元は荒野の大悪党「ハイエナヤムチャ」として砂漠を駆け回っていた盗賊。孫悟空の話を盗み聞きしたことでドラゴンボールの存在を知り、女性の前であがる癖を克服する為、悟空たちを騙し共に冒険に加わる。旅の過程の中で女性が苦手という弱点は克服したものの、今度はその反動で浮気症になってしまう。
初登場時から実力そのものは高いが、作中では初戦で未知の強豪と当たり、相手の強さを読者に見せつけるためとなるパターンが多い。その為に勝利シーンは少なく、作品内で勝利した相手は天下一武道会予選時の対戦相手、兎人参化の部下、占いババのしもべである透明人間のスケさん、そして幼少期のチチのみである（アニメでは後述の通り、これらに加え何度か勝利している）
