Our DIY Farm

Welcome to Our DIY farm from scratch! We are creating a small, sustainable, organic farm - but we have no experience farming.
We are interested in growing fruit trees and vegetables, sustainable farming, farm to fork, permaculture, things for healthy living. We also like building things, fixing anything mechanical, animals, and country life.
This is a very long project (10 years maybe?), not sure exactly what direction things are going to go but we will try and put up our successes and mistakes so you can learn, too. It's a vlog video journal of our experiences.
If you like the idea of a DIY farm we hope that our experience will inspire you to create your own DIY Farm from scratch.

Pallets rock, and DIY Farm needs tool storage! Watch how we built this tool organizer from discarded wooden pallets... And it's portable, too. You can change the design to fit against a garage wall, along side your house, etc. Pallets can be found a lot of places, and many places will give them to you free of charge. Dance moves are not copyrighted. Feel free to steal them for yourself. Dancing...

Almost the end of Spring, the trees better get planted or else: it's a long winter in a plastic bucket. We get past the problems of the post hole digger and get the first round planted, 20 trees. Crunch time - we have to get our trees in the ground. the Summer heat is here and baking our soil like cement. Get them in this week - or wait another year to plant... A critical part of planting is being able to drill a hole in the soil with our new post hole digger, we bought a Model 110 and have a 24" bit. Thanks for watching....!

Probably the most important thing when planting trees is the soil preparation... Here is step one for us in getting ready to plant our first 49 fruit and citrus. We have to cut the grass, and rip up the surface soil. It went pretty well, we are really lucky to have such a friendly and talented neighbor with a nice New Holland and flail mower attachment. Time to plant before it gets too hot. We travel to a local nursery for our first tree purchase! We would like a variety of trees that bloom at different times of the year. Ultimately we would like our trees to be 12 to 15 feet tall. Also, they need to be suited for our soil profile. All right cool! Our 20 foot container arrived. Is it in the right spot?? We're placing a 20 foot sea shipping container on the property to keep our stuff in. We can't afford to build a barn (yet!) but this is a nice semi-temporary alternative. Secure and waterproof, two important country requirements. Every farm needs a good tractor! Hers came today and I can’t keep her off it… It’s ok to borrow a neighbors equipment once in a while, but you really need to have your own tractor. We’re a little nervous because we have never owned one before - but it’s awesome! Digging, grading, scraping, ripping… Kubota power making it happen.
