I guess another point about his play is that it's cute when he does it as the sarveshvareshvara, but as the tatastha Shakti we are wanting to look towards his hladini Shakti to be instructed how to become a good play thing for that selfish son of Nanda Maharaj, and how to survive having a very intimate relationship with such someone with such an incredible capacity for personal exploitation. I guess that's one reason why as you said we focus on mahaprabhu and nityananda, we can interact with them and their associates without such heavy training and vesha, because they are just trying to help, especially nimai pandit who just sees himself as a low level teacher and part of the aspirant team, he's teaching the basics to kids and later doing kirtan, while we can't catch what is actually going on inside him, we can participate with him even if very unqualified

The observation of one of the participants about our usual goal-oriented way of thinking and how Krishna consciousness is far from that, is so nice. The other day I had that same feeling, thinking "wow, it seems like there's no goal to achieve, but rather that the path itself is the goal!!!". This changed my whole perception of devotional service. Everything became a goal/celebration in itself.... What a beautiful journey it is to go with you all through this book. Thank you ❤

hey, im not sure if its a tree going over the window, or if its the camera adjusting the brightness, i know that you need to keep it on auto, but you can possibly change the auto to focus on your face or to the right of the frame. I cant remember the setting but you can change wether or not the camera looks in the center of the frame, at faces, eyes, or a custom set point in the frame anyway, looks and sounds great! almost looks like a staged youtube show haha

I asked sadhu about the -am suffix, aparently its just the default suffix for sanskrit, so if you are being formal it is used if there is no other suffix due to grammar rules

It sounds like a commentary Srila Sridhar Maharaj made by applying Indian cultural references to Jesus's answer on one of the many times he was harrassed about his disciples' (or his own) breaking of the Law (usually Sabbath restrictions). As far as I know, simply being married doesn't exempt a woman from fasting in any of the Abrahamic traditions, although menstruation and pregnancy do in at least some cases. Also, many of the fasting traditions among Jews and Christians are individually undertaken spiritual disciplines, so a wife who would have difficulty doing her daily tasks while fasting would probably not take on such a fasting discipline. This passage in the Gospel of Mark gives three examples of such encounters: John's disciples and the Pharisees has a habit of fasting. Some people asked Jesus, "Why do John's disciples and the Pharisees' disciples fast, but yours don't?" Jesus said, "The wedding guests can't fast while the groom is with them, can they? As long as they have the groom with them, they cant fast. But the days will come when the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast. "No one sews a piece of new, unshrunk cloth on old clothes; otherwise, the patch tears away from it, the new from the old, and makes a worse tear. No one pours new wine into old leather wineskins, otherwise, the wine would burst the wineskins and the wine would be lost and the wineskins destroyed. But new wine is for new wineskins." Jesus went through the wheat fields on the Sabbath. As the disciples made their way, they were picking the heads of wheat. The Pharisees said to Jesus, "Look! Why are they breaking Sabbath law?" He said to them, "Haven't you ever read what David did when he was in need, when he and those with him were hungry? During the time when Abiathar was high priest, David went into God's house and ate the bread of the presence, which only the priests were allowed to eat. He also gave bread to those who were with him." Then he said, "The Sabbath was created for humans; humans weren't created for the Sabbath. This is why the Human One is Lord even over the Sabbath." Jesus returned to the synagogue. A man with a withered hand was there. Wanting to bring charges against Jesus, they were watching Jesus closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath. He said to the man with the withered hand, "Step up where people can see you." Then he said to them, "Is it legal on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?" But they said nothing. Looking around at them with anger, deeply grieved at their unyielding hearts, he said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." So he did, and his hand was made healthy. At that, the Pharisees got together with the supporters of Herod to plan how to destroy Jesus. (Mark 2:18-3:6 CEB)

Just realized it might help to say that I think applying a Vedic tradition of fasting exemptions for married women to this statement of Jesus to make a spiritual point to those more familiar with the Vedic culture is a prime example of putting new wine into a new wineskin, where the concept is the wine and the cultural context is the wineskin. Jesus would certainly approve of that use, which Srila Sridhar Maharaj undoubtedly knew.

