A Look at Apple's Origins: The Story of Jobs and Wozniak (1976-1993)
im really wondering about the 4k part. is it rendering at 4k like u can see in pc emulation or is it just a pretty crisp clean standard N64 resolution. the reason i say this is because they state playing with scanlines in 4k, if it was rendering the scanlines in 4k the lines would be so thin u prolly wouldn't even hardly see them if rendering games in native 4k. And i would say a lot of people who are buying this believe there getting 4k rendering in there n64 games
Very interesting. I've seen some homebrew but I've never bought any for the 64 I only have 1 for the GBC. I'll have to look for some and give them a try.
Master System was great because it had games like Wonderboy 3 : The Dragon's Trap. Golvellius (Zelda / Zelda 2 style game). Phantasy Star. Shinobi. Hang - On.
6:39 NES Paperboy: The upside down pedestrian 🚶♂️ is break dancing. That was a common sight on sidewalks in the 80's actually.
Yeah I was actually one of those kids that broke out the cardboard and started break dancing back in the days so I should have recognized what it was but the graphics were so bad I couldn't tell what he was doing. Wasn't until I saw the Master system version and I was like oh yeah he's break dancing. 🤣🤣
I never saw the system being sold at our local K-Mart. However I did see it at our local Wal-Mart, and I do remember it getting put on clearance for around $50 down to $40 before disappearing in very early 84 (systems gone by February games by April). I knew no one that actually had one, but I did see them in stranger's carts.
We had them at Kmart's, the blue light special. Never saw it at Walmart though but we didn't have Walmarts where we were back then, we didn't get them until the late '80s. But I do remember on the military base the PX had them and I don't think they sold very well cuz shortly after that they were actually on the checkout aisles of the commissary of all things.
@@RetrogamerGenX It may been a regional/store thing, because there were other things that our local K-Marts did not have that others did including 8-bit Computers. My area was a small city (less than 100K pop) the video game selection was never as big as others. Even during the NES days. Both Venture & Wal-Mart had better selections, and Venture was the first to have the NES sold. Our K-Marts were so behind the times that is why they shut down one of the two stores in the early 90's.
If I recall there was also an early cartridge version of Choplifter for Atari that didn't have such awful colors. It didn't have a moon in the background and used the generic Atari characterset for the people count/etc.. When I was a kid we had both the cartridge and disk version of the game. That was a LONG time ago though!
I am going to use this video as a source of information for my university project, in about a week I will tell you the grade I obtained. :3
Right on. I am honored. Thanks for watching and using the info for your project.Yeah, let me know how you did.
It all comes down to library for me. The NES has that in the bag.
I was about to say its both light and oxidization because of the heat light puts out but you did talk about that so glad to hear it. UV light will actually start bleaching the color which is why that is the most effective method used in retrobrighting.
It was my first console! In Italy was known as "Leonardo" distributed by Gig.
Nice. Yes there were so many clones for the system worldwide. It's cool to see which one came from different parts of the world. Thanks for sharing.😉
Very interesting console. I never heard of it until this video. I wonder how long it took someone to figure out the lie about the ram. Great history video as always. I'm a big fan of them.
Thanks. I vaguely remember this console from when I was a kid. I saw it a couple times in the clearance section at Woolworths back then. Oh course I never got it, and it faded away in my memories. But I'll never forget the box and how much it looked like the Intellivison.
Wow... it even undersold the Virtual Boy.
🤣🤣
By the way, you missed that there is a game for two players on the Master System)
I love how the Space Attack cover art shows a snowspeeder shooting at the Millennium Falcon.
lol Right!🤣
I had no idea Emerson didn't actually develop this, its a shame that the developers from UAL are basically lost to time, would be interesting to see if they went on to do anything else
Thanks for watching and commenting. I do a ton of research for these videos. I reasesrch online, I go to libraries, for this one, I even used microfish at the library to dig up old magazine articles. Yeah, old school. The only microfish they still have. Lol. It's definitely a labor of love that's for sure. But yeah, it was really hard to try to find any information on who the programmers, developers, and engineers were. I found some information on a Chinese website that was translated into English and had some names in it, but honestly I didn't know how accurate that source was so I didn't include it. Oh, I'm sure whoever was involved ended up in some other projects for other electronics, whether it was game systems, TV's, etc... If I ever find out exactly who was involved, I'll do an updated video for the Arcadia so others can learn about those folks too.
