Being a parent of a child with a disability is challenging. I have triplets, including two boys with ASD who have significant developmental and behavioural issues. For more than 10 years I have been working through these issues and developmental stages with a range of speech therapists, OT’s and behavioural therapists, accumulating a wealth of knowledge and experience.
On this channel I want to share with you some of that knowledge and the practical ideas that I have put in place in order to create more meaningful engagements with my boys and to promote their independence.
My hope is that it will empower you to continue to invest in your child, try new things and see their potential.
Enjoy!

Thank you
Lovely. Very useful for a teacher just starting to use it with a student.
Damn you can tell he tiptoes a lot with them calves
This was such a wonderful video thank you
vos enfants autistes ne portent pas de protections urinaires ? Ils sont propres ? Bravo à vous , pas toujours facile de s'occuper d'ados autistes
You’re a really good mum
Aww thanks! I’ve worked hard, but it’s been worth it to see them master new skills (even if it takes years!) and to see the smiles on their faces.
thank you! i'm thinking about doing a visual schedule for myself, this video will help
That’s great! We’ve used one for years and the boys find it helpful. Routine and structure can be so helpful for them! Let me know if you get stuck on anything or have any questions about it, happy to help! My email address is in the contacts section.
Did the boys get paid for the job?
Sorry for the late reply! Yes they did get paid, it wasn’t a lot, we did it more for the experience. They have a limited understanding of the concept of money other than it buys stuff. The boys are turning 18 soon and will be finishing school. I am thinking of them doing the catalogue delivery job again because I want them to understand that you can’t always do what you want all the time and that you need to work like everyone else does! Anyway I plan to make a video on them transitioning to life after school in the near future which will explain my thinking on this a bit further!
Amazing, thanks so much for sharing 💛 This really helps structure our p2g reading pages. Your videos are so helpful, inspirational, compassionate, comprehensive, kind, and educational. 🤍🩶🧡
Thanks so much for your comments! Sorry for the late reply! Using this method really gives them a feeling that they are joining in the reading and that they have a part to play - joint engagement!
What is the support prolo?
Hi Bianca, Whoever is supporting or engaging with the boys uses a second iPad mini with the Proloquo2go app on it. They use that one to model and talk to the boys, rather than using the boys Prolo. This is to reinforce that their Prolo is ‘their voice’ I talk a bit more about this in the video ‘4 ways to make Proloquo2go more accessible’.
Hello Maman, Thank you so much for you most definitely have enlightened ways in which I need to better support my 6 years old (almost 7) son. A true clarity on what often seems so distant -life of autistic teen and how life can be. I was in awe. Between us, I re-winded the video, paused and definitely saving the video. You and Dad are just waooo! ps. Hello to the boys from London with love.
This video made me think. I say ‘Good looking (at Mummy)!’ etc to my daughter, having been taught it by a Consultant/Therapist years ago. But now she’s older more natural language would be better. Thanks for another thought-provoking video!
Thanks!
That is a really interesting method.
My daughter has autism, I often feel exhausted and overwhelmed. Watched two of your videos and really enjoyed them, some great advice and I love the quotes, thank you!
Thanks Bev, you are definately not alone in being exhausted and overwhelmed! I am about to have both boys SSG (student support group) meetings at school next week and they can be quite frustrating. I’m afraid their school places the bar pretty low in expectations. Thats why i work so hard with them outside of school! How do you go with your daughters school?
She goes to a Japanese special school. In her primary school their main goal seems to be to keep the children happy. I think junior high school (from this April) is a bit more ‘serious’ with more life skills goals, we’ll see. We tried mainstream with a team and IEP meetings years ago but she was too severe for mainstream. You’re great working with your boys, we have to do more at home, we used to do therapy but sort of gave up 😢 We should try with iPads as you do. I look forward to watching more of your videos, wishing you all the best at the SSG meetings 🍀
But the child needs to read and look at the pictures?
Do you mean on the Prolo? If so, Yes, sometimes the child can one overwhelmed by sensory input around them and can’t always hear/process what you are verbalising, so having the pictures and words displayed on the screen gives them more time to process what you are trying to say. Does this answer your question?
Did you have any problems with them with the food?
Yes and no. I’m going to have to do a video about that, so much to say! Have you had trouble with children and eating?
@@thetread9212 yes a lot it is so frustrating right now he just want to eat pizza and that’s it (he is 5) and before that just ham and eggs 🥹
@@mabelmeza3622 Have you tried making your own pizzas? There’s a lot you can hide in the ingredients. You can put a few different herbs and garlic in the sauce, you could even cook some red pepper and then purée that and put some in the sauce. Add these things slowly and increase over time. What toppings does he like?
How old are they?
They just turned 16!!
Great videos Dallas- yes you are doing a great job! Praying for you guys. God bless😊🙏
Thanks Ben!
Is that quote Richard Simmons the exercise guy?
I made an error there, and kept meaning to make a note about that. It’s not by Richard Simmons the exercise guy but Rich Simmonds who is an author and influencer.
@@thetread9212 Thanks! I’ll have to check him out!
what School do they go to
They go to an Autism Specific School
I hate the unexpected (aspie here)
I think we all do to some degree, but I imagine its worse for autistic people?! You can’t just turn it off or always push through?
