Meet Me In Dreamland
United States
Приєднався 3 жов 2022
For MMID's first season, we're taking a trip back in time to the early 20th century, when a new concept for entertainment hit the American pop-cultural landscape: the Amusement Park. Using Coney Island's Dreamland Park as a starting point, each video will dive into the stories behind the attractions, taking us to unexpected and fascinating places.
Won't you... Meet Me In Dreamland?
Won't you... Meet Me In Dreamland?
The AMAZING airships of Alberto Santos-Dumont
Inside of a faux Japanese pagoda in the Dreamland Park on Coney Island, visitors would find a unique airship on display: the Santos-Dumont No. 9. But who was Alberto Santod-Dumont? Did he, and not those poseurs the Wright Bros., actually fly the first heavier-than-air craft? And how did he influence the transition from pocket watches to wrist watches?

Forced to eat dog for colonialism: the story of the Coney Island Igorrote.

After the Spanish-American War, the United States had an image problem. The scrappy anti-imperialist upstart had suddenly acquired several formerly Spanish territories, including Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines. How best to sell this sudden move toward American Empire? How about gather a bunch of tribes people from the islands and put them on display to prove how "uncivilized" they were ...

In 1908, two girls were born joined together at the base of their spine. Their story was, by turns, tragic, dark and finally uplifting. Check out Carmen and Lupitas channel: @CarmenandLupita Full length documentary on Hilton Sisters: Bound by Flesh: www.imdb.com/title/tt2357003/
Barnum's first exhibition: The tragic story of Joice Heth
Переглядів 6729 місяців тому
The Greatest Showman? Maybe, but P.T. Barnum was also a complicated figure with some very questionable deeds in his past. This episode takes a look at his first exhibition, an enslaved woman named Joice Heth, and Barnum's own claims of exploitation and abuse. How does this figure in to Dreamland's history? Well, it just does, okay! Special thanks to @bradslabs for providing the voice of Barnum!...
Was Rough Riders the DEADLIEST roller coaster ever?
Переглядів 76811 місяців тому
According to wikipedia and multiple other sources, the Rough Riders roller coaster on Coney Island's Bowery was the deadliest coaster in history. But did it really kill 7 people in two separate incidents between 1907 and 1915? And honestly, why do I care? I try to answer both questions!

Coney Island's Game-Changing Dark Ride
Переглядів 1,7 тис.Рік тому
Could it be that humans first set foot on the moon in 1901? Well, no, but that was the year a cutting-edge amusement park dark ride premiered at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. It was such a success that its owners built an entire Coney Island theme park around it, Luna Park. You can still see its influence to the present day in rides like Rise of the Resistance and Avatar: Fl...

you should do one on the "Cannon Coaster". THAT was a nightmare.
Thank you for covering the Cyclone. Brooklyn born/Native NYer here. I’ve rode it several times as a kid.
It's a great coaster! And I have every reason to believe it will be running again ASAP.
"The Wright Brothers obviously flew first" ???? The magic that is impossible to repeat? There is no scientific proof that they flew in 1903. The Wright brothers only appeared in public with their plane in 1908 and Dummont's Deimoselle (which looks more like modern planes) appeared a year earlier, in 1907. The dates mentioned in the video are comfortably wrong, but a quick Google search resolves this mistake.
Jim Rose, famous self-identified "freak" whose troupe of freaks were famous is also worth a look. ua-cam.com/video/DiclO5DQMcw/v-deo.html Sideshow cultures gave outsiders a place they could be themselves. That should not be underestimated.
I love your videos!! Always so informative and interesting. I cant imagine how strange it would be to see an aircraft flying down in the middle of the street!!
Thanks so much for watching!
Great video!
Im occasionally a bit nervous on modern roller coasters, but of course they're much, much safer than early 1900s coasters! Thank you so much for making these videos!
You were definitely taking your life in your hands back then.
I loved this video! So sad, but also hopeful in a way. Thank you for making these!
Thanks for watching! I keep finding these tragic stories... The next one will be more hopeful!
Eating dog is abhorrent to me but I was brought up in a society where food was abundant and dogs were traditionally seen as household pets. I understand that it would be different for other societies. I'm always sad when I travel and see so many homeless dogs in a society that doesn't value dogs as household pets. Generally, that feeling towards dogs and cats has created a desire/need for government-run shelters to feed and shelter homeless pets awaiting permanent homes. Not every society sees this as necessary. But, for an American society to put human beings on display only to look down upon them as "zoo" animals, it's not that much harder to imagine them being forced to eat dogs. This further associates them as being sub-human and only worthy of our disgust. I'm glad we don't do this in America...at least so blatantly. Now, it's much more subtle.
You would have loved the African exhibit at the Taipei zoo up until the 1980s
That sounds... terrible?
Hahaha sounds very malicipus. In china there was some government restaurants run by the pla that had a gun range in them that allowed you to shoot guns and then shoot whatever animal you want, badger, fox, dogs, marmots parrots ect.. In north korea there is one too.. So an african zoon in taiwan doesn't seem odd
🐕 taste good tho, tried one in Vietnam. They love to troll the yanks as well. 😂
Heh, but we can agree, at least, that dog is a *sometimes* food.
@@meetmeindreamland not in Vietnam, it's a staple. They have 🐱 soup too for cold weather. 😂
please stop saying birmingham like that
Fair.
Great video! The scene with the lawyer was particularly moving. Two fascinating lives.