@@RetrogamerGenX you have no idea how much I love everything you just said haha I def plan to go through and watch all your vids now. If you havn't already made video on this, might I suggest two weird ones. Bently Only thing I can find out is they made 70s TVs than made the Compu Vision which was an EXTREAMLY cheap pong clone... in 1985 and another suggestion APF, they made calculators than decided to get in the gaming industry and made a pong clone then their own game console with cartridges. I appreciate you keeping history alive doing research on something mostly forgotten. Keep it up!
@@ShawnsTechRescue Thanks brother. Bentley, now there's an electronics name I haven't heard in a while. Growing up I had a pair of really nice Bentley headphones. We also had a Bentley degausser for the TV. Dang man you just brought up some old school memories for me. I think I remember the pong clone your talking about. Probably ran off the AY-3-8500 like 90% of the clones back then.
This is some great, neglected history in the 2nd-gen gaming youtube world. Thanks for putting it together! Another fun, random factoid was Emerson suing over the Arcadia Supercharger (an Atari peripheral that launched about the same time as the Arcadia 2001), forcing Arcadia to change their name to Starpath.
Hey, thanks for watching and commenting my friend. Yeah I had that info about the supercharger in the video but it hit the cutting room floor. Unfortunately I tried to keep the video about 10 minutes long and it still ended up being about 11. I ended up cutting out probably about 3 or 4 minutes from the video. In the uncut version I also went into more detail about the clone systems and what companies made them instead of just showing a list. Sorry about that, but as uncommon as the system is I didn't think anybody would catch on to it.😉 Nice to see people know about the history of the "home arcade" Arcadia system. Thanks for sharing..
I remember finding the Cat Trax cartridge at an out of the way small indoor flea market & actually returned to buy it. I think I traded it for a couple Atari 2600 prototypes.
Cool. Seems to me like a good trade. What proto's did you get?
@@RetrogamerGenX Quadrun & Sinistar.
That's cool. Both are great games. 👍
And a year later came the Famicom.....
Yep, and the Sega sg1000. 🤣🤣
Plus, the name of the game then was official arcade licenses, not knockoff clones. Or well done original titles from the A list publishers, Activision, Imagic
It was laughable back in the day. With the impending CV and Atari Supersystem releases, every teen like me wondered why anyone would release a clearly inferior system, that had a physical design from the 70s and Intv knockoff controllers with lite sticks screwed in, like the aftermarket sticks available at the time for the intv. And graphics on par with the 1977 vcs, which was getting better graphics every month by then from imagic, activision, parker bros, and the latest bank switch Atari carts, unlocking Miners revolutionary video chip for its time. Got my cv August of 82, from an early order placed may or june of 82. The graphics and capabilities of the cv were well known through the first half of 82, reported in all the video game magazines on the racks of every mom and pop pharmacy then. Unless a system was going to meet or beat the cv, or offer something unique techwise like the Vectrex, it was game over for anything else
The funny thing is I didn't know about the system until probably 1984 or so when I saw it in Woolworths of all places in the clearance section. Of course I begged my mom for it but she wouldn't buy it. Apparently she knew that it was a dead system and you couldn't find games for it anymore.
👍
why the moving backgrounds? my adhd brain cant watch your video
Well, my ADHD brain is the one that created it, so... Sorry you felt that way. If you're looking for something with more static backgrounds, keep an eye out for our podcast within the next week or two.
Some of the sp4ecs may have been higher than the Atari 2600, but the definitely look inferior. I'll grant you that some of the graphics may look a little higher resolution than on the 2600, and yes, Crazy Gobbler does look better than Atari's Pac-man, but in general, Atari games just play better and smoother. I also feel that way about a lot of the Intellivision games. Don't get me wrong, i love the Intellivision, but quite a few games on it feel kind of clunky.
