    Shame, what a discouraging and challenging disease to content with, I've heard of folks losing their entire collections for not getting on matters soon enough or being oblivious to it in the first place. I'm in a region that has yet been deemed free of the disease, though this summer I came across a very infected plant at a local nursery, so well I guess it's here now! :(

    The best video I have seen for planting a B&B tree. This is my go to resource for instructing installers on how to correctly plant a B&B tree. The only difference in procedure that I follow is to dig the hole at least 2X the diameter of the ball. That allows for backfill of a soil/compost mixture if needed. Not all soils are as lovely as found in your arboretum. If we are planting in compacted or subsoil situations it is the recommendation of our state dept of natural resources to backfill with a soil/compost mixture.

    What about bacterial leaf scorch with oaks going forward? Arborists are not recommending them with climate warming.

    • @scottarboretum
      @scottarboretum 3 місяці тому

      Bacterial leaf scorch only affects oaks in the red and black oak group and there are treatments available for disease. We have many oaks in the red and black oak group with very few occurrences of bacterial leaf scorch.

    To determine the correct angle to use the sharpening stone, it helps to use a black marker to blacken the shiny part of the blade. Then use the stone on the blade. Angle the stone so it "erases" the black marker. Flat side of blade should NOT be sharpened. If flat side of blade is not flat, you should probably get a replacement blade. Good presentation.

    In response to a question in our chat during the premiere, we have not had an earwig problem with our dahlias this year. Our biggest issue has been thrips. We have been treating them with horticulture oil. Please note to only apply the oil on cloudy days as the treatment can burn the plant on sunny days. We also cut some flower buds because this is where the thrips live.
