This channel has some personal videos I made about my HO scale train hobby. If something hasn't been covered before or in enough detail in another video, I will sometimes add my own video of it here, and hopefully it will help someone else in the hobby.
Christmas 2024
I set up a circular track and ran my Bachmann Irish Railway around my Christmas village.

Coyote Pass and Northern Railroad
Переглядів 23414 годин тому
One of the members of the PSR NMRA had a layout tour of his Coyote Pass and Northern Railroad. This models a fictitional railray in the southwestern states, mostly Arizona, through many colorful towns and scenic countryside. There is a lot of detail and lots of great craftsmanship. I took some videos and many photographs of the layout to get ideas on for my own scenery, structures, weathering o...
A Comparison of SDXH166D Diesel Horn Sounds
Переглядів 76Рік тому
This compares the eight diesel horn sounds loaded on the SDXH166D Digitrax SoundFX decoder. The sounds are all pretty good, and there's a good variety. I wanted to hear all the horn sounds so I could get a good match for my loco, a Surfliner F59PHI. I also have an EMD F40PH, so hopefully it will go in one or the other.
Adding People to my Walthers Amtrak Surfliner Passenger Car

My HO scale Walthers Surfliner car needed some people, so today I added some in. Here's a bit of what I did, and stay to the very end to see a comparison with an actual Surfliner train.
My First Layout Using Woodland Scenic Mountain Valley Scenery Kit

Here's my first train layout I did back in 2005 using Woodland Scenic's Mountain Valley Scenery Kit. I learned a lot by using that kit and it gave very good results.

Bachmann vs TCS Decoder

This is a comparison of the Bachmann decoder and the TCS decoder. Both fit in my Athearn DCC Quick-Plug Equipped locomotive, so I thought I'd compare the two.
The Stocking Valley Ry.
Переглядів 5229 років тому
I made this video for Alan, my nephew, who loves trains. I wanted to show him my train layout I built. It is from a book "Basic Model Railroad Track Plans" and is called the Stocking Valley Ry. The plan called for 18" radius turns, but I used 22" radius turns because I didn't have many 18" ones but had a lot of 22" curves. So this has Bachmann HO track with curves of radius 22" or greater and D...