I'd agree I'd go with the 2600 all day over this system. Yeah the 2600 had much better game playing control. The Intellivison is far superior console to the 2600 or the Arcadia. But yeah I would have to agree. Some of the game's controls are not all that great. But some work excellent with the disc controller so it just depends.
Why did the developers of Paperboy use the music from Moon Patrol? Also how did they get away with it?
Would you be interested in selling Crazy Gobbler?
If I find another copy you'll be the first to know.
Great video !! Fascinating !! Crazy Gobler looked great !! Space Attack also looked good !!
Thanks!! Yeah, I feel that this system would have been a lot more successful had it launched in the late 1970s.
1977 June 4, Atari 2600 CES debut - lived well until 1983 when crashed happened, but was still produced until 1992. 1977 September market release $199,00 1979 (Intellivision) 1982 (Colecovision) - 1982 November Atari 5200 1984 Atari 7800 1986 Atari 2600 Jr. produced until 1992. (total reign 15 years)
Thanks for the awesome video! I have a quick question about your setup. It looks like you’re connecting an original Atari with its black RCA cable to a flat-screen TV. Could you explain what kind of adapter you're using? Specifically, do you have a way to split the single RCA signal from the Atari into red, white, and yellow connectors to work with an RCA-to-HDMI adapter? I'd appreciate any tips!
The signal that comes out of the Oddessy and Atari is RF. Basically like a mini TV station. So you have to tune your TV to channel 3 or 4 to see the game. So I am using a Rca female to f type male RF adapter. This can be attached to the coax antenna input to your TV. But you can also connect it to a VCR's antenna in and have the VCR de-modulate the signal to composite , ie yellow, red, and white rca plugs. Hope that helps.
I'd take crazy gobbler over PAC man for the Atari 2600 any day of the week
Me too, my friend, me too. 🤣
I have the clone from New Zealand. Tunix.
Nice. There were so many clone systems, with the Tunix being one of them. Thanks for watching and sharing.
Have to love the stolen designs for Star Wars, Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica ships on the cover art for many of the games...
Yeah they do look similar, for sure. 🤣🤣
I actually have one of these, but I've never once hooked it to a TV. It might not even work for all I know. I stuck in a box and forget about it and only discovered it in my basement fairly recently.
If you don't play it, sell it, they are worth a grip of cash now. A few years back they were selling for like $20-30 but now, times that by 20. Crazy money these things are going for. But they are one of the few systems you can still find in the wild for cheap because people think are just junk. You know, because it's not nintendo or sega. lol
1982 was the 1970s. Whether it's the Colecovision, Atari 5200 or the Emerson. Technology didn't improve, it's that 70s technology got cheap enough to be mass market devices. Coleco and Atari were really no better when it came to RAM. Coleco had 17kb of RAM, but only 1k was available. The 5200 had 16k of RAM, but generally you needed most of that for the video.
Yep 70's tech, just like myself.🤣🤣
@@RetrogamerGenX Don't feel bad. I'm 60s tech. I'm what you would call Obsolete.
1982, when the Commodore 64 hit the market with its SID sound chip.
@@OldGameFiction In a 600 Dollar computer. Also, that is why I said it was the 1970s for Atari and Coleco because both were 70s technology.
@tarstarkusz yep good point
The problem is, it wasn't better than the 2600. The 2600 is a powerhouse for 1977. It just happened to be uniquely susceptible to small ROMs and the lack of RAM. But cartridge technology kept getting bigger and engineers figured out how to expand the 2600's RAM on the cartridge slot. You can really see this with modern games, not to mention what can be accomplished with a helper chip in games like Mappy. But even games like Aardvark, as good as it looks, has no helper chip or extra RAM. Just a 32k ROM. Note how none of the other 8 bit systems really benefit that much from the larger ROMs. They just make larger (in scope) games. The capability of the system does not improve. The 2600 is a real time system. It has no video RAM or bios. If you want a score, you as the programmer need to create a font and make it part of the kernel. It does not have a fixed resolution or even frame rate. These are both created by the kernel created by the programmer. Games for the 2600 dramatically improved in a way other game systems never did.
