Does Your Kitchen Design Consider These? | 3 Flows for a More Functional Kitchen Layout
Kitchen design is about more than the kitchen triangle, especially in open concept kitchen layouts with multiple family members using the kitchen. Be sure to think about all the different "flows" in your house and create a kitchen layout based on how you live - and then incorporate the kitchen triangle to put icing on the cake (pun intended).

U just gave ur self lung cancer. Obviously im sure u used a n95 mask and goggles with a foam insert.. But u were better off using a buffer machine that swings side to side & using 3 trizact 3m sanding discs with water. There would be only mud slurry hitting the walls and not mess up ur lungs.

I used this same concrete grinder to remove my thinnest after tile removal. Underpowered!! But if you want to spend forever then at least don't use without a shop vac or dust collection system! The place I rented it from didn't have the industrial dust collection system so used my large shop vac with 2" hose. I had to frequently stop and clean/shake the air filter clean outside cuz it cakes up with dust. Yes I leveled the machine and yes it stalled constantly. It couldn't keep up, super slow progress! The rental place said it would be overkill but my experience with the grinder is it absolutely was a waste of my valuable time. I returned it after an hour, very disappointed. I had a much better experience using the demo-hammer with wide 6" blade on a angled adjustable cart. Worked way better! However I still needed to get the small remnants of left over thinnest off so will be getting a larger industrial grinder. It will be way more expensive but the job should go very quickly. Also your right about the glue/adhesive areas of the floor. The machine is worthless when you hit adhesive. For such a so called powerful industrial machine I'm not sure what it's meant for. It's basically a sander that takes way to long to try and remove 1/4" thinset. Like you I'm doing my best and just giving my honest experience. No disrespect meant. Thanks for sharing your experience. It helps us all out who are trying to save on the overall cost.

I just watched your video and everything you said is absolutely correct! I designed my kitchen six years ago and it works so well for us. We have an 8 foot island with four feet of aisle space on the two main sides. My builder looked at me like I was crazy. I told him emphatically that we needed a two butt kitchen! I also have no sink or cooktop in the island and it is across from the cooktop, the oven/microwave combo and the fridge. Cabinets are accessible from front and back and electrical outlets on either side. Trash is right there on the cooktop fridge side. We did not do space for stools as we didn’t have the room. Our home is kinda small and it is an open floor plan.

Your kitchen is beautiful. I love the stained wood cabinets! I recently completed a total kitchen remodel. I also included all three of the same features as well and couldn't agree with you more! I also included: All drawers in my island. Everything I need to set the island for a meal is located in those drawers as well as my kettles. Since 90% of what comes out of the dishwasher gets stored in the island drawers, I located the dishwasher directly across from the island so loading and unloading the dishwasher is a breeze. Just open the drawers and put everything away with ease. No more reaching over the dishwasher door to put dishes away in an upper cabinet. In addition, I was lucky to be able to keep my island appliance free. Just one big, unobstructed countertop.

Can you make/share a video of your pantry? It looks like it is pull out drawers. I’m starting the process to make my house ADA accessible for me and pull out drawers are my top request. I’m one handed with diminishing strength in my working arm, I’m unable to reach higher than chest level, and I’m having hip issues that is pending a surgery fix so bending over is difficult and really just not doable. I’d be very appreciative.

agree on the extra space if possible. agree on where to put the trash. agree having an empty counter space across from/next to refrigerator is great, keeping it empty is a skill! I have a love/hate relationship with kitchen islands. my kitchen doesn't have one and some times i wish it did but i prefer a large empty kitchen floor. so looking for a rolling cart that I can hide away when not using.