This conversation of detatching and maintaining affection reminds me of the story of Abraham and his son (Isaac according to the Hebrew scriptures/Christian Old Testament, I think Muslims specify that this story occurs regarding Ishmael before Isaac's birth). Abraham has been called to follow God out of his homeland, and God has promised to make a great nation of Abraham's family, despite the fact that his wife is already past childbearing age and he is already fairly old. (Presumably, Abraham loves Sarah very much, because he doesn't take another wife until after her death, which would have been precisely what another man in that position in that society would have done). So when Abraham finally has a son (an only son if Ishmael, and only recognized son and son of post-menopausal Sarah if Isaac), God commands Abraham to sacrifice the boy to him. (Sacrifice of children seems not to have been uncommon in that time and place, depending on which gods one worshiped). So Abraham and his son set out walking to the mountain God has selected for the sacrifice to take place, presumably gathering firewood along the way. They reach the appointed place, and begin to pile stones to build an altar. At some point, Isaac asks, "where is the sheep for the sacrifice?" Abraham replies, "God will provide." The question and answer are repeated. Finally, Abraham ties his son, places him on the altar, and raises the knife to slit his son's neck. And the Lord stops his hand, sending an angel to prevent the atrocity. The angel directs Abraham's attention to a thorny thicket nearby, in which a sheep has become entangled. God orders Abraham to untie his son and sacrifice the sheep instead, and states that Abraham and his descendents must never kill their children in service of ANY god. Then God says, "since you trusted in me, and didn't withold from me even your only son, whom you love, I will indeed bless you and make of you a great nation." One reading of this story is as follows: Absolute Authority demands absolute obedience, but Infinite Love doesn't ask us to endure this existence full of pain and uncertainty alone or without affection. Ties of family, friendship, and community are actually necessary to support us in the disciplines which lead to spiritual growth. But we must be willing to relinquish any of those ties to God immediately and without condition. Our loved ones do not belong to us. They belong to God. God can do whatever God wants with them, as God can do whatever God wants with us. We have to understand this, and accept it with a willing heart. This may be part of the reason that many of us go through extreme phases in our faith journey, entertaining and sometimes acting on thoughts of cutting off previous ties. It is only when we have come to understand that neither we nor our loved ones belong to us that we can properly receive the gift of those ties of affection. If God is first for us, then God is willing to care for us by putting others around us for our support. If we are very fortunate, those others will also have put God first in their lives, and we can become gifts to each other on equal footing. The relationship is strongest and most beneficial which goes through the center and comes back out again, rather than running directly from the self to the other.

"When you were part of the servitor group, you didn't get a lot of head-pats." This reminded me of something I noticed last week when reading about the cleaning of the Gundica temple in Chaitanya Charitamrita (Madhya-lila chapter 12). I noticed this pairing of verses: When He saw someone doing nicely, the Lord praised him, but if He saw that someone was not working to His satisfaction, He immediately chastised that person, not bearing him any grudge. The Lord would say, “You have done well. Please teach this to others so that they may act in the same way.” (116-117) The first verse indicates praise and chastizement, but there is only one quoted statement, which seems to be indicated for both. And I thought about something I read somewhere, about how the goal of the best servants is to become effectively invisible. If you are serving properly, then the effort of your service should not be noticeable to those you are serving, so a compliment can in fact BE chastisement, because it means you have been noticed. If the one you are serving notices in the moment that you have overcome a problem in a creative way, it means that you were not able to overcome the problem before it became noticeable to them. So for the true servant, the best acknowledgement will come indirectly or after the fact, when someone else has brought the attention of the one being served to how you solved the problem before it became noticeable, or how your solution made the service of others run more smoothly so that their service was also unnoticeable in the moment, or when the issues you have been smoothing over become apparent in your absence. This relates somewhat to a realization I had the other day. I had commented to a friend that, having received a specific request from my guru (one which will require using three of my weakest areas of functioning. Of course. How else will I grow?), I felt desperate to do well. "Then I guess the first thing is to deal with your fears of abandonment," my friend replied, because in the past that has been behind my anxieties about performing tasks well enough for others. After reflecting on that for a full day, I realized that, in this case, I am somehow confident I will not BE abandoned, and it is BECAUSE of that that I want to do well. There is a security of being cared for that makes it feel so much more important that my work meets the requirements; I want to care for my carer, he has told me what care he prefers, and I want to provide it without disruption or overreliance on him. This is a new and wonderful experience for me, and I feel almost like if he openly acknowledged the effort it will be for me, that would ruin it, somehow.

Camphora officianarum: broadleaf evergreen tree. Wood and park are distilled to make camphor. The vapors released by this highly volatile substance have similar effects on the respiratory systems as most people as similarly volatile substances such as eucalyptus and menthol, and it has some irritating/vasodilating properties similar to capsaicin and wintergreen, so it has historically been used in topical medicinal preparations to treat respiratory ailments, usually by rubbing on the chest and inhaling the vapors. I had not heard of it being used for food purposes, but I can see how, with enough sugar and coconut, the flavors might balance. One would want to make certain to get true camphor: that which is available for topical preparations these days is often a synthetic made from turpentine, which I would not suggest ingesting. Also: I realize I still have a lot of reading to do, but it seems like a fair amount of Madhya-lila is Mahaprabhu trying to eat a reasonable amount and his various followers tricking and/or blackmailing him into overeating. It's probably good he was walking so much at that point.
