Welcome to GARDENING IN COLD SPRING HARBOR, a channel where I Lyuba Franco, a home gardener living in Long Island, NY( gardening zone 7a) tackle all of the struggles, teach you simple tricks/hacks as well as give you all the easy, helpful yet proven tips so you can have the home garden of your dreams!!! I am a stay at home mother to 5 beautiful children (whom you will see periodically in my gardening videos), a loving wife of over 13 years and also a passionate home gardener. It all started with my birth mother who worked at a field/plantation, followed by my grandmother who I was lucky to know until she passed away at 93 years old. As long as I can remember, she used to take me to my parents Summer house in Ukraine and taught me all the gardening techniques and tricks that I still use in my own home garden today.Thank you for visiting my channel and for watching my videos! @lyubafranco We have a ton of white horehound growing that I am pulling up, and I'm planting the flowers in places to help keep the horehound from growing back, so at least my garden area will be horehound free. We'll still have plenty of horehound left, though, so I can make horehound tea and hard candy/throat lozenges. It reseeds itself like nobody's business. May you walk in beauty always.
@@terryulmer969 I've never seem horehound before but I can't believe that you make your own throat lozenges from it. Very impressive!
I use it on cherry slug. I guess it's OK to use on hydrophobic waxy soil to help with water retention

Hello and thank you for watching my video. Im truly happy to hear that you have enjoyed the content of this video. Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
i put my kitchen waste in a large bucket that i inoculated with sauerkraut juice so it is all fermented and acidic. i neutralize it with wood ash before applying it to soil. this way i can compost my kitchen waste without any smell in a bucket and add it to the garden to provide organic matter plus add wood ash to provide nutrients without changing the ph of the soil. i dug a small trench and laid several shovelfuls of this stuff in it, it was gone after a month, even though we barely had any rain, only crumbly black material left, could only find some corn skins that i could recognize. i guess the lactobacillus has predigested the organic matter so the soil bacteria had a easy job. it was also very moist when applied as i keep it mostly under water in the bucket.

Remember the good ol' days when the Christmas stuff wasn't put out until the day after Thanksgiving?
Yep, in fact that was the first thing that I thought when I walked into the store and saw all of the holiday merchandise. Not only do they place all of the merchandise out for sale the first week of October, they told me that they won't be restocking any items. Once an item sells out, that's it!
I’ve worked retail for the past 16 years and it’s pretty much been the same every year. Halloween starts coming out in august and Christmas starts coming in September. But every year people say it’s earlier and earlier. The only thing that has moved up earlier is the Black Friday “deals.”
@rynepowers4508 I grew up in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Back then, the Christmas stuff was never put out until the day after Thanksgiving. It was something we looked forward to. For decorations, the big stores put up a lot of automatons. They were awesome.
@@terryulmer969 Yea, these days big box stores choose to "run ahead of the train". To them money and profit top any customer service. It's pretty sad.

What do you do if the die back or canker is on the bud union/graft point on the rose? Is there any hope in saving it?
Hello and thank you for watching my video. Dieback can occur on either smaller branches or on the main stem towards the graft. The main goal is to identify it promptly and cut it off in entirety. The amount you'll have to cut off will depend not only on the location of the dieback but also on how much dieback has already occured hence the impact on the plant. There is always hope when it comes to saving a plant, you might have to prune it more aggressively vs not removing the damage and waiting for your plant to die. Be well and Happy Gardening!!!

Hello my fellow home gardener and thank you for watching my video. I truly appreciate your positive feedback. Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
What is the name of the magenta colored shrub rose in the beginning of the video? It is beautiful!
There's some really great information here. Love the video. I live in zone 5a in Wyoming and with my roses, through trial and error, i've noticed that planting the rose too shallow the rose won't survive the winter. As far as I know, all roses are grafted and the graph union has to be buried at least 4 ro 6 inches below ground level. You pretty much have to bury half the rose. Protecting the canes from the desiccating winter winds we have here with tree leaves helps immensely. I use chicken wire to put around the rose. And then I fill it up with tree leaves for winter. This works well with tree peony too. Otherwise, it'll be forced to grow herbaceously. And may not survive.
Hello and thank you for watching my video. I appreciate your comment and positive feedback! In colder gardening zones, roses do need additional protection during the winter months in a form of either mulching ( like you said using tree leaves)or even covering the entire plant with frost protection cloth. It's also very important to correctly prune the roses. Many wait until the air temps are too cold to prune; hence causing the cells inside the canes to freeze essentially causing dieback of the branches and eventually of the entire plant. Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
Thank you for informations, I planted 4 Roses, 3 are alive while fourth is dead, no inside part of it is green at all. I don't know why that happened. After all green branches died one started appearing but it soon died too.
Hello and thank you for watching my video. Im sorry to hear that one of your newly planted roses didn't make it. There are a lot of factors which could have contributed to the death of the plant. Each plant goes through transplant shock differently. If the plant is extremely stressed out it could experience dieback. Not all rose varieties are the same. Some are more disease reluctant, less prone to stress and are more cold hardy. The location is also crucial as roses need at least 6+ hours of bright direct sunlight daily. The condition of the soil; how well draining it, ph of the soil as well as nutrient composition are also very important factors. When planting a rose, it's important to calculate the correct planting depth. Depending on where you live and how cold it is during winter months you might have to plant the rootball deeper without exposing the graft. I hope that the remaining 3 roses will do well in your home garden! Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