We are just finishing our kitchen remodel. A few things we added that we LOVE: 1. Huge island. We tore out a partial wall that separated the kitchen from an unused front room. Essentially doubling the size of the kitchen. Our island is 10.5 ft x 4 ft. 10.5 ft is the largest size you can get with a single slab of quartz, unless you are ok with seams. Never had an island before in my life before this. 2. Undercabinet lighting. We use it as a nightlight. They are LEDs, and on a dimmer. Makes going up/down stairs much safer. 3. Pot filler faucet behind the stove. We use this all the time. It swings out to fill our coffee pot also. I put an access panel with a shutoff valve in the wall behind the stove. It is a perimeter wall, so I had to super-insulate the PEX & brass fittings because I live in a cold climate. This coming winter will be the first test to see if it doesn't freeze. 4. 2 separate sinks. We kept the original sink against the back wall under a window, but made it a smaller prep sink. We installed a large double sink in the island. This is a game changer, because now 2 people can use a sink at the same time. 5. We also left a lot of room between the wall cabinets and the island. Nobody bumps into others. 6. The dead corner cabinet has a small 8" door. This makes the back end of that cabinet inaccessible. We put a lazy susan inside that cabinet. But it was very dark because of the small door. I put LED lights in that cabinet, and a refrigerator style push switch to turn the lights on and off when the door is open and closed. They are 120v AC lights, so no need to worry about constantly changing batteries.

My accidentally awesome feature is a difference in working surface height along the L shape. The work surface to the right of my "chopping place" is 6" lower than the chopping place. That means that I can just brush cut food from my cutting board to the right into a container that stands below it.

My grandma designed her own kitchen some seventy years ago. She deliberately designed her kitchen to ONLY be big enough for her - and she was not a big woman. You see, she didn’t like other people “kibitzing” in HER kitchen while she was cooking, so it was only big enough for one person. Just barely. It was a Galley kitchen with a “pass through” on the side next to the dining area so grandkids could grab things and take them to the table without actually coming in the kitchen. Also, the overhead cabinets above the “pass through” opened from both sides so, again, grandkids could get the plates and stuff and set the table without entering the kitchen. Even the silverware drawers could pull out from BOTH sides of the “pass-through.” Again, this enabled helpers to access stuff without getting underfoot in the kitchen. I always thought my grandma was a very clever woman!!

0:20: lots of ‘chefs’ would assail this design. They want their triangle - that is, cooking area, refrigerator, and food prep (including sink) area all within a long step of each other. I happen to like what you’ve done. It provides plenty of work space. First ‘accidental’ feature: I have five feet of galley space between my sink and my island. Agreed that it’s awesome. Second: yeah, the garbage location is great. I put mine under the sink, because that is otherwise wasted space, and there was no other rational spot in my kitchen. But if I ever move and get to design a new kitchen, then yeah. Third: did that also. But more than being a clean area across from the fridge, it also functions as a clean space across from my sink. What this does is create a “staging area” for dirty dishes that is NOT in the way of the sink/dishwasher area! Makes cleanup a breeze. There’s nothing worse than trying to clean your way through a pile of stuff. When you can select the thing you’re cleaning, clean it, then select again, it lowers the kitchen stress level.

I lived in this one custom built home in Alaska, and they went just one step further with the trash.... It was accessible from outside. And not only was the trash accessible from outside, but the insulated door was also easy access to pipes in the wall and the house water shutoff. But the best part is that I never had someone dragging stinky garbage through my kitchen and I never had to smell the garbage while I was cooking (a particular pet peeve of mine). It opened into the trash can enclosure, so it was very quickly changed and no smells were in the house. If you needed it, you could quickly spray out the can via the water tap that was to the side, by the shutoff. It was a tightly designed space, so there was never a problem with any animals or insects. A ventilation system added that vents out high through the roof would be a good addition, because it wouldn't attract animals and would ventilate it even better. But yeah, I've long ago decided that if I do a custom build, that's going to be in it.

I DO agree that having the countertop space opposite the Refer is a great idea.. we did that in our new kitchen design, as well as countertop space opposite the oven! I noticed you put your cooktop in the island side.. and we tried that out in our last house, and even with downdraft ventilation, it was still a disaster.. so, we migrated the cooktop back to the wall.. and the sink in the island.. to lessen the fumes and smells issues. We also finally moved our trash next to the sink - after nearly 27 years of having it 4 steps away!! - at the edge of the triangle. Our new kitchen actually has 2 triangles.. one for cooking, and one for prep and staging - so 2 people can work without continuously occupying the same space. We put the food and supplies into a full walk in Butler's pantry.. and out of the cooking area.. but left the fridge in between the 2 triangles. The only 2 things I differ from your ideas on: the need you have for a 5 ft. space to walk between open drawers and doors.. why not open and close as you need to - create less of an obstruction and safety issue? That.. and the truly sharp angle at the corner of your "L" would be a hazard for me. Otherwise, thanks for sharing the video, and some good thoughts..

