Jeep TJ Dash Removal/Reinstall Cliff Notes Style Part 2
Here I discuss how I removed the dash, swapped out the airbox, and reinstalled the dashboard in my Jeep TJ as part of my project to retrofit A/C into this old Jeep. Retrofitting A/C requires either modification to the airbox, or replacement of the airbox with an A/C version. I chose to purchase a used A/C airbox and swap out my non A/C airbox with one that is factory ready for A/C. In order to swap the airbox, the dashboard must be removed.
In this video I discuss the issues I encountered. I did not video the physical activity of pulling the dash out or swapping out the airbox and reinstalling.
I am not a professional mechanic. I am a DIY guy working on my own Jeep TJ. Anything you chose to duplicate that you see here, you do so AT YOUR OWN RISK. I am not responsible for damage or injury.

After 24 months, here is my 2nd round of replacing the battery for this watch. My first video on this (which I will take down soon) got a lot of criticism because I didn't remove the strap, and for other things. Here I remove the strap, which was ridiculously easy, and bring you along as I replace the CR2016 Battery, and reset the watch time to the WWV time radio station in Colorado. For this v...

The video shows the difficulty of transferring the springs to the new shocks. It's best to purchase the shocks with the springs already installed. You'll be glad you did, and so will I.

Thanks for the vid. Just to add, as some may wonder. If the battery goes flat and the dials for the chrono are not zeroed out, then these can be adjusted by: - 0.0/0.00 can be done by pulling the crown to position 1 (same as date/day adjustment) and pressing B button (top, right-hand one). It can be single pressed for micro changes or continously to move it around quicker. - 0.000 can be adjusted by pulling the crown to position 2 (hour/minute adjustment) and pressing button C (bottom, right-hand side). Same applies as per above in terms of moving the dial. - the seconds dial if not aligned to 12, it can be adjusted by pressing button A (bottom, left-hand side) for 3+ seconds, when the crown is fully pulled (position 2). Hope this helps a bit with the full self-service 🙂 Cheers!
I appreciate the video. I have this same oil leak on my "NEW" Ariens mower and am thinking of fixing it myself to keep from having to take it in for a warranty repair. Thank you.
@@userunknown2682 If the mover is under warranty I’d suffer the inconvenience of taking it to an authorized shop and having that casting replaced on their dime. They DESERVE to pay for that.
Sure worked on my 01 TJ. Many thanks!!!
Waaaaayyyyyy to long with so much unnecessary info
God this looks like a severe pita. I might as well throw this crap in the junk pile
Unfortunately, I can’t assure you the fix isn’t a pain in the butt. All I can offer is the repair, while not my best effort, is holding up.
@@mikehartmann5187 40$ for a heated solder sucker. My shaking hands may limit
Thanks for the video. I've used this a couple times over the past 6 years. Note: the watch will work if one loses the screw and cannot put the plate back on. Mine has been working fine for two or three years until I had to change the battery.
Are you on any medication, or perhaps alcohol ?
I think setting to manual focus and focusing the lense on the correct focal length is the way too go going forward. Other than that, great vid.
Thank you for that - I haven’t published videos in a while as I have been busy with life, but I haven’t given up on videos, just temporarily set this aside. I will keep your camera advice in mind. Cheers!
So what is the time loss or gain over the last 12 months.
Great question. I forgot that’s been (more than) a year since I set the watch. I haven’t touched it even to change for DST. The time variance since March of 2023 is….13 seconds. The watch is 13 seconds fast from the WWV atomic clock time. I was expecting it to be a couple minutes off. Not too shabby.
Damn, that is not bad at all, that’s great to know. Not that I miss 13 seconds over 12 months but still.
Steering wheel does not have to be removed to remove the dash just have to find the right position
Perhaps you could explain further - on my TJ, the dash sheet metal is both above and below the steering wheel. How do you remove the dash without removing the steering wheel?
Dude wtff you talk way to much guy.
I have the 140th Anniversary Bulova Precisionist and granted it's not the nicest nor is it the most expensive watch, but I'd be pissed if someone touched my Bulova with that watch tool kit. 1st off, you should've removed the band prior to removing the case cover. Also, if I'm not mistaking, you're supposed to pull the crown all the way out to stop the movement prior to changing the battery. You should never use a pair of stainless tweezers to assist a battery change. You should always use plastic tweezers when working with batteries. If you're gonna try working on your own watches invest in the right tools and quality tools. They don't have to be top of the line Bergeon tools, but they gotta be better quality than that $2 Amazon garbage. Also, if you don't know what you're doing 100% then don't touch it. Just because you see writing on a movement saying push doesn't mean you just push it. All that does is release the winding/setting stem so it can be removed. It has nothing to do with resetting the watch/movement. Watch some other videos before diving into a watch or just pay someone who knows what they're doing to change your batteries especially since you may have to reset the chrono hands once new battery is installed. I pretty much taught myself how to service all my automatics (ETA 2824, Sellita SW200 which is basically the same as the ETA 2824, and Seiko NH35 movements are the 3 I can service now) just by watching UA-cam videos. It's not hard to learn, but be ready to invest a pretty penny in tools, lubes, and whatnot. In the end it'll save you money if you're patient enough to learn the proper procedure's.
I had no problem with the bright and dim bulbs
There is a big mental brace in the way on drivers side
Thank you for the video
By reflection
How do you check to make sure the lights work?
Start the car, put your foot on the brake, put it in drive, and have a friend/family member/neighbor/well trained pet confirm the running light turned on. Absent all of those, think of a business parking lot like a strip mall where you can pull up to the store front and observe your car’s reflection in the store front glass.
I just spray the bolts with WD-40
Gloves keep the fingerprints off the bulb
Need to take off all the top bolts off the grill
Yes there's no need to loosen that bolt in the wheel well.
On the 2011 ltz.there are 2 metal bars running vertically behind where you can't get your fingers in to take bulb out
You have take the whole side front panel to get to both of them
Probably be best to wear latex gloves to
I found out from a reflection of a vehicle ahead of me at a stoplight
I have a question I have an 06 TJ Rubicon Unlimited that recently was attacked by some one that was trying to steal or hates Jeeps I hadn’t used it since last summer so I went to get it out no start no worries put on charge full charge no start. So I saw a wire in a red sheath hanging down on the left side of the column I reached in to see if it got disconnected. It was cut and I looked closer and found the other half. After removing the seat I found eight wires cut. Everything works but no crank/start my question to you is I need to get pictures of the area and connectors because the cut off what the connectors my name is Tim Hill ill be happy to talk to you as you have been pretty deep in your Jeep. You did a good job showing what you were doing. Thanks in advance Tim
Sounds to me like someone attempted to steal the car by hot-wiring it. You will need to splice the cut wires back together. Match wires by color and use a crimp connector or some other type to splice the wires back together. I would disconnect the battery while you work on the wires.
I’m glad this solved your problem!

