Anomalous pressures could lead to blowouts. The dangers of wildcat drilling.
Переглядів 230День тому
Anomalous pressures while drilling a well can cause well control issues and ultimately lead to a blowout at the drilling rig. In this short video we hope to explain why anomalously high pressure (also known as overpressure) occurs naturally. In encountering a long hydrocarbon column can lead to much higher pressures than are normally experienced at such shallow depths. The drilling community un...

A single oilfield capable of producing more oil than the entire UK - and you've never heard of it!

Whilst successive UK governments seem laser-focused (sic) on ruining the remaining UK oil and gas production in the North Sea and West of Britain. The UK still have huge demand for oil and gas - and this will mean importing. All imported oil has higher carbon emissions due to the transportation overhead. We argue it's far better to produce indigenous oil and gas, particularly where there is exi...

      Excellent presentation, many thanks for sending it to us. A quick 100mph peak at the slides suggests there is a trend of discoveries which is being followed. I'm a fan of "trendology"! Looking at the complexity of the geology it is clear every exploratory well in this overthrust play has an element of "wildcatting" about it. Not sure where I would draw the line between wildcatting and an established play trend. Good luck to Parex in drilling up these plays. We have recently completed a major update to our TROVE Colombia database and we have analogues from other thrust plays around the globe. I think there will need to be a few penetrations before we understand what's happening in this region. Good luck!

      Too kind Colin. Many thanks. This is a subject I really think needs to be well understood. Obviously the drillers, geoscientists et al know this well - but it helps non-technical folk in the O&G industry to understand why there is so much cost and planning required when venturing into wildcat areas.

      In the ideal world I believe all should be able to participate in a licence round without prejudice Peter. Where a nation wants to see their economy boosted, they will require a large capital injection and technologies from across the spectrum. When it comes to hand cleanliness - perhaps there is good and bad everywhere.

      Low hanging fruit first. The operational environment in the Paddavisse basin area is very challenging. if the resource size is big enough there are opportunities for the future. With the huge gas reserves in Mozambique & Tanzania (as well as Namibia) there are lots of options for South Africa, including LNG.

      Personally, I am not paranoid about the carbon emissions issues - but many politicians (and therefore regulators) are. And the general public are scared, confused or both. We are considering doing a number of videos looking at the climate change debate. As geologists we have some knowledge of 4,600 million years of climate evolution, not just the last century as is the myopic focus of so many. One thing is for sure, we need to understand the science and not be swayed by the emotions in this very heated (sic) debate. Watch this space......

    GOR in 1900~1930 goes from low of 200 to 500 scf/bbl, all too high for the shallow 1,000ft depth to be dissolved, so there are lots of gas in the gas top that is producing. So, they must have depleted the reservoir pressure earlier by drilling to the gas top part. They should have drilled deeper to the oil ring to get most oil out first.

      @TROVE-1stSubsurface a lot of the majors are looking at things like carbon sequestration, for example. Some of those sort of bids might be to comply with agreements with government regulators maybe. Or another possibility may be that there is a plan to build some fixed infrastructure (as opposed to floating). Been a lot of wells drilled on the shelf in Guyana with limited success.

    Mike - in a situation where you have polarity change which you illustrated (i,e. hard kick for water, sift kick for oil) good idea to create a cosine phase attribute volume (this gets rid of the polarity flip) pick on that and do amplitude/attribute analysis n the reflectivity volumes. I used this this on Everest Forties gas field which also has a polarity flip

    Going to the global south. What is happening in South Africa with CNR Int. and Totalenergies withdrawing from its Block 11b/12b gas condensate discovery that SA was planning to use?

