Thank you for the report 👍
The algae bloom on Mendota is brutal
Yeah, it can pop up quickly! Warner Bay was nasty yesterday. Monona was pleasantly fishable on Saturday, went back Sunday and it was getting pretty gross with Blue Green Algae forming in spots.
Thank you for the report! Can you give me some advice and point me in a good direction to catch some yellow bass? 👍
The best Yellow Bass action I know about right now is on Crystal Lake near Lodi hope that helps. Good luck!
I used to use beadhead flies for icefishing that i tied up with different glow in the dark wrap and little tiny tails
As of this past Wednesday on Wabesa, the crappies we caught still had eggs.
Interesting...yeah the spawn definitely doesn't happen all at once!
These are awesome. Makes me want to travel up to fish the WI river! Thanks for recording these!
Fished for cats with 5 other boats in our group. Slowest bite we ever had and we have been coming up for 4 years. Ended up with monster bluegills, crappie, pike, walleye, rock bass and SMB trolling. Has a blast heading back up next week.
I'm going to bed early and waking up at midnight to go fishing, hopefully it doesn't rain for a day. It's like 2:25 pm and I just heard thunder again.
The forecast says it should clear out by nine or so good luck!
I'm still getting some walleye night fishing from shore but that's kinda petering out and catching a lot of weeds. Can't wait until the end of June when I start catching a lot of catfish on jointed rapalas in my secret spots.
Thank you for making these reports. I listen every Friday. If you ever hear anything about carp - particularly if they’re spawning or up shallow - us bow fishermen would really appreciate if you included that in the report. :)
I have seen a lot of carp swimming around by the shore on Monona after dark. That was a week ago I don't know what they are doing right now. I saw one bow hunting boat out on Mendota the other night near downtown but I didn't see them shooting.
Mother's day, I saw a bunch of them splashing around shallow near the canoe launch in the Cherokee Marsh. You're doing God's work.
Thanks for the info again yall! Getting out today!
1:19:46 I disagree. I beat meat basically every day. Thank you for the seminar, it was great.
This is a fantastic session. Would’ve loved to make it in person, so thank you for recording it and sharing!
Thanks for posting Pat! Wasn't able to get there due to family responsibilities. Glad I'm getting to see these anyway.
Thanks for posting this Pat!
I think I give away about three big bass a year to people who I know need the meat otherwise I just throw everything back I catch around here. I have been tempted to throw channel cats in Monona when I catch them by the locks but of course I never have done it. Does anyone know why there isn't a huge population of catfish in Monona? I know the population in Mendota is getting bigger I have not caught one less than fifteen pounds for at least ten years. I mostly catch them on rapalas I don't even use bait anymore.
That door dinger constantly during the video is very annoying. Maybe you could disable it while doing this report. Thanks for doing this report though. If there is any way to support it other than shopping at your store (which I do when on the east side) you should mention it.
Thanks, for the support! Being the day before opener, it was very busy that morning so had to squeeze the report in when I could. Happened to have a lull so I went for it…then my bait guy shows up lol! So that was him in and out but had to just keep recording or the report probably wouldn’t have gotten out til after close.
I always wondered why there are not a lot of catfish in Monona? I fish there like once a year with some cutbait for twenty years and have never caught any just a few bullhead. One of my friends who has fished Madison for at least fifty years mostly for perch has caught one catfish it was a long the wall out of his boat.
A lot of people catch catfish while ice fishing and throw them in the garbage. I have not caught a catfish less than about fifteen pounds in probably ten years. I last kept a catfish at least fifteen years ago they just seem to get fattier and nasty after they get to be ten pounds. I'm gonna put tonight at the beach near where I live at and spotlighting walleye with my fishing rod left at home...should be no one fishing out in the rain.
Will the catfish population completely tank ? Is there anything we can do to preserve them ? What’s the timeline we have?