@@thetread9212 i can’t always function with sudden change
@@haannguyen4402 same here. I have learned to anticipate the unexpected.
You are right but technically ive learnt it's not the unexpected but the expected I'm okay with what's in my mind and what I have planned to do but expectation from anyone for any reason is stressful this is why phonecalls and conversations that aren't initiated by us are difficult because we are expected to talk at the same time that it's unexpected to our thought process or plan but the expectation from the other person to talk is the issue🤣🤣 it can come across as being controlling to some in my experience but it's due to extreme high levels of anxiety I've learned so we can only deal with what we expect from ourselves what we have laid out in our brains not expectation from others or life demands. That was so hard to explain and probably sounds like gibberish 🤣🤦🏼♀️😬
I love that you mentioned the confusion of "open ended points" to asd people, its something I really struggle with
Very nice video l learned a lot, God bless you all ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Thanks! God bless you and your family this Christmas!
Nice boys, wishing the family well.
thanks 😊
Curious... do you use verbal language with him too, so he can interact with non-family or will he only listen/able to understand to communicate when others use the IPad? I watch Fathering Autism and they use an AAC with their daughter with Autism.
Yes we do use verbal language with Ash. He has fairly good receptive language skills most of the time. Most people will speak verbally to him. We use the Prolo some of the time to communicate to model language and also expose him to new words or words that he doesn’t use much. We find when we are out that there is so much sensory input and that speaking to him on the Prolo helps him to focus on what we are trying to say to him much better.
Thank you so much for your video. I have son has autısm He is seven. Love from İstanbul ❤❤
Thanks so much, you are welcome! How is your son going? What are services and support like in your country for people with autism?
Occupational therapy, special education, language training five days a week but These are paid. The state offers two lessons a week for free. There are special classes in schools for school-age children, where they receive one-on-one education. ❤ in turkey.
would like to get one for my son can you reach out to me?

amazing🎉🎉As Educator my self, I couldn’t emphasize more on have hands on experience focus on job and those prerequisite! As just observing, the job itself consists so many parts, follow orders, problem solving, encounter new situations, etc!
Thanks, I find it so important to keep exposing them to new experiences!
My mother wasn’t aware of my autism diagnosis all- she knew that I was very late on my milestones I only started talking and how I was about seven and I have sensory processing disorder as well I’m not non-verbal but I do have some speech do it as well I also have two therapists- who help with help that xx 🍑☘️🌺
I think time of diagnosis is different for everyone. I had triplets so they were monitored closely and so autism was picked up early-on (2 1/2 years old). having good therapists to support you is great!!
My verbal, autistic son is getting Proloquo2go next week since he has selective mutism and sometimes cannot communicate his basic needs and wants. This video was very helpful as a parent getting ready to learn to use it.
Hi Becky, That’s great! I’m glad it was helpful. I’m very passionate about promoting Proloquo2go! Our other son Jet is verbal but has difficulty communicating, so we are trying to encourage him to use it. It’s so important that they are still able to express themselves even if they can say a few words!
This is awesome, way to go Ash and Mumma! ❤️
Thank you so much!!
Great advice and thank you so much for sharing your family so that we feel less alone in our Nuro diversity Community❤
Thanks Lisa! We are definitely not alone in the Neurodiversity community ! I imagine that across what ever country each of us lives in there are many parents going through similar struggles each morning. We should be proud that each morning we get up and do it all again. Some mornings go ok and some feel like disasters but we through it!!
Thank you. My daughter is getting prolo next week
Hi Courtney, that’s awesome! I’ve made a few other videos on Prolo that could be helpful. Let me know how you go and if you have any questions feel free to reach out to me via email!
Do they wear pull-ups or diapers or underwear ?
Both boys wear everyday underwear. They are 95%toilet trained. They just still need to be prompted to wipe, flush and wash hands from time to time.
How do you download it?
Hi Itzcrowns, sorry for the late reply, I didnt see your comment. Do you mean the communication app? You can download that from the Apple iTunes App Store
@@thetread9212 Ok, thank you very much!
Oh wow what a great technique. I can't wait to implement this at home.
Thanks, its a process but has definitely been worth it!
@@thetread9212 How many children do you have
@@karenveal4581 I have 3 children - they are triplets. Ash and Jet have a sister that is neurotypical.
How many therapists show we use at one time.
It really depends on what your child needs are. When the boys were younger they were doing speech, OT and Aquatic OT once a week, or sometimes once a fortnight. It also depends on how they are engaging with the therapist and coping with going to sessions on top of school. It’s a balancing act between between early intervention and how much are they actually getting out of the sessions. Thats why its great to get support workers or therapy assistants involved so it can be incorporated with their home routines. Hope that answers your question!
Great information. Thank you for all your hard work.
Thanks! Jumping into the world of therapies for your autistic child can be very overwhelming, so I want to help others find it a little less daunting!
Thanks Dallas that was great. We had a 1st yr graduate student teaching Antonio Chat Fusion I think she had no idea. I was getting so frustrated with them.
I’m sorry you’ve had such a frustrating time with them!