For those who have space between the two cabinetted sides of the kitchen, I would suggest a two rolling island layout with space between the carts (or one stationary, one rolling). This would allow for some extra workspace but not the kind that turns your kitchen into a racetrack you have to run around to get to the other section of cabinets and countertop. If they roll, you can keep them together or just move the one that blocks you from your main traffic pattern for your cooking progect. If you can't change your cabinetry placement, be sure to get carts that won't block opening drawers and door, but I wouldn't go overboard with big alleys unless your family likes to cook together. The more floor, the more floor to keep clean, as well as traverse! Another consideration is usable space. We have phenomonal storage space, but a lot of it is vertical. It's now over 3 decades since we've moved here, and my climbing days are over. Keep this in mind if you're planning to live in a home into your retirement years. Cabinets past my reach are just wasted space, but the next family will hopefully make use of it; I have no intention of spending a fortune to change what's unuseful to me but also not in my way. Even so, we mostly just had things we didn't use on the top shelves. If you don't use it for years, why keep those items? I wish big drawers had been more popular when the house was built, but I've put various plastic tubs, including brand new kitty litter trays, in the lower cabinets so that I don't have to stand on my head to get to something in the back. That was probably the easiest fix for that problem. It's great to see this video and suggestions from others! There are so many kitchen layouts and sizes that hopefully we can glean what works for ours!

If the kitchen is not large enough to support an island, then if you have a one-door refrigerator (not the double doors), then having the bench space on the opening side will serve the purpose. Same goes if you have a pantry cupboard. Biggest game changer in the modern times, drawers instead of lower cabinets. If retrofitting an existing kitchen (ie not changing cabinets), you can rig up internally mounted drawers in the lower cabinets, just make sure you clear hinges etc. This one for me, biggest game changer in the universe.

IMHO, the old triangle thing is way, way outdated. It comes from the 50s or earlier. We now have cooktops, microwaves, trash compactors, dishwashers, etc. Throw out the “triangle” and work those other things into the design. My kitchen is nearly impossible to work with efficiently. The oven range is at one end and the fridge at the other with a sink in the middle. The DW is next to the sink, which is great, but the only cupboards that can accommodate the dishes is on the opposite side of the room from the sink and DW. So is the only drawer that works for the flatware. The cupboard that holds the cereal is in the fourth corner of the room. To get a bowl of cereal means to completely circumnavigate the kitchen - bowl and spoon in one corner, cereal in the next, and then the fridge for the milk. It’s insane! It was designed by a woman for a woman and it’s insane! We hired a new architect when we were thinking about remodeling, but she wasn’t any better! All she wanted to talk about was the stupid triangle! And she wanted to rip out one quarter of the storage space - cereal, dishes, etc. Putting in a pantry didn’t solve all the problems and she wanted to limit us to a “counter depth” fridge. It’s all nuts. This kitchen also has upper corner cupboards which are also stupid and waste space. I can’t get all my spices in one space that is also accessible to said spices.

These are great suggestions. My mom's house was built with a galley kitchen and I knew that had to go when I bought it. I moved a wall and made it into an open space with center "island" on wheels that sits chest-high and works great as a baking surface, staging area for groceries/ingredients or social bar/buffet area. Love it!

  • @ManuFortis
    @ManuFortis 4 місяці тому

Yeah, I basically do #3 as well, in a different way. When I move to a new location, cause I rent a lot right now, I tend to put my chest freezer next to the fridge, or 90 degrees adjacent from it somehow. If I can. If not, if there is a table or desk I can put nearby instead, or across from it, I do that. Why the chest freezer though? Aren't I opening it? Yes, but probably only once or twice at that time at most, and only so often. So it can double as a counter top to some degree for some things, without being in the way entirely either. But key thing to know as well, is that the fridge at most of the places I live at, isn't designated to a singular area alone. It's not like there is a cutout in the cupboards and counters for it. It's often standalone mode, somewhere. So it's often not a big deal if I put the desk or freezer or table I have extra of for these sorts of things, near and around the fridge. The others I sometimes live with, agree it helps when you need to do a lot of stuff in the kitchen, and need somewhere to put something, or do something, etc. And done right, it barely takes up any of the actual space that people move around in, or really matters at all.
