how to test manure & straw for herbicides (Grazon & Tordon 22K )
Переглядів 3,9 тис.19 годин тому
Farmers are spraying their fields with broadleaf herbicides called Grazon and Tordon 22K that contain the chemical picloram. This chemical stays active in our soils for 5 years. When an animal grazes on sprayed fields, the herbicide passes through the animal's digestive tract and into their poop. If we spread contaminated manure on our gardens or contaminated mulch in the form of straw, grass c...

Typical organic myth. Telling them to “Go organic” wouldn’t help that much since organics in the US can still use dozens if not hundreds of pesticides, herbicides and fungicides. They just can’t be synthetic chemicals but some of the “natural” ones are actually as bad or sometimes worse in the concentrations used.

The electric company came by and sprayed herbicides in our yard across our fence because there is a power pole in our yard. We caught them doing it--that is the only reason we knew it happened. We would have just wondered why everything was dying in the yard. FURIOUS!

@@ecoendeavour I made my husband drive over to them as they had already moved down the street when I realized what had just happened. They were hispanic workers and didn't speak much English. They showed my husband what they sprayed--it just said herbicide. They were just doing their job--the electric company is who I am angry with. I read that they can do this and that we can't do anything about it. I read that we should put signs on our fence that say, "do not spray." Everything where they sprayed died. We even found a turtle that has lived in our yard for years dead. I read that if they eat the grass with herbicide it will kill them. I was really stressed about my chickens who free range in the back yard. NOT OKAY!

FYI, going organic is a waste of money and time. The air you breathe and water you drink are full of poison. The sun is poison because of how the upper atmosphere has been destroyed. The earth can only sustain 100 million people, some scientists say 1 billion, so at 7.8 billion and counting we only have 100 years left. That's why the rich people are investing in scientific research to leave. Enjoy what time you have, because you're not going to be able to save the planet. Any feelings that are hurt, i apologize, reality is a real slap in the face. As always, just my opinion of course.

I've been telling fellow gardeners about grazon, but none listened. I found out about it the hard way a few years ago, and that crap destroyed everything I was growing. And if you ask the feed store or wherever you get, they don't know. I'm in a rural area and found a farmer that has natural hay, the grazing cows are the only input. It's beautiful in rural N Fl. lots of super green pastures with black Angus.

My local feed store also couldn't tell me if the straw I bought was organic or sprayed and they laughed at me when I told them about grazon. I'm still on the hunt for a save local supplier.

I bought some soil for raised beds this spring because I had run out of my homemade compost. Mistake! at least I only topped off 4 beds. Test even store bought soil!!! The company was "sold" and the store gave me my money back on only the bags that I had not opened. I didn't have time to dig out 4 raised beds so I put in an assortment of seeds and brassicas seamed to survive but didn't grow worth a darn . I will just toss in sunflowers this next season to see if I can pull some of the toxins out until I have enough to fill the beds with my own soil. Make sure you don't leave your manure pile near your trees, it can damage them too. Just found your channel - I hit the button and subscribed.

I fed some hay treated with Grazon to some sheep. I fed them on my garden. That summer the plants shriveled up like they got sprayed with a light dose of weedkiller. I thought I just burned them with manure some how the first year. The second year without any manure added the plants looked just about the same as year one. By the third year after almost half my garden produced healthy looking plants! By year four was 80% normal but I still could not grow green beans. Green beans seem to be the most affected by it. By the fifth year half of the great beans survived. It took six years for it to completely break down in my garden. Be very careful about the source of any organic matter.

@@ecoendeavour yeah, but first an act of learning, because by gardening you learn more about nature and, thru highs and lows, about yourself.

It's best to be safe than sorry when using outside sources of manure and mulch.

I think this is why I have been having problems for the last 4 years. I drove 100 miles to get topsoil for aquatic plants that I grow for my clients. Noticed Leaf curl and the Lotus plants were not doing so well . 35 years not having this issue it must be the topsoil I got from that company. Lotus are much more sensitive of their growing media than water lilies. Thank you for the information

Oh man, that is so frustrating. Hopefully you can get your aquatic plants back on track. I've heard of people using bioremediation to suck the toxins out of the soil by planting sunflowers or rye or mushrooms. Then dispose of the plants.

learned this the hard way this summer. Put down store bought compost on the lawn. Definitely have a middle patch that got hit hard. Leaves all curled and deformed. My only saving grace is i live in florida with a ton of rain and extremely sandy soil. 6 months later and its just now starting to give some new growth.

Be careful with reclaimed wood. It could have lead on it or other nasty chemicals.

I've tried this test with composted goat and horse manure. I planted a pepper plant in a pot filled with the compost. I never knew you could test the straw like that. That is cool. Thanks for sharing. My favorite part of the video was, "Ooo, there's an eagle." 😅

It's sad that we need to test stuff, but I guess it's better than ruining your garden. Glad you liked the eagle sighting, I almost edited that part out but it was an enjoyable part of my day so I kept it in.

Cotton fields used to be sprayed with arsenic and it stays in the soil for thousands of years. Find soil in old forests. -KJ

Oh really, I didn't know that. Although not surprised, we spray so many bad things that we shouldn't be.
