Dad Breaks Par at Age 78! @ Alhambra Golf Course (4K)
This was a round I will never forget.
Last week, Dad, my brother, and I played a round at Alhambra Golf Course. During that visit, the tees had been moved up for maintenance, and to our amazement, we made a combined 8 birdies-a feat that left us pretty stunned and thrilled. Fast forward to this week, and to our delight, we discovered the tees were still in their forward position, setting the stage for another memorable day.
Dad, who is 78 as of this round, has accomplished so much in this game. Self-taught at 45, he’s carded three hole-in-ones, and last year, he shot his age-a milestone I consider even more impressive than the aces. Earlier this year, he topped that achievement again by shooting a 76. Yet, the one thing my dad had never done was break par in a regulation round of golf.
As his distance off the tee has declined with age, breaking par felt like a fleeting dream despite his super-sharp short game and putting. But Alhambra GC, with its shorter layout, offers him a fighting chance to hit more greens in regulation. It’s also perfect for my brother, who’s new to the game, and for a casual golfer like me-I always feel I have a shot to break par here. (And to anyone who dismisses Alhambra as "too easy," I challenge you to give it a try. Its quirks and surprises will test your game in ways you don’t expect.)
Dad came out firing. Early on, he strung together three birdies in a row-something he’d never done in his 30+ years of golf. He protected that early lead, battling through a few missed putts, and arrived at the 18th hole needing just a par to finish at 1-under.
The final putt was a nervy downhill 4-footer-a shot that felt bigger than the distance suggested. (The low camera angle from my push cart off the green also doesn't do it any justice.) When the ball dropped, it felt like a profound sense of accomplishment. I knew I’d just witnessed one of my all-time favorite memories in the making.
Breaking par at age 78 isn’t just a golf achievement. It’s a testament to my dad’s disciplined life, his care for his body, and his unwavering efforts to live with integrity, generosity, and joy.
For me, this surpasses the hole-in-ones, shooting his age, and even his greatest feat: inspiring both his sons to love this beautiful, maddening game. Picking up golf again in 2016 brought me closer to my dad than ever, and seeing my brother discover it later in life feels like an unexpected gift.
Golf has given us moments of connection, competition, and laughter that I’ll treasure forever.
Thank you, Alhambra Golf Course, for being the canvas of so many unforgettable memories. And thank you, Dad, for teaching me not just the game, but how to respect the course, honor the rules, and to always play with integrity and heart.
Happy Birthday, Dad! Love, -Mig.
(And yes, we smashed our record for most birdies in a round! 🐤)

Playing from the Forward Tees @ Alhambra Golf Course (4K)
Переглядів 992Місяць тому
A special round with my Dad and Brother. We arrived at the course that day and discovered the tee boxes were under maintenance, so we’d be playing from the forward tees. Playing the front tees has been trending recently on UA-cam golf so I was pretty excited to try it out to see what happens. At first glance, a shorter course might seem like a walk in the park, but I quickly learned it had its ...

Let the quest begin. Playing a very short and scorable muni course (with a lot of personality and great conditions) to give myself the best chance of breaking par. I've flirted with it a few times, shooting 71 (E) in multiple occasions, but that elusive sub-par round has remained just out of reach. (For context, my GHIN handicap index was 4.1 going into this round.) Recorded: August 3, 2024 @ A...

Located in my hometown of Arcadia, CA, Santa Anita Golf Course is both a scenic and historical landmark. This course holds a special place in my heart as it's where I first started learning golf with my dad at the age of 9. Regrettably, I stopped playing golf in high school and didn't pick up a club for another 20 years ... ... until one fateful afternoon a few years ago (in 2016.) I called my ...

Another fun round w/ Dad and my brother Alex who just started playing about a year ago. Had a chance to break par but ended up tying my best score (71) when I blew a 4-footer on 18. 😂 Alhambra GC is a great (and very friendly) local public course in the SGV. While the total yardage is shorter than most, the course does present some pretty interesting challenges. There are a few narrow holes tha...