A miracle find! 2001 TJ Sahara did so much troubleshooting, replaced impossible to find clock spring, nothing worked, next step I was taking was replacing the airbag controller. BUT I came across this video, tested my lamp and it was bad. I thought no way the system throws an airbag fault for a burnt lamp! As suggested by another I used Sylvania 2721 12v 1.2w bulbs from auto part store and Walla FIXED!!!!!! Thanks so much!!!😅
Now you have to show the drivers side. That is completely different.
Thank you, Mike. Did this exactly step by step and it fixed my airbag warning light as well. Thanks!
So did you check if the bulb worked before you took it out? You never said you did.
No. I didn’t check for an open before I removed the bulb. I did perform a basic check out of the clock spring and, it checked out ok. So, I figured it was either a blown indicator bulb, or a wiring issue. Either way I regarded it as a win to replace the bulb with a new one since that bulb is somewhat notorious for burning out.
Just take the air filter box out and you can reach the bulb without having to go from underneath. Its wayyyyyy easier. Theres a video on here that shows you how to do it. Simply dissconnect the hose from the air filter box, pull the box up and it comes right out. Then you can easily reach the bulb.😊
What about the drivers side?
Thank you so much
Not very helpful at all, not very knowledgeable of what he actually did, lots of guessing
That recessed, unknown "push" is the crown/stem removal button. Holding it pressed and pulling the crown out will allow you to remove the stem. This is only necessary if you need to remove the whole movement from the case.
When resetting the hand position, a short press on the pushers will move the corresponding hand a tiny bit. Pressing and holding the pusher for 3+ seconds, and keeping it pressed, will allow the coordinating hands to move continuously. The little 1/10 & 1/100 hand should both be aligned to 12 o'clock. The retrograde 1/1000 hand should be aligned to ".000" tick mark on the left.
When using a case back tool, it is often a good idea to use a clear plastic bag (like a Ziplock, or similar) between the watch and the tool. That way, if you slip, it won't leave a nasty scratch on the case back.
Great tip! Thanks
Work pretty good air bag light off in the dash now 2001 jeep tj thanks buddy
This mod is a BAD IDEA b/c it injects a ground into your unit under test and enables ground loops in your test setups. Grounds need to meet at a single point in your test setup - not at random places. Also remember to float your oscilloscopes or you will not be able measure voltage drops accurately on your grounding busses or your power distribution strips.
It's nice to know I'm not the only one who doesn't have room for everything😀
Thanks for this old man🤝

You may want to check your outlets. Typically it’s the narrow tab that’s the hot side while the wide tab is neutral.
I will do that thanks
Thanks for the video! Happy to give help if you go the v8 route. I’ll say…my v8 swap almost seems easier than this freakin air box swap. I have a leaky heater core and so far I don’t have the stomach to deal with it, thus far I’ve just bypassed the core to stop the leak.
Which V8 did you use for the swap?
5.3 LM7 from a 2004 Suburban with the stock 4l60e that I beefed up a bit, used the stock jeep tcase and I have the d30 up front and d35 in rear without lockers, it's held up the additional HP just fine. I posted step by step videos on my channel but not quite as detailed as your videos. @@mikehartmann5187

This fix worked perfectly for me today. Thank you!
Will it start if the air bag light is on?
Yes
@@mikehartmann5187 thank you, I am having the same issue in my 04 wrangler unlimited, but mine isn't starting. I had to bypass and send starter signal through a button. I thought it was because I damaged a plug for the driver side airbag, but apparently it is something else as well. Thanks anyway.
