Earth Talks - Wise Practices for Living with Wildlife: Josh Welsh (Y2Y)
Canmore has been a leader in human-wildlife coexistence within mountain communities throughout North America for many years. It's management of household waste, for instance, is still the gold standard and a model for many others who wish to achieve what we have in the Bow Valley. Biosphere's Wildsmart program is also a revered model for many tourism-based communities who wish to engage and educate their residents and visitors.
Mitigating conflict with wildlife and education are early, and necessary, steps towards achieving sustained coexistence. To get there however, we must continue to find ways to lead and shape culture in ways that ensure wildlife are considered and respected throughout all the decisions we make as a community. The future health of this truly unique place, as well as other communities who look to us for leadership, depend upon it.

Oh and 99.9% of these Canadian Law Makers don’t go out into the Wilderness and all they Do and ever had Done was Push Pens and Pencils there Entire Lives, Read Papers and Studied out of Books but have never actually had an Encounter before. I’m Sorry I have nothing Against Canada I think it’s Absolutely Incredibly Beautiful. My Biggest Problem is with the Lying, POS, Cowardly Canadian Lawmakers and Government. Yes the Canadian Government and Lawmakers are the Biggest Cowards in the World.

Y’all Don’t ever Rely on Bear Spray. At Times it Does Work however there are a lot of Times and Incidents that it has Failed and Infuriated the Bear even more resulting Serious Injury and Death. Carry a Large Caliber, Hard Hitting Firearm loaded with Hardcast Ammo. Yes carry a Gun in Canada May be Illegal but when it Comes to your life and the Lives of your loved ones tell the Canadian Government to Go F**k themselves and eat a D**k. Remember it’s better to be Judged by 12 then to be Carried by 6. Also everyone knows that the Government will not Comply with their own Laws. Stay Safe out there People

Thanks for an excellent video. Easily understood and easy practises to adopt. The pink cell phone in the bear's back pocket was a nice touch of modernity. What advice do you have for hikers encountering a bear on their return route? How does one know that the bear has left the area? Do you have advice for motorized recreationists - motorcyclists and ATV riders? There is no problem making noise but the risk of coming upon an animal quickly, and the difficulty in backing away, is cause for concern. When we meet horses we immediately shut down the machines and remove our helmet to avoid spooking the animal but none of that seems applicable to something that might not recognize us as the apex predator. If we can each go on our own peaceful way, so much the better.

Educating locals is great. How do you propose to educate the millions of visitors that we get here in the hotels/suites, vacation rentals, and air bnb/vrbo rentals (especially if they are illegal)?
