1975 Land Rover Series 3 - Restoration (Part 7) - Getting the newly rebuilt engine running.
Land Rover Series 3 found parked up for 15 years. The reason it was parked up was because it just wouldn’t start one day. I bought it and trailered it home.
This video just shows what was involved to get the newly rebuilt engine running.

      Hey! Thanks for the comment. Yeah I wouldn’t bother rebuilding them if decent aftermarket replacements were available. Unfortunately they aren’t so we’ve got to take our chances. They’re not to bad if you take your time doing them though. Thanks for watching. I’m really glad you enjoyed it👍

      🤣🤣🤣 there is nothing better than the kindness of strangers. I really appreciate you sending over that adapter…at the very least it told me that I need to work on my 3d drawing and printing skills🤣 Yeah I think I’m going to stick with the one I made. I just hope it clears the reinforcements on the bonnet🤞it’s not a big deal if it doesn’t as it will be easy to modify or make a new one. Let me know how you get on if you have a go at making one yourself.

    • @RetroModified
      @RetroModified 2 місяці тому

      Hi, Thanks for the kind comment👍 🤣 my knowledge came from years of making mistakes…I still make the mistakes and I’m still learning. I did actually consider going electric with it when I first got it. It might still be something that I might look into in the future but while I can still get petrol easily and because I live in a very rural area and would need a large range to get anywhere. I’ll stick with the old internal combustion engine for a bit longer. Thanks for watching🙂

    Started working on my 1952 Land Rover today which has not run for 30 years, this part is completly stuck and I was looking for a video on whats inside. Dont think I will do the job myself but it has been very helpful to understand how it works, thanks for that!

      Hey! Thanks for your comment. I’m really pleased you found it helpful even if you’re not planning to rebuild it yourself. That was the point of the video…to either let folk decide yes I can have a go at that or to decide nope it’s not for me. Wow 30 years sitting is a long time. Hopefully it was under cover. Mine sat for 15 years outside which didn’t do it any favours, it still started up and ran fine with minimal effort which I was surprised at. Good luck with your rebuild!! I wish you all the best👍

    How long did the swivel ball rebuild take? Thinking to do mine but wondering a proper schedule as I work a 9-5 during the week

    • @RetroModified
      @RetroModified 8 місяців тому

      Hi, If you’re just doing the swivels and not bearings then it really won’t take that long. I think I could do just a pair of swivels in an afternoon. However that does depend on lots of things… The tools you have available. I’ve got a well kitted out garage and still struggle for the right tool sometimes. The parts you have available. If it’s your only vehicle then you need to be 100% sure you’ve got everything before you start. The swivels kit don’t have everything you need. I can’t remember exactly what was missing from the kits but there was something. Possibly a gasket. Shims, order more because the kits don’t have enough and they’re cheap. And be prepared for the unexpected. You could pull the hubs apart and find the UJ’s in the shafts are worn. So waiting on part turning up to fix stuff like that can delay things. And if the budget can stretch far enough order up new nuts and bolts. Personally I prefer to go with new old stock genuine Land Rover if I can find them.

    Great vid as I got some kicks to finally start my RHD 88 marine blue 1976 Series 3 project . Do the 8x16 rims stay a little bit off the wing panel? ( Front/rear) . What about the driving circle? Looks great.

    • @RetroModified
      @RetroModified 9 місяців тому

      Hi, Thanks for your comment. The wheels and tyre tread are within the wheel arches front and rear. The only part that does stick out past the arches are the tyre sidewalls. I don’t know for sure if the wheels will clear the bodywork when off-roading as the old suspension had rusted up solid and was not giving any suspension travel at all. For the turning circle unfortunately I can’t comment on how they compare with standard wheels as I never drove it on its standard wheels but it does turn fine and the steering isn’t to heavy. Happy new year!

    • @RetroModified
      @RetroModified 11 місяців тому

      Hi, thanks for your comment. I’m just using a cheap pipe bender like this one www.ac-one.co.uk/mastercool-4-in-1-tube-bender-316-14-516-38-180-17586-p.asp?gclid=EAIaIQobChMImdrEhfKVggMV1evtCh1maA1NEAQYAiABEgKwk_D_BwE which will give you a nice bend up to 180 degrees. For any larger radius bends I just bent it round a large socket.

    I have a 2.5 petrol in my series 3, the absolute best in a series! same feel as the ol 2.25, but a lot more power. Please dont bore it to oversize, it is very good as is, mine pulls up steep hills in 4th with the overdrive on, and it is super smooth

      The old Range Rover is known for blowing out a front tire....then sorta cartwheeling afterward because of the height of the car This is symptomatic with the British car industry....come up with innovative designs and not sorting out the final stuff. (It originates from the oligarchy which controls Britain....theyre looking for a fat buck rather than long term planning.....it enabled the Japanese to outclass Land Rover and steal the market...which is very difficult to claw back.