An unexpected and very welcome perk of working at home is the fact that I now have a piano right next to my workstation. My routine of taking a brief walk around my studio every couple hours to decompress has been replaced with quality time w/ the kids and mini practice sessions during render breaks and between Zoom meetings. Here is a piece by Beethoven which I felt captured the spirit of the ...
I’m not crying This is the greatest UA-cam golf video of all time.
I love Alhambra! Great video btw! The sound is superb!
Aside from the low scores (my dad and I combine for 2 birds max), this felt so relatable that I had to comment. Chill and shady Alhambra GC is a fantastic one to play with pops. Congrats to him and to you kids too. I know those shaggy lies well and found that toe-down chipping helps a bit. Ymmv.
Thanks! It's truly a blessing to have this golf course-it's such a unique setup where both young and old can enjoy the game. "Chill" really is the perfect way to describe it. Appreciate the chipping tip! I used to only use my 58º around the greens but recently switched to my pitching wedge to play more bump and runs-will definitely keep the toe-down technique in mind for the next round!
Congrats to you and your dad for personal bests!! Your dad is awesome! Happy belated birthday to him! 86 is my best at Alhambra. Hope to run into you guys there one of these days.
Thanks for the kind words-I'll share your comments with him! 💙 See you on the course. 😎
I wish i can play with my dad one more time. Loved every second。 爸爸加油!
Thank you-I try to treasure every moment. Glad you enjoyed it. 💙
Cool round, thanks for posting! Have you played at Oak Valley or Los Serranos?
This was great, no frills, just golf! And very good golf also! Where is Dad from, I mean I can guess China or Taiwan? Absolutely beautiful and heart warning. Well done Mig and Dad. Inspiring.
Thank you for the kind words! 💙 My dad is originally from Taiwan. He married my mom there, and they moved to Argentina, where my brother and I were born. We then moved to the U.S. when we were very young and have been here ever since. Both of my parents speak Chinese, English, and Spanish. 😁
@@migl9000 That's amazing. Good luck on your golf journey!
I have the same nike shoes, they are so nice
Nice! You have excellent taste. 😁 I love these shoes because they’re so versatile-you can wear them pretty much anywhere, not just on the golf course.
magnifique !
Merci! 💙
Awesome wholesome content and your dad is my favorite ❤️ you guys rock!
Thank you! That means a lot. 💙 Dad is definitely my all-time favorite playing partner!
nice playing! your Dad is a G!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. 💙
Dad has the most unconventional swing and puts, but all works.
I’ve studied his swing with great fascination over the years. In short, he’s reached an age where he needs to limit his body rotation to avoid injury, relying instead on directing his club path with his arms and a well-timed weight shift. And it's a complete mystery to me how he manages to sink putts with that putting stroke. 😂
what tee does your dad play? he's so good
Nowadays Dad plays from the white tees but will occasionally play from the blues on shorter courses. (We all played from the blues in this video because they were moved up that day.) He doesn't hit it as far anymore but he never seems to miss a fairway and his short game is still exceptionally sharp.
So glad I saw this great video glad you both did well
Thank you! 💙
If i could like this video twice i would.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. 💙
Absolutely love your videos! Memories for life!
Thank you! I really appreciate it. I'll definitely be re-watching this one years from now. 💙
Perfect course to break par....several drivable par 4's....short course but tricky
Yes-I’m so glad this course exists! It seems easy at first, but it’s deceptively challenging and forces you to play strategically. Lots of risk/reward holes and you still have to putt well to put a good round together.
I found myself smiling throughout the entire video. The sound quality was superb 👌. From swing to ping 😀. But I was most impressed of how clear you conveyed the joy you guys were having. Thanks man. Quality upload 🫡
Thanks for the kind words! It was a joy to put it together. Glad you enjoyed it. 💙
Algorithm brought this video to me, so glad it did. A memory you will all have forever. Why golf will always be the greatest sport.
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it, and I couldn’t agree more-it's absolutely the greatest game! This was definitely a round I'll cherish and look back on fondly for years to come. 💙
Damn Mig nice video! Your dad hitting under par at that age is a momentous occasion! Makes me wish my dad played golf haha. Nonetheless your tee shots are so good. Cant wait for the next one!
Thank you! We were pretty stunned by it when it happened. The best he's ever shot there these last couple of years was a 76. When he made those 3 birdies in a row on Holes 2, 3, and 4, I realized the round was going to be special. 🙂
Nice video! Great family.
I appreciate that. Thank you! 💙
this is such a great video love it !
Thank you! 💙
oh my, thank god the algorithm recommended this video. I play all the time at Alhambra and even if it was a short day its still super challenging. Well done Dad!
Thank you! I often play there as well and have found that the forward tees really challenge you to rethink your strategy on many of the holes.
You deserve way more subscribers love the content and happy birthday to your pops and breaking par!
Thanks for the kind words! Just putting these videos together is reward enough. Glad people are out there enjoying them. 😊
I'm not crying. You're crying. It's not even his channel, but your dad has become one of my favorite UA-cam golfers. Accepts the mishits. Celebrates the good shots. And always celebrates the success of his playing partners. No better example of what it means to be a golfer right there!
Thanks @MikeGolfsOregon! - That means a lot and I'll pass along your kind words to him. I presented this video to Dad for his birthday today (he's currently overseas) and he said he had tears in his eyes as well. Amazing how this game draws people together and brings out the best in us!
Amazing content! Keep posting
@@fshn7562 Thanks!
such good content, very relaxing, quality fam time and the edits are on point! unique markers like the target are informative and the birdie addition is cherry on top ‼️
Thanks! Playing golf with Dad is definitely something I look forward to every week. Glad the graphics are helpful!
is it really an eagle from the red tees? must've played around 240 max
Sure it counts! The real fun of these challenges is seeing just how low you can score. Playing from the front tees gives us hacks a chance to experience what it feels like to truly go low and enjoy the game in a whole new way. :)
@@migl9000 agreed... i'll have to try it again. Did it once at Dad Miller, so I know what you're talking about
I really enjoy your videos! What do you use to record and for shot tracers?
Thank you-glad you like them! I shoot everything with my phone (currently an iPhone 15 Pro Max) and I use Adobe After Effects to add the tracers on my computer.
Good video, like the format
Thank you!
nice job!
Thanks!