Hard to say, I guess...all I do know is that there just aren't any small Catfish coming up behind the big ones currently in the system. They won't be eliminated completely but no where near the huge hatches they experienced in the early 2000s. Efforts to improve water quality in Cherokee Marsh has helped many species but not Catfish and Carp. I guess you just never know. The Catfish could have a great spawning year and come back but know Dave said there are no plans to stock Catfish anytime soon
I'm old enough to remember when the limit on panfish was fifty per person. We'd go fishing for bluegill one time and have enough fillets for the whole year. Then someone put grass carp in our local lake to keep the weeds down. They poisoned the lake and the bluegill fishing never got back to what it used to be like forty years ago
I think I have fished one opening weekend in the 20+ years that I have lived in Madison. I usually wait until Monday.
Thanks for the info!
Thanks for the report!
Thanks for the report
Why does it say 2023 on this video
Oops! Good catch!
Thanks for the report!
Great job .. thanks for updates!
I was walking along Monona Terrace and couldn't believe how low the lake was. Hopefully we get some rain soon around here
Do you guys sell the 2024 licenses yet? Feb 28th. They aren't selling them until March 1st downtown at the DNR office.
Yeah March 1 they go on sale everywhere
Thanks!
Another good report Pat. Can't wait to get up there soon!
Thanks!
How far does one have to travel to find safe ice ?
Thanks for sharing Pat!
Last year's permit is good until March 31st 2024.
Yeah thanks the county site isn’t very clear but the City site in fact does say it’s good for 15 months
Ive been seeing a few walleyes on my nightly walk along Warner Park but havent tried any casts. Im waiting for the lake to finally ice over.
How’s the bay looking for this weekend?
Assuming you mean Monona Bay, there won’t be fishable ice this weekend but I bet folks are on it Monday or Tuesday
How do you access upper mud lake during ice fishing?
It a road right off Stoughton road. Think it's called Terminal drive I think. There is a big parking lot.
@@shanerussell7698 ahhh I was afraid you’d say that. Too far of a walk for me then.
Yes it's a walk and much better places to fish
I good info Pat! I always enjoy these. No ice on lake Onalaska yet.
Thanks Will!
I will deliver a great selection of tungsten ice jig flies on Saturday, November 25th. Selection includes: Pink Squirrels, Pink Annihilator, Glow Annihilator, Black & Blue Bruiser, The Hornet, Gold Beadhead Bluegill Killer, Black Head Bloodworm, Glow White & Chartreuse Grub. Pat should have plenty of the Original Bluegill Killer and the Green Beadhead Bluegill Killer. All of these jig flies work great in both open water and through the ice. Stop in the store and pick up a good selection of these ice jig flies.
Any idea when Gov. Island will reopen? I could not find a reference to it anywhere - I assume it's because it's not a public works project as I believe it's owned by the Mental Health institute nearby.
No idea but I'd think open soon the blacktop has been down for a week or more
Good report! Looking for a hot crappie bite! You might of saved me a trip!
There’s been a good Crappie bite coming out of the Monona Terrace wall and Crappie starting to move into the Triangles and Monona Bay
@@dsbaittackleflyshop I have fished the triangles in the spring with my old boat. I have a new ProV and worry about making it under the bridge. LOL Do you think it will clear it?
Do you ever get any reports for Fox Lake? It’s just above Beaver Dam
Very occasionally but more in the winter than anything else. Especially if it's a good Crappie year up there.
Is there a usable boat launch at Crystal lake?
Honestly not sure…it was close this summer with how dry it was but not sure since the rain we got last week
Appreciate all the information. Thank you ! Tim Nelson
Thanks for tuning in Tim!
I'm still trout fishing... I'm eating the 3 I catch
I caught one hundred bluegill in a few hours off the piers by Monona Terrace this afternoon. I was using a fly with one split shot to get it down. I kept five for catfishing and threw all the rest back.
Very helpful thank you
Thanks for listening!
