👗 *Shaytan may not physically uncover your beauty, but he influences you to beautify your cover. Please disregard such “modest” tutorials and instead learn how to cover yourself appropriately by referring to the Qur’an and Hadith:* 1. Reflect on Quranic Guidance: The Qur’an mentions khumur (24:31), referring to a long head covering akin to a veil, and jalabibihina (33:59), which refers to a loose outer garment similar to a jilbab. The Qur’an advises women not to expose their adornments (24:31). The Arabic term zeenatahunna translates to “adornment” and includes both natural beauty (such as hair and body shape) and other embellishments (perfume, clothing, jewelry, etc.). Avoid trying to look appealing with makeup, long painted nails, high heels, tight or short scarves that do not cover the chest properly, short, thin or tight sleeves, belts that accentuate the waist, bright colors, pants, and jewelry. Islamic attire has two main purposes: “O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their jalabib (outer garments). That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.” (33:59) This verse highlights that wearing the jalabib helps Muslim women be recognized as Muslims, ensuring their identity is clear and that they are treated with respect, which serves as a means of protection and upholding their dignity. If in doubt, consult the Tafsir or the Qur’an. 2. Understand the Hadith Guidelines: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “There are two types of the people of Hell that I have not seen: people with whips like the tails of oxen with which they beat the people, and women who are clothed yet naked, swaying and making others inclined to them; their heads are like the humps of camels, leaning to one side. They will not enter Paradise nor smell its fragrance, even though its fragrance can be detected from such-and-such a distance” (Sahih Muslim, Book 37, Hadith 2128). This refers to women who wear clothing that outlines their bodies or is transparent, effectively making them “clothed yet naked.” The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also said, “Any woman who applies perfume then passes by people so that they can smell her fragrance, then she is an adulteress” (Sunan an-Nasa’i, Book 48, Hadith 31). This emphasizes the importance of avoiding attention through scent, an essential part of maintaining modesty. 3. Learn About Haya (Modesty) and Body Movements: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Faith consists of more than sixty branches, and haya is a part of faith.” (Sahih Muslim, Book 1, Hadith 56) “Every religion has its distinct characteristic, and the distinct characteristic of Islam is haya.” (Sunan Ibn Majah, Book 37, Hadith 4181) “The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was more modest than a veiled virgin girl in her private room. And if he saw something he disliked, we would recognize it on his face.” (Sahih Bukhari, Book 73, Hadith 139) These Hadiths underscores that modesty is not just an aspect of personal conduct but an integral part of one’s faith. It highlights that modesty is the defining feature of a Muslim’s character, setting them apart and serving as a form of protection and dignity. Modesty is not only in one’s attire but also in one’s demeanor and reactions. Be mindful of your body movements in public and the pitch of your voice. Your behavior and speech should reflect modesty and respect. The Qur’an advises against beautifying one’s voice, as it may attract unnecessary attention. Surah Al-Ahzab (33:32) states: “O wives of the Prophet, you are not like anyone among women. If you fear Allah, then do not be soft in speech [to non-mahram men], lest he in whose heart is disease should covet, but speak with appropriate speech.” This principle extends to the general behavior and demeanor of Muslim women because of Haya. 4. Avoid Adapting Non-Islamic Clothing: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever imitates a people is one of them.” (Sunan Abu Dawood, Book 32, Hadith 4020) “Be different from the polytheists: let your beards grow and trim your mustaches.” (Sahih Bukhari, Book 72, Hadith 781) These Hadiths highlights the importance of avoiding imitation of non-Muslims, reinforcing the idea that Muslims should maintain a unique identity in their dress and behavior. The Hadith indicates that adopting non-Islamic styles can blur the lines between Muslim and non-Muslim identities. It is not suitable to modify non-Islamic clothing to align with Islamic standards, not only it doesn’t work most of the time and ultimately gives you more work but also influences you to keep looking more and more like the kafirun. Wearing traditional Islamic clothing upholds these principles and helps reinforce our identity and commitment to our beliefs. 5. Consider Your Intentions (Niyyah): The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Actions are [judged] by intentions, and every person will be rewarded according to their intention. So whoever emigrated for Allah and His Messenger, his emigration will be for Allah and His Messenger; and whoever emigrated for worldly benefits or for a woman to marry, his emigration will be for what he emigrated for.” (Sahih Bukhari, Book 1, Hadith 1 and Sahih Muslim, Book 33, Hadith 4517) This Hadith is one of the most significant in Islamic teachings, highlighting that the outcome of an action is based on the intention behind it, and individuals will be rewarded or held accountable accordingly. In Islam, niyyah (intention) is a fundamental principle. It is what distinguishes an act of worship from a mere physical act. The sincerity of intention determines whether an action is accepted or rejected by Allah. So, reflect on who you are beautifying yourself for. Are you doing this for Allah or for Abdullah? If your purpose is to please people, your way of dressing may resemble that of those who do not follow Islamic teachings. 6. Understanding the Term “Hijab”: The term hijab (33:53) in its original Qur’anic context refers to a physical barrier or curtain specifically for the wives of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Today, the word hijab is commonly used to describe the headscarf worn by Muslim women. Misusing terms or assigning them new meanings in Islam is considered bid’ah (innovation) and should be avoided. The correct terms are khumur (24:31), a long head covering, and jalabibihina (33:59), which refers to a loose outer garment like the jilbab. Final Reminder: Dear sisters, this is a call to action: start wearing the jilbab and a long veil. This is a sincere Islamic reminder-do not ignore it. Remember, you will be resurrected as you lived, and you do not want to face shame before Allah. Let modest and appropriate clothing empower you and draw you closer to Allah and the true essence of Islam.
