Cass Scenic Railroad: Winter Express January 25
January 25, 2025. Went to Cass today to capture the Winter Express run from Cass to Durbin. The temperature was in the single digits when we got there, and it was causing some problems. It aloud us to capture some moments we had never seen before. They were using hot water from the engine to melt ice off the tracks and the switches. We also captured the engine coming uncoupled from the passenger cars on the way out of Cass. Got to love Steam and Snow. It is a great combination. We made the usual captures @ Cass, Holsterman, Old Schoolhouse Curve at Nottingham, and Town of Durbin. Hope you enjoy. # #westvirginia #cassscenicrailroad #train #trainride #winterexpress #cass #winter #scenicrailway #wva #railroad #railway

A "AWD" steam locomotive. They are weird looking. But have their charm too. I swear that engineer loves that whistle! Nice video.

For this long and loud horn, the driver would get some days in jail...here in Europe.
@@ehoberg They like to blow the whistle @ Cass. Part of what makes it unique
I'll bet you could hear this at Snowshoe....
@@kleetus92 I’m sure you can
What really surprised me in this clip is how long you can hear the whistle echoing in the hills with all the leaves down. Way longer than in the summer!
@@kleetus92 Yes. It definitely has a different sound with the snow on
@Barkley512 Just like went a current day freight comes by on snow covered rail... weird sound.

@@Bill-xx2yh It is a Shay engine
@Barkley512 thank you so much.
I have C&O Employee Timetable #153 from April 1966 that instructs C&O Greenbrier Subdivision crews: (i) CASS, W. VA. - Before entering that portion of Passing Siding at Cass between the water tank and the west switch, it must be known that this portion of track is clear of scenic railroad equipment movements. Of interest is "scenic railroad" was not capitalized, nor did it mention "Cass Scenic Railroad" by name. In any event, by that late date there was seldom if ever more than one C&O train on the line at any given time, so the passing siding probably didn't see much C&O use. C&O had closed the train order office at Cass around 1965, and other than occasional hoppers of coal for the Shays, there probably wasn't any C&O business at Cass ever again. Nearly 60 years on, we can still enjoy the "scenic railroad equipment movements" even though the C&O hasn't run up that valley since December 28, 1978. Beautiful to see #5 in the snow.
@@B-and-O-Operator-Fairmont Thanks for your comment. That’s some interesting information
I think I've seen this happen in a Thomas episode...
@@steamsteelproductions 😂Definitely something I wasn’t expecting
Great video! Do they run the train up to the top of the mountain in the winter?
@@TheChristianOutdoorsman496 Thanks 🙏🏻 No they don’t run up the mountain. They only run the Greenbrier Express route along the river. Nice flat ground
@ I didn’t figure they would go up the mountain….it would be dangerous for sure.
@ Yes. That was one reason they tried to get the Greenbrier Express completed. It gives them the ability to run these winter events

@Barkley512 when I was a kid in 60's there was always a steam engine bringing in supplies for a lumber store and in the summer it would take people on dinner rides. Loved the sound and engineering!!!
@ There is something about a Steam Engine that makes you feel good 👍
@Barkley512 we used to put pennies on the track and pick up the flattened ones after it passed. The engineer would wave at us and give us a toot.

Traditional Signal for a road crossing is the Morse Code "Q". Long - Long - Short - Long. None off this Whoop-Whooping around. Traditional reilroad signals have real meaning. Seems you don't know that. All you're doing is making usless noise. 🤨
@@tmeyer2022 I agree that I am unfamiliar with traditional railroad signals and there meaning. Just a guy that likes old steam trains. Appreciate your knowledge and insight. Thanks for your comment
That's what Cass is known for though ever since the logging days, the men who know how to play a tune with the whistle. Personally, I believe that's one of the factors that makes Cass so wonderful the sound of those whistles.
