HOW TO BALANCE MnO4- + Br- = MnO2 + BrO3- by Oxidation Number Method
HOW TO BALANCE MnO4- + Br- = MnO2 + BrO3- by Oxidation Number Method
Step 1
Assign oxidation number for all the atoms in the given equation.
Step 2
Identify the increase and decrease in oxidation number
Step 3
Multiply using the results of Step 2 on the right hand side and balance the left hand side.
Step 4
Check the charges and add H+ on the appropriate side based on the charges.
Step 5
Add H2O on the appropriate side to balance the H - atoms.
Now all the atoms on the LHS and the RHS will be equal. The charges too will be equal on both the sides.

Sir, why was the hydroxide radical not considered like the nitrate radical?
The hydroxide (OH) radical is not present on both the sides of the Chemical Equation. It's present at the reactant side (LHS) only. Hence it's not considered like the nitrate (NO3) radical. Therefore the hydroxide - OH was split as O & H while listing the atoms on the LHS & the RHS.