Yeah I'd pick the 2600 over this in a heartbeat, whether I'm programing or a player. But like it's been pointed out to me recently, games trump system specs. Since Atari is the system that had all the games, in house and 3rd party, they attracted all the brilliant minds that could coax the system into doing things it shouldn't be able to. Where as the Arcadia had all in house programing, no third party, and well, quite frankly at the time of its release, it had sub par specs. But still better than the Atari 2600, albeit slightly. One thing I can say, is the sound , argh.. is horrible from the Arcadia. Most annoying beeps and blops and blips i've ever heard. LOL
@@RetrogamerGenX You said: But still better than the Atari 2600, albeit slightly. I disagree. As you mention, the sound is abysmal. The best looking 2600 games look way better. It is very low resolution, the 8 color mode is 128x104. I would say it is more on par with either the O2 or the Channel F. If you compare it to the early 2k and some of the early 4k games, I would say you are correct. But the 2600 improved dramatically with larger cart sizes and more RAM, like the Sara Chip games. OTOH, it was a total flop and was never really exploited to the full potential. There is no homebrew for it (that I am aware of) either. Looking at the games it initially appeared the system didn't have sprites, only character graphics. But I found one game, a Bandai exclusive that appears to have a monocolored sprite. So perhaps there were at least mono sprites. It's a shame it didn't at least do better in Japan.
need "mockingboard" sound card 🙂
Double Dragon. NES better gameplay. NES better soundtrack SEGA better graphics. SEGA Too hard.
I had the SNES, absolutely loved it. Fave games, super tennis, madden, mario kart. And to add i was the best at all of them 💪🏻
Oh yeah... Madden!!
Em geral, o NES possui melhor jogabilidade, enquanto SMS entrega melhores gráficos. Aqui no Brasil, o SMS teve um reinado absoluto!
I was a kid in the 80a I remember these as new The Master system was graphically superior but; the Nintendo had the games. We're talking real game-changing classic. Super Mario Bros ,Zelda, Contra, Ninja Gaiden (the original trilogy) Castlevania, Mike Tyson, the catalog is endless,it's not even close. Similar to the PS2 and the original XBOX.
Sega Master System always wins over NES. 👍
Better SMS than NES
When i was a kid i always thought the SMS as inferior crappy system compared to the NES. The games on SMS where not as good as the NES. did not have anything that matched SMB 1 ,2 3, MEGAMAN etc
california games would have made a good comparison.
The SMS was a great system. It actually got me back into console gaming after a friend got one. But I ended up getting a NES - for me it had the better games even though graphically the SMS was better. Why aren't you doing paper deliveries in Paperboy? Was a shit game anyway.. :)
I did some deliveries... 🤣🤣 Yeah not one of my favorites, but the arcade game is OK.
Metroid, Legend of Zelda, Super Mario, Mega Man ... there can be only one
The nes is better all round it plays more fluid
In NES Paperboy - you said you did not know what one character was doing -- answer -- breakdancing !!! Marble Madness -- Game too short - had four levels !! Rad Racer for NES -- bad music !!! Annoying sounds !!! With Master System -- many games have poor controls !!
Great video !!!! Unfortunately , with most Master System games -- music not good !!! To its advantage -- bright colorful graphics !!
The SMS is superior to the NES in terms of hardware. The NES is notorious for flickering because of the way the graphics work. It's 2 years newer than the NES, though it bogged down in legacy hardware in the SG1000. But Nintendo was far stronger in games. There must have been 1000 games over its lifetime. Strong 3rd party support as well.
Yep the SMS is a distant cousin to the MSX, compared to whatever Frankenstein 6502 madness Nintendo was doing with thte NES. lol Nintendo had the 3rd party market sewed up. At least in the N. American market.
@@RetrogamerGenX The MSX is much closer to the SG1000 and Colecovision.
Enduro for the 2600 and I'm pretty sure Turbo Arcade game had day/night transitions.
Yep you're right, they did.
14:45 Don't forget the SMS has a trackball available. That is the only way to play marble madness.
