should only give a bonus to employees on a monthly pay frequency. Would the statement not maybe be something like : if payfreq="MONTHLY" and month(nxt_pay)=month(dob) then bonus="Y" ?
Hi Ryno, you're very welcome and yes you're 100% correct. I neglected to add the restriction that it should apply only to employees on the monthly salary plan; well spotted!
Hi Jan. I want to thank you again for the videos, they were a great help. I wrote my SAS Base exam this moring, and passed rather well.@@janvanderlinde
That's fantastic news, congrats Ryno!
great tutorial, one of proc sql would be interesting
Thanks! I'm planning on running through PROC SQL at some point in the future, just need to find the time!
My god we really played the same stuff ! :D
It was a golden era!
Top game dit!

This is factual.👍
Super fun to see! I really like the old steam engines, and of course the Mustang.
It was a fun time and I can heartily recommend it.
I forgot how low the framerate on Cosmo was!
Yeah, this game did not age well. It was not as much fun to play as I remembered, the controls were laggy too.
@@janvanderlinde I remember having the same experience a few years ago, not having as much fun as way back. Some of the games aged much better than others.
Hi the way of your explanation is fantastic...Please make more videos on BASE SAS and Advance SAS
Glad you found it useful!

Glad it was helpful!
thank you so much this is so useful

😂😂🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰😝😝
It's crazy how difficult this one was!
Yeah, it requires much more precision on timing than the first one. Almost like the first one gave you more freedom to find your way to the end.
Wow that soft lock at the end was a shame
Yeah i was hoping to speedrun the game in 30 mins! I could have done it too!

Posh new thumbnails!
Only the poshest on this channel.
How to get numeric and character variables missings in a dataset usually proc means data =inputdataset nmiss; Run; this mehod only numeric missing variables i want to get character var missings also
You'd use a PROC FREQ for this as PROC MEANS is for numeric data. FREQ will count the missings as a separate line.
Super teaching
Woo! Complete at last! Congratulations on the series!
It's been 84 years....!
@@janvanderlinde So, what's coming up in the next 84 years?
Thinking of starting a new channel where I just mindlessly comment on random stuff and hotbox a recording studio. I hear it's quite profitable.
Thank you so much for video
You are very welcome!
!CORRECTION! at 01:17:20 - here I misspoke, so just to be clear... The creation of the VALUE column does not depend on the OUTPUT statement, but instead it is immediately initialised as missing when the PDV starts working with the DATA step. Whether or not the numeric value is written out is dependent on the placement of your OUTPUT statement, but the column will always be initialised by the PDV.
👍
Cool idea