Such a clean video. Keep it up
Thanks! Will do.
this was a good watch
Thanks!
You gotta make more of these bro! I love the edit and styling. You'll break it eventually there haha!
Thanks! I feel like it's a matter of "when" and not "if" - just got to keep it together!
i got a 68 there... 18th used to be a par 4
That's a great score!
Nice round. I love your dad's reactions and positivity. Good vibes. And the approach shot on 18 would make a great thumb imo.
Thanks! He's definitely my favorite playing partner. Appreciate the suggestion as well! (I might save the epic thumb idea for if/when I achieve my objective.) :)
back swing is slower than SUNG JAE IM
aaaaaah that two putt at the end was murder! great game. loved the family hugs after the birdies at the end haha
Definitely will be tuning in more. Underrated channel and golfer.
Gravity and Newton take over at 2:27. Thank you science!
Great round, great video. Happy to be 99th sub. I use the same set up for recording, other than rocking the 12mini as opposed to 15max. Your picture quality looks excellent and your editing is on point. Keep it up!
Thanks! You've got some really professionally shot and edited videos as well!
Really enjoy watching your videos! Keep making more! What other courses do you play?
Thanks! The courses I play tend to change with the seasons, largely depending on which tee times I can get. This month, I’ve mostly been alternating between Industry Hills and Alhambra GC (two very diametrically opposite types courses but both equally fun. 😄) I also recently played Diamond Bar for the first time and really enjoyed it.
swing looks odd at the finish but he scores well
Good playing! My best round at SA is also even par. 👍
Well done, I Loved it. What did you use to shoot this on? Would love to know your specs on how you shot this and maybe join you on a round since I’m LA based as well.
Thank you! Nothing fancy-I just captured these on my phone (using an iPhone 15 Max). My primary goal is to maintain the pace of play, so I attach my phone to my pushcart and position it behind me on every shot (or use a mini-tripod that I just throw down and just figure out the framing later in editing.) I shoot at 4K so I can shift the footage around for better framing/composition in post. :) I try to play once a week w/ my dad if I'm lucky, happy to get a round in together sometime!
I love this video.
I really like the style of your video! Keep it up!
Thank you!
super dope! Subscribed within the first 30 seconds of the video. Love the quick fast different angles, straight to the point. Keep it up!!
Great round! Fantastic shot into 12!
Thanks Cameron! Glad I made that club change. :) Miss our rounds together!
