Ep. 7 - Graeme Hand - Increasing Profitability Without Increasing Productivity
In this episode, I sit down with Graeme Hand, a certified holistic management educator and grazier with over 30 years of experience. We discuss various aspects of holistic grazing management, including the influence of grazing practices on land health, the importance of recovery periods, and the role of safe-to-fail trials in improving grazing outcomes.
Graeme shares insights on profitability versus production, the significance of litter in soil health, and the necessity of adapting grazing strategies to local conditions. The conversation emphasizes the need for a mindset shift in grazing management and the importance of continuous learning and adaptation.

If you’ve recently taken control over land and intend on using livestock to help you sustainably manage it, deciding on a grazing system to use can become quite overwhelming, given every 6 months a new name has been coined. Continuous grazing, cell grazing, Mob grazing, adaptive multi paddock grazing and ultra-high density non-selective grazing are just a few of the options to choose from, howe...

    Hello from America. How is holistic management catching on in Australia? Any commercial adoptation? America's federal gov't is still subsidizing unprofitable crop farmers, and fertilizer prices have ballooned every price downstream from them over the past few years.

    How would you recommend someone get the necessary skills/knowledge/experience to be able to start their own grazing operation? I'm 40, body is a little run down, and never farmed before but know it's what I want to do with the rest of my life now I'm retired from the army. I just want to get on with it and start learning what I need. Put it off for too many years. Cheers

      Hey Jay! The first thing I would suggest is to pay down all the ignorance debt on the things that you dont know you dont know about grazing. To do this I would suggest working for an operation that aligns closely with the type of farm you want to start, even if its just for 1 or 2 years. Whilst doing this you could start reading and watching educational videos about how to manage land, livestock and market your end product. Loved the video, subscribed. Im trying to do my own on Uruguay. Can you help me understand how is water running on demand through that pipe? Does it comes off the creek to a tank and then with a bomb that starts when it feels lower pressure? Thanks

      Hey! Yes so there's a submersible pressure pump that goes down into a creek, when it senses the pressure drops then the motor kicks in.

    burnings a tool,,,, but 6 to one half dozen to another. good video, I trample every time, will slash if needed. more worm food is never bad,,,,,call the neighbours cows if really needed. in fact if the grass is gone over and all brown fiber, its usually full of seed heads,,,,I dont want to burn that seed.

    Cameron Good presentation. It’s good to hear that you consider all options rather than get caught up in the regen play book. There is a lot to learn from regen agriculture as well as other systems. . I think we all need to be flexible and ready to consider issues in front of us with the range of potential solutions.

    When do you consider pugging up the paddocks a bit to become counter productive? Never on a clay soil?

    • @camerongriffin3860
      @camerongriffin3860 3 місяці тому

      From what I've observed heavy pugging has had negative impacts, I've found it seals the soil surface like concrete and is usually followed by an undesirable pioneer species.

    Excellent presentation Cameron. With total grazing you said it’s often accompanied by ultra high density. I would add that leaving stock in a paddock longer , say 3-4 days you can achieve the same result provided animals are not able to regraze regrowth. Instructors such as Dick Richardson would argue that animals do better under these less frequent moves which are more in sequence with natural behaviour. Over that number of days the bacteria in the rumen will adjust as the quality of forage in the paddock changes but the time period is not so long that you completely lose rumen bug diversity. I’m down in Victoria grazing mainly C3 grasses such as phalaris and low palatable C4 grasses such as couch both of which can be avoided by stock resulting in high levels of poor quality oxidised dry material than inhibit regrowth in the non growing season. In our brittle environment clearing the growth points of these plants is very important. Having both sheep and cattle together or in sequence will also help to achieve a more uniform graze. I’m also experimenting with low intensity patchwork burning to deal with clumps of oxidised lignified grasses during the winter and seeing good regrowth at the moment. Keep up the videos, they are great.

      @@Forester-qs5mf Thanks mate, definitely some great points you raise and some valid arguments from Dick. A major paradigm shift that I picked up from hearing one of his talks was the over emphasis a lot of people place on trampling carbon, makes a huge difference once you realise soil is built from the bottom up and not the other way round
