Part 3. The old GDR Longneck Banjo is playing again. But who is the original maker?
After a rather complex restoration, the old longneck banjo plays again.
Both pot and neck have been straightened and it has got new frets.
I have chosen to keep the non-geared fifth string tuning peg.
The point was to avoid updates but to leave the longneck banjo as close the original construction.

This old banjo, presumably from GDR, does not play in tune anymore. The neck has a negative kind of curvature and the pot is out of shape.

This Mora Harp is made out of old spruce wood from country side furniture. I once saw a lovely old Mora harp in a display case at the museum Zorn. I took a few photos and in 2017 I tried to build the instrument. Anders Zorn is a famous Swedish painter. He lived in the town of Mora in Dalerne from 1860-1920. He had a big heart for local folk music and organized competitions for fiddlers. The Mor...

Tonewood comparison oak vs walnut for clawhammer banjos

Both banjos has a 11" blockrim and brass tonering. Same scale and build on the same way. I find that walnut and oak are great tonewood. The walnut banjo has a slightly more beautiful tone and walnut is more sophisticated than oak. The oak banjo is quite a bit more powerfull. I find that oak is fantastic as tonewood. An oak banjo is a workhorse. Its very strong and it keeps in tune for a long ti...

Beautiful work! I always wanted to learn to play the banjo. At nearly 70, I'm too old and my hands too arthritic now. I'm looking forward to a follow up video. That oak will be beautiful too, I'm sure.

Not bad. It takes a little fire-in-the-belly to do that. My Dad had that fire. He saw a picture in a boat magazine. He drove home to get the money for it. He took measurements from the picture and built a half model, which he used to go full sized.

All the banjo that’s needed for OT playing. I remember back in the sixties most of the old timers played on cheap banjos just like this. Ever once in a while you’d see someone playing OT on a resonator banjo possibly even a mastertone.

    • @oarnbak

The fret in front of the nut is what you call a zerofret. About the light wood: It wood from a parketfloor. I glue 3 peaces of wood together. 😀
