We tend when we get new hens, section a space for then with a coop. Make sure they can see your other hens through mesh. 10 days is about normal but if the hens are say 3 months old I would wait until 5 months old. When you put them in with the others move them when it's dark, place the new hens in the main coop. By the morning they will be used to the smell of the new hens. Take down the mesh where the new hens was. Let them all out of coop, the first two hours they may fight. You have to let it happen so they sort out there order. We stay in run for this period just to referee in case it gets nasty. It normally does not though. After this there will be minor chasing for a few weeks and then they will be all friends

Surely the root is out of bottom of the tube by the time the first true leaf appears? Doesn’t that concern you?

Yes the toilet roll breaks down in the soil. It works great as it does not disturb the root when planting out. Best of luck

Hi Darren. First time watching one of your videos which I thought was very interesting and not an idea I have ever seen anywhere else for starting off parsnips. I have had a lot of problems with parsnips and poor germination, a lot of which seems to stem from using older seed saved from previous years. I will give this a try once we have collected together a few toilet rolls and I will let you know how we get on. I assume once planted out the card board tube will just rot down in the ground and not have any impact on tge development of the parsnip? Trevor.

I’m surprised you haven’t planted those out yet. From my experience of your method, the tap root will be at the bottom of the tube well before the first true leaf appears. I’ve always thought that first white root mustn’t be damaged but perhaps you succeed without that concern. I’ll be interested in your thoughts.

Good job, mate. This bloke’s on the other side o’ the pond, central New York State. Stinky for sure. Have a brick handy when setting up in the bucket to keep the leaves submerged - floats like a bloody duck! I’ve seen it mingled in the mulch for potatoes, am going to try that. Once established, you’ll never get rid of it, so beware.

Astrantia I sow in autumn and I should get seedlings around spring. You can also get some success with January sowing here in the UK. They need a cold period before germination
