Marcus Davidson - Felefantasi (World Premiere) | Bristol Ensemble Contemporary
The world premiere of Marcus Davidson’s Felefantasi, a work inspired by the Hardingfele (the Norwegian folk fiddle). Performed live by the Bristol Ensemble at 1904 Arts Club, Bristol on 24 May 2024.
A note from the composer:
I first got to know the Hardingfele (the Norwegian folk fiddle) in 2008 when I wrote a piece called Huldrasong for Hardingfele ensemble, specially commissioned for the Hardingtonar festival, June 2008 in Norheimsund, Norway. It was performed by a large ensemble of about 30 players in 5 parts, lasting 8 minutes. It was the first time I had a chance to appreciate the unusual sound and playing techniques of the Hardingfele. I was fortunate to collaborate with well-known players, Håkon Høgemo and Benedicte Maurseth.
I moved to Norway in 2010 and began collaborating with Osterøy Spel og Dansarlag (Hardingfele ensemble), who are based on the island on the west coast of Norway where my wife grew up.
Osterøy Spel og Dansarlag won the Vestlandskappleiken (Hardingfele competition) with the Huldrasong in 2012 and was released on their CD FelaLiv of the same year.
In 2014, Osterøy Spel og Dansarlag commissioned me to write 2 pieces, Bestamorsklokka and Volvedans (Hardingfele ensemble in 4 parts) and was premiered at Ungdomshuset på Hauge, Osterøy, in November 2014.
During my work with the Hardingfele I was able to spend time with individual players and study in detail the finger positions, tuning, drone technique, melodic style and time signatures which makes Hardingfele music unique to the ear.
My intention with Felefantasi is to write a piece for string quintet, where I break down the individual elements that makes Hardingfele music so captivating and reconstruct it in a modern context. I hope to create a journey for the audience through the different sounds and emotions of Hardingfele music, promoting it in an exciting and sensitive way - music which embodies the very sound and soul of Norway, which is today my home.

Nice class, but totally eurocentric. All bowed instruments came to Europe from the african islamic mourish People. They have beem used since de 9 century in Persia and spreaded in Europe because of The Islamic Caliphates in Portugal and Spain

This is all rubbish the violin is an instrument that its origins in older instruments that were similar brought by the Arabs to Europe from the east. The rebab with turned into rebec than eventually was developed into the violin in italy.

There are some mistakes on the description of bows. The "Tartini's bows" were not "long" at all... We know from plenty of recent research, that many Italian violinist were preferring the shortest version of a baroque bow.

The instrument painted by Rafael is a lira da braccio, and they're not sympathetic strings. although they're not fingered, they are played on. Da Vinci played this instrument, he is depicted playing it. The violin did NOT evolve from the viola da gamba. He throws around and mixes up a lot of terms with myriad suppositions and lets "we can see" suffice for evidence.

I'm confused. In one part, he says that the violin only made 4 or 5 changes from Baroque to Modern violins. But then how did all the composers change it? How did Paganini get a richer sounding violin? What changes were made there? And so on for all the other composers as well.