    • @TROVE-1stSubsurface
      @TROVE-1stSubsurface Місяць тому

      I can understand this might not be CNR's bag. Frontier exploration isn't really their core business. They were early pioneers in the Outeniqua Basin and farmed out to TotalEnergies. Now, the latter withdrawing - am awaiting confirmation of this - after two discoveries (Brulpadda & Leopard) and several lookalike prospects yet to be drilled suggests something is not right..... The difficult operating environment (very strong water currents, deepwater etc) may make gas finds sub-economic. Perhaps it's regulatory intransigence or lack of governmental support. Watch this space - I will see if Patrick P will give me a call to explain.....

    Unbelievable amount of oil and gas found and being found in this region. I think now we will never run out of oil and gas as we transition and use less then there will be probably plenty of oil and gas left in the ground when the dust settles. I hope Guyana's people benefit just as the Norwegian people have as Guyana is set to become the richest oil producing state per capita.

      The latest Energy Institute report (2024) shows oil & gas production and reserves continue to rise. Commodities are anomalies - when reserves fall, prices rise, reserves rise, prices fall, reserves fall. It's a roller coaster!! Imagine oil at $200/bbl - everywhere would have economic accumulations. Conversely, imagine $10/bbl - the world economy may well collapse.

    Hunt and Sunak sucked money out of the Economy with higher Energy prices and the +75% Energy windfall tax; a PONZI scheme that delivered funds via stealth and a stealth austerity for all draining liquidity from the UK Economy and by channelling funds directly to the treasury, thus enabling a reversal of the NI tax hikes that Sunak instigated. NG settlement price stayed x3 time above the spot price for over a year, this may have been in 'co-operation' with OFGEM, a price that high over 2 years could not just be down to lack of storage in the UK or a War where UK still insure Russian ships carrying NG exports. It is 100% correct that there is not a Political Party in the UK that have a workable Energy Strategy, never mind keeping the Grid in service and allowing Energy contracts based on source all will remain fixed to Gas.

      The latest BoP number £(95)B YoY before Brexit it was around £(10)B, Trade now £(200)B, invisibles have also shrunk and no longer close the gap. Farage is responsible for this he kicked the ball in motion and sat back - what is Reform going to reform the failed Brexit, are they going to fix the inherent problems Make England Great Again? Farage is a populist and still has command over many in the UK, there is no doubt despite a swing against Brexit many will still trust in Farage and there will be a impact to the results of the oncoming Election. Advice to stay away from anyone in the pay of Putin and Rupert is good advice, Farage will never take ownership of the failures of which there are many in the past and await in the future.

    would UK replace that lost oil production with EVs and nuclear to back that? to me that seems most logical and one of few options really. norway has done as much as they can to that direction. I didnt know UK produced almost as much oil as norway and yet nobody bothers to mention it... well understandable as it is nowhere near enough UK consumption.

    • @TROVE-1stSubsurface

      EVs are only a small fraction of car sales - too expensive, limited range, inconvenient to re-charge. Nuclear should be part of the future but the lead time is decades and there are limited plans being considered just now.

    Talk about shooting ourselves in the foot, oh dear the Brits Oil and Gas policy is so bizarre it just doesn't match the reality of oil and gas use for the foreseeable future. How importing oil and gas from the 4 corners of the earth is greener than producing it locally surely is a greenwash.

    • @TROVE-1stSubsurface
      @TROVE-1stSubsurface 2 місяці тому

      Not really Mr Paul. The difference between producing locally and importing from far afield is simply transportation. It takes energy to pipe, ship, tanker etc crude oil & LNG from one part of the globe to another.

      @@TROVE-1stSubsurface Mike, there has been little explanation in Russia since the 1990,s but a lot of infill drilling , field extension and enhanced oil recovery, hence reserves have kept steady despite significant production which has recovered after the late 1990s. There is also still an innate conservatism in reserves reporting There is also huge tight oil potential in the Bazhenov in western Siberia, where the identified sweet spot is 700,000 km2, literally the size of Texas, the Akhimov tight sands in western Siberia and the Domanik shale in the Volga Urals basin. In terms of conventional exploration there is my personal favourite the Lena delta in Eastern Siberia which has a similar area to the Niger Delta, as some other plays
