Lessons Learned, Part 2 by Kurt Hoffman, performed by Choral Chameleon
Recorded June 28, 2024 at the Choral Chameleon recording session for their 2024 Institute program. Conducted by Vince Peterson.
Texts are by Tony Whitfield:
-----------
Stop talking.
I have not been fixed.
I have been hurt deliberately.

Slow steps towards death can be arranged.

A life filled with joy requires vigilence.
I choose to go into the darkness.
Rich people are not rich because they’re good.
I have been hurt deliberately.

Slow steps towards death can be arranged.
Stop talking.

The world as we knew it no longer exists. Next steps are not always obvious. There are always strings attached. Rewards can be misleading. Sometimes an end...

The trombone duet in 'kabóca' ('cicada') expresses the sort of portentous oratory that I imagine those monstrous bugs would declaim to each other, had they trombones to do it with. musicians: Karen Waltuch, viola; Meg Reichardt, guitar; Ian Riggs, bass; Tim Spelios, drums; J. There's a clip on UA-cam of "Ted Mack's Amateur Hour" from March 13, 1951; Wally Keller and Joe Marino do this as part of a medley; they don't do this much of the song but it might be worth a watch to compare with this version.

My mother taught this to us in the early 1950s. It was always such fun to sing, that now I'm teaching it to my grandchildren.

Ah, so nice to see and hear both of you....Kurt, I was waiting to see you do a Fred Astaire, climbing the wall with your mop...:)....And amazing to re-watch the one you did at the 'Temp, haven't watched it in years. Grubby old fuzzy video (sorry for that, I should re-output it!) but just love that song, your harmonies, and Cathy's amazing mural! And seeing so many old friends all together in a room, wow! Let's get back to that soon!

well, i was running out of time when I realized that my skylit (if ungenerously narrow) staircase could make for a great staircase number! I need to study Mr. Astaire a bit more, most of my attempts to dance with the mop turned out looking like i was riding a hobby-horse. Yes, the Temporary Museum gig memories seem bathed in the amber light of the distant past. I mean, not really, that's the thing, it seems like just yesterday, it was a lovely, clear day. My parents showed up for that gig. I guess that was, what? 2007 or 8? I think Meg's mother came as well. So much changed since then.

My aunt born in 1920 contracted polio as a toddler. Spent the rest of her life in leg braces and using crutches. She married and had a son. She never complained and was always joyful. She couldn’t dance with her legs but she always had songs for us accompanied by hand dances. I remember in the late 1950’s when her family visited us we would sit around the table and she would teach us songs and how to hand dance. One of my favorite memories is hand jiving while we all sang the 🎵doodle ly doodle ly doo🎵song. It was fun and created a life long memory ❤️