Aint no place like home - coney island
Nice to hear from someone who experienced the neighborhood in person. That was unexpected. Great find.
Yeah, kind of an experiment in terms of format. Tiana's awesome, and her family moved there in the 50s, so I might be chatting with the elder Camachos later on.
oh yeah. That vomiting Animatronic in front of the GhostHole ride next to the PolarExpress. They updated it so it would squirt water from behind its butt into the glass. It was wild. I remember the Killer Rat, i remember how disappointed i was and seeing how peaceful the creature was, i knew it wasn't a giant rat but i didn't know what a capybara was either. I don't remember the two-headed baby but i remember those stalls, i remember seeing the headless woman which as a child i knew i was being duped. What would i want for the future of Coney? It would be impossible but i would like to see some of the rides back such as the BreakDance, Dante'sInferno, the PirateShip, Jumbo Jet, Polar Express, GhostHole, Original Thunderbolt and Tornado, Parachute Ride, The original Spook-a-rama track that went on way too long. And of course, The original three parks in its entirety (Dreamland/Luna/Steeple). I miss the mom and dad owned carnival game/rides, i really miss those Horse Derby carnival games, they're all gone. Gez, i miss late mid 90's Astroland. New Coney is way too Cookie Cutter and clean, and way expensive. It feels too corporate. Miss it when it was individual family owned. Sorry for the big reply but Coney Island was a very special place in my heart.
Oh man, they weren't content with just vomiting, huh? Well, that's innovation, I guess.
It's definitely a special place. Iconic even.
Hi! Can you share how you found these amazing photographs? My great grandmother worked with Jack Bonavita in Coney Island. I have a small low res photograph of her with the lion. Would love to see if I can find a better one. Thanks
Sure! Shoot me an email at meetmeindreamland76@gmail.com
Ok, and?
Fair question. This is an excerpt from a longer video and I thought I'd experiment with pulling a short from it. If you wouldn't mind giving some more feedback, what more would you like to see from this short?
Great program!
There are a number of small channels starting up with stories like this, using AI voices. It is such a pleasure to have a real presenter with talent, personality and using his own voice. Good work!
Thanks so much! I can't stand AI voices, so don't expect that any soon.
Thank you!!!💖💖💖
Mayer Meyers, Humbert Humbert. Nominative determinism? Nabokov surely knew their story.
Nabokov knew everything.
I grew up in Bridgeport, CT where the P.T.Barnum Museum is located. Both Barnum and Tom Thumb were buried in Mountain Grove Cemetery near where we lived. It was exciting to find their gravesites. I subscribed and liked your work. Thanks for the memories.
Thanks for subscribing! I'd love to check out the Barnum museum someday.
Glad I found your presentation of their lives because I never heard of them before. I will not watch anyone else's video on them. Wishing you the very best.
Thanks!
great video - thanks for giving us the story in such an uplifting way!
And thank you for watching!
Great video! I have never heard of the Hilton Sisters before, you handled their story tactfully. Wonderful job!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you for this story! They really did overcome so much, two truly fearless and strong women.
Thank you!
This was a fabulous video! I really enjoyed your work with the P.T. Barnum video to the point where I purchased his autobiography myself (though, with the language of the 1850s, i find it hard to stay focused and read through it). I really appreciate the care and empathy you seemed to handle the Hilton sisters stories with and I appreciate you highlighting other creators and people with the same condition. I'm excited to see more of your future work! Thank you for all that you do :)
I really appreciate that. Thank you so much!
Thank you for this great video!!
Heh, thanks for bearing with the sound issues :)
I'm watching...and enjoying
Thanks, Roland!
My family have been riders on The Cyclone since 1930. We still ride it to this day. Love ya Cyclone.
I'm going up this summer!
Any chance of an episode about the Dreamland fire itself?
YES. But not sure when.
Extant points for the fly buzzing around in the background.
Greetings from the UA-cam algorithm!
Great video man 👍 Looking forward to more from you! Your intro is significantly louder than the commentary portion of the video, but that's the only criticism i have. Keep it up:)
Thanks! And good point about the intro music. I thought I'd fixed it but obviously not.
Great video my man
Thanks!
I'm slowly trying to learn more about the history of circuses and I'm so happy you popped up as a suggested video!! :)
I'm so glad you stopped by! If you're interested in circus related subjects, check out the video called "Sewer Lions and One-Armed Trainers." It's about the early history of animal acts in circuses and amusement parks.
Man, the guy who did voiceovers for PT Barnum; I just can't stand his voice - lol. Thanks again for having me and I'm glad I could be of some help! I'm morbidly anxious of all of the upcoming videos of him.
Ah, I think he did a great job. Thanks for the assistance. And I don't think I'll be covering Barnum for a bit. The next few videos will probably mention him, but nothing to in depth on the man himself.
@@meetmeindreamland well thank you and I’m happy to help again! The other half of Brad’s labs was telling me about Jumbo.
I’m not going on Wooden Roller Coaster 1. It isn’t safe!
Great job I wish there was a another Steeplechase
I love Donald Trump
I could swear that a Midget is a diffrent kind of small person than a person with dwarfism?
So, it was never a medical term, but PT Barnum and others used the word to mean a person with hormonal dwarfism, which results in an overall more proportionate body than achondroplasia dwarfism, in which the limbs are smaller but the head and body are larger.
@meetmeindreamland Yes that's what I learned way back in the 80's growing up. My confusion was that it seemed to be implied as medical terminology to explain the diffrence. Thanks for clearing up the terms for me.