This is a little 4x8 track in Reed's Hobby Shop in La Mesa. The train just goes round and round. It's kind of peaceful.
Comparison of Walthers, Bachmann, and Atlas Train Cars
Переглядів 21 тис.10 років тому
This compares three HO scale train cars I bought on the internet. They were all $10 - $12, discounted price, and the cheapest I could find. I want to get a stock of cars for my train and want them to uncouple on the magnetic decouplers, so I tested for that.
Feb 10, 2013, World's Greatest Hobby on Tour, in Del Mar, CA
Переглядів 6010 років тому
I went to this train show in Del Mar, CA, and took videos of many of the train layouts to help inspire me with ideas on what to do with making a layout. Thought I'd share the video in case others were interested too.
Looking good.
How much track should I buy for this kit ?
Depends on what you want to make. The instructions give you a list for a simple track plan with one passing siding, like in the picture, but for my track plan, it's slightly more. I just made mine up and used flex track for much of it.
you still around?
you guys still open?
I think they're still open.
The cv117 to control ditch light oscillation timing is still to fast at the lowest cv setting “cv 1 “.
The cv117 to control ditch light oscillation timing is still to fast at the lowest cv setting “cv 1 “.
Nice job! Is this the original track plan cause the box makes it appear only one track not two .
The box shows one track going around with a passing siding, but the instructions state you can adjust to any track plan you have in mind. The tunnel is not fixed with any opening or anything. You can design your own mountain with your own tunnel as it is made from scratch. So it's very flexible to your own ideas of how you want to do things.
Are there some walthers trains that are not marked underneath?
Nice cars that maybe good but, ill go all the way 100% with kadee couplers and metal wheelsets
It would've been great to have included Athearn within your review! So my question is where would Athearn train cars rank among the three you talked about in the video?
For Athearn, all I have are some passenger cars, including the San Diego Coaster cars, but not much else. I can only compare them with my Walthers Proto Amtrak Surfliner (lighted) cars and would say the Coaster cars rank the same. Both the Surfliner and Coaster cars are incredibly detailed, but I like the Walthers knuckers better because they have the spring like a Kadee.
On further thought, it might have been easier to clip the blue, green, and violet wires about midway down the connector to the board. Then just wire-wrap the connections there, and then solder the wires back up. It was kind of hard to solder to the board since there was no good spot to solder to, like a metal tab or something, and clipping the connecting wires might be easier.
Did you wire one pair of the warm white ditch lights to the green wire and the other to the purple?
Yes, that's correct. Purple for one light, and green for the other light. Plus each light had a common wire connected to the blue.
@@MrBobsTrains ok so another wire running from each to the blue wire as well?
@@ontariorail1251 Yes.
I liked the video and will go ahead purchasing a kit. Question: Is the tunnel plans designed for one or two tracks? If one how did you change the plans?
Great video! I'm going to get this kit and build an HO layout. This video really helped me see what it looks like.
Thanks. It was a good kit. I hope it turns out well for you.
Nice I am also buying one form Amazon
bachmann has exploded parts
The reason why Bachmann couplers sit lower is not the coupler. Its the trucks. All bachmman wheels are 33-inch or 28-inch. Atlas wheels are all 33-inch or 36-inch. Walthers varies from 33 to 36. Also, I notice that you bought all of the low, entry level rolling stock (trainman, silver series, and trainline). All three are not the best in quality anyway.
Gotta go with mainline or proto for walthers and master with atlas. Bachman is garbage.
Thanks for that.
Great video! Did you use plywood or foam for the base? Great layout. Wanting to build one myself. I thought about getting this kit.
Thanks! It was fun to build and looked good when done. I had a heavy piece of particle board for the base, but wouldn't recommend it. A better one would be a base with 1x2 boards forming a frame under a 1/4 inch sheet of plywood.
All three are cheap to me because I've had trouble with all three. I'm moving to better brands at this point.
From my experience, I would not risk any money on ANY of Atlas' products. They are not the company they used to be.
Have you tried the Athearn brand of products?
Nice demo. On Atlas I'd change over to Kadee 5 or medium set couplers, Bachmann medium underset, Walthers passes but either Kadee 5 or the 140 series whisker couplers. Good video.
Thanks. Good to know. Wish the couplers were all the standard height out of the box, but guess you have to remedy that yourself. Will try out your suggestion.
Should have got the whole install kit with the TCs board no resisters needed plus you get keep alive
Thanks for the suggestion. The TCS A4X and A6X boards look great. I may try it on my next project.
Yeah I hate how the bachnann HO scale couplers don't have the springs so they constantly always fall apart and they're just complete s***
Based on my own personal experience (n scale) I will not purchase anymore Bachmann, ever.
Exactly the same here. Bachmann has always been among the worst.
The part that plays the part of the Air hose take a needle nose Bring it up a Hair not too much some of those couplers May have to shim a hair to match up. Ya da.problem solved.
i’d like to use this plan. what radius are the curves?
18". In process of building with my 14 yr old daughter! You can customize a lot but may have to order more plaster (it's cheap don't worry)
Ken Rubin thank you! for both inner and outer loops?
@@trainimator The outer loop was done using flextrack, I believe. It is a larger radius than the inner track, and spaced far enough apart so that two trains with passenger cars can pass each other.
Surprise? You need to tune new rolling stock?
This being your first layout , how hard did you find it building it from the ground up with the supplied kit ? I’m a beginner and wanna do a with my 5 yr old ! Nice setup !!
Thanks. It was easy to do and the instructions were clear and geared for beginners. Good luck!
Very nice I used the same kit for my first layout and now I have a big basement with a decent sized layout. The kit taught me a lot on how to model scenery
are the cars that tou used hot wheels size because im going to buy on but i dont really big is the Valley Mountain kit model
I used HO scale cars and trains. The cars are smaller than Hot Wheels, probably half the size. Walmart used to sell this size of cars, but now they don't, and they used to be like 3 or 4 dollars each. Too bad, but I don't see that size of car anymore except online, and they are too expensive.
BobsTrains oh ok, thanks last question, how much did you spend on the hole thing to make the city????
@@austingomez9630 I forget. It was so long ago. But now what I would do is to go to the railroader swap meets, if you can find them, and buy them used. I've done that lately and got some nice buildings for 20-30 dollars each. And nice train cars for $5 each.
The large reverse light is actually a emergency light. The small reverse light is the only actual reverse light. The emergency light should strobe if there is an emegency. If there arent enough functions, the way you have it is fine.
Thanks for the info!
Thank you for the comparison video, it will aid a lot of us.
@bodosun not everyone has a bottomless pocketbook, nor wants to spend a considerable amount of coin for a starting layout. You can buy top of the line, good for you, go and do it. Do not belittle those who cannot or do not want to.
Can the ditch lights strobe without soldering?
Not with this board, unfortunately.
In regards to the Atlas hopper car: No spare parts, the two “bars” should go inside the hopper car. On the prototype car the “bars” tie the two sides of the car together so the load, coal in this case, does not push out the sides and destroy the car. www.flickr.com/photos/mikedanneman/8319006432/in/photolist-dF7LUm-dF85Mo-VREQnb-X4YAQh-7LuYNp-8NjwLS-q7dYfg-qLsrHL Interesting photo: The rare BN Trough Train; 278 foot, 13-unit articulated cars. 23 cars (BN 552000-552022) were built and could haul the equivalent of 146 standard coal hoppers. 6,394 foot length for the Trough Train vs 8,030 foot length for standard cars. Take note that each “unit” has “X” bracing in the center, side-to-side. Due to the very destructive nature of coal dust in the sliding plates (between each unit), and the fact that one B-unit’s aluminum center sill snapped, the cars have been scraped.
can i be use for N scale model train ?
Yes, you can. You need to supply the track. This is only the scenery, but I think it will look fine in n scale.
Yes, it works perfect for N or HO.
My Athearn P59 is an old blue box. Lots of work to do on it.
Yeah, it's not easy to wire those ditch lights in. But it can be done. Good luck!
I fail to understand why you spend so much time to review absolutely low-end models! I got to your page through an automatic link - otherwise I would not even have considered to watch this!
I didn't know what to expect buying these "cheap" products, but I was happy with them and think they are good for getting started with, better than some of the other stuff I've seen. I have some Walthers Proto cars which are much more expensive, but thought that maybe some people might be interested in how these low-end cars compared.
I appreciate the review... so hard to find a stock car comparison video.
Bob did you notice the walthers flat car you can not remove the trucks as you can on the Atlas and Backman
It looks like the Atlas and Bachman have screws, which are nice, to attach the trucks, and the Walthers just was pushed on over the plastic pin. Those are hard to take off without damage. You can take them off, but usually something gets scratched or bent in the process. The screws are better.
I converted my Walthers "plastic pin" with a metal screw. How? just build up the hole with some epoxy or other glue that hardens like CA. then just dremel a new screw hole and screw away... LOL 🤣
