    After I laughed hysterically, this is my question to Film Punk; Is a video like this what an actor needs to have and submit to show their talent to producers when their auditioning for a role? On a personal level. That video could have been a television program itself. So cool Stanley, so cool. I'm only able to use myself for every part in my comedy videos. What's hard is trying to keep them separate individual characters. Prosthetics are coming. Wigs go only so far. Your fun to watch and learn from. Always, my best to you.

    It boggles my mind that people think Jack is a method actor. Clearly in this short documentary, he is not. He goes from acting like a murderous psychopath to being smiley and affable with cast and crew within seconds. Maybe he can easily tap into the dark zone for a scene and then tap out with no problem and maybe he has other approaches, but he’s not at all psychologically immersive, just IMO.

    • @haro82

      This is exactly what a good actor should be able to do. The whole idea of method acting is ridiculous.

    I have the movie poster for this movie framed and mounted in my basement staircase. It is a yellow poster with a weird looking creature or bald boy with its mouth opened and a look of shock within the black print of the title. He is made up of black dots. When you go up or down the steps the eyes of this creature follows you. Truly eerie and unexpected. Well designed poster. Sometimes it really gives me the creeps. It watches you.

    Kubrick is one of the great directors because he's tough and fair. Soft directors end up with the crew shooting the film, a tough director strives for what he has in mind. Tough directors tend to attract the tougher crew who understand who's boss on set.

    • @angelcitystudio
      @angelcitystudio 2 місяці тому

      Being a tough director does not make it ok to abuse women on the set. If you cant inspire your cast to deliver a brilliant performance without terrorizing them, then you are not a good director.

    • @leokimvideo
      @leokimvideo 2 місяці тому

      @@angelcitystudio Don't forget men getting abused, it's not just woman. I've witnessed huge screaming matches between men on film sets and that's considered normal

    • @kungen9164
      @kungen9164 2 місяці тому

      @@leokimvideo Sounds like a very productive and healthy way to go about producing a film. Just because it's considered normal does not justify it. The Shining is a masterpiece of a movie, and Kubrick is a genius of a director, yet it doesn't justify being an asshole. Martin Scorsese is proof of a director who can be direct in giving feedback and critique, yet one who cooporates with the actors and allows them to experiment with their characters, making a movie is process involving a lot of people, not just the director, being selfish is not conducive to anything.

    • @leokimvideo
      @leokimvideo 2 місяці тому

      @@kungen9164 You need to work on Hollywood films to get a understanding of how much is at stake when in production. A weak director will only ever produce a rubbish product. Tom Cruise gets results because he doesn't mess around, he yells when he has to to pull everyone into line. Sadly when your all nice to the crew the assholes end up shooting the film. Film sets and film production is not an environment for anyone who can't be told whats to do and how it has to be done correctly. It's very much like the military. Nothing good gets achieved when everyone is kissing each others ass.

    • @kungen9164
      @kungen9164 2 місяці тому

      @@leokimvideo You're oversimplifying the point I was making, it's not about being soft and a kiss-ass, but rather *not* having to be an asshole and treat your actors like shit. Would you for instance consider Martin Scorsece a "weak" director just because he doesn't hurl insults and yell at the people on set?

  • @UShistorymatters

    Fascinating footage. Watched the movie again recently on BBC 2. Kubrick's films were always cinematic, wish id been old enough to see this one at the cinema. Think they shot most of the movie in England at Elstree Studios. The set for the interior of the hotel must have been huge.

    As far as i know, The Shining's shooting was absolutely terrifying especially, for Shelley Duvall, who Kubrick tortured to get a good performance over the entire filming. However, now it's different as we have social media, it's hard to unfake chemistry with someone's knowledge on a set, so probably Stanley Kubrick would be cancelled today.

    I am surprised that you didn't get tons of more views. I enjoyed the presentation, but I have one contradiction. When I looked up "Executive Producer" on the Producer's Guild website, it was basically defined as a producer who manages other producers. Whatever the definition truly is, your concept is one that some people should hear. As for film festivals, there is one semi-huge one that asked me for a movie. I said that the movie was too bizarre for that event. The rep told me that it doesn't matter. He said I hired an actress who is guaranteed to sell out the theater. He also confided that the fees from the submissions pay the overhead of the event. I was so disgusted by the fakery that I declined. Call the thing what it is. Ha ha.

    • @FilmPunk
      @FilmPunk 7 місяців тому

      Yeah I agree EPs are in charge of producers. But they can also be Funders. It gets murky fast. PS Love your films, didn't know you were following me. For festivals I think 99% are pointless vanity projects. The 1% that matter are corrupt as hell with studios BUYING nominations (it's not even secret.) Also a lot of the (very few selections) are picked long before they announce it, friends of friends etc etc. Not worth the entrance fee. PPS You and a bizarre film? Surely not 🙂
