Don't Optimize Your Life (Do This Instead)
Lovely video Nick, subbed for more. This resonated hugely for me navigating my 40s and the next stage of my life
I totally relate to that constant feeling of being behind-trying to juggle everything at once while perfectionism keeps making me second-guess myself. What really helped me was switching to Amplenote. Instead of drowning in endless to-do lists, I can quickly capture ideas, prioritize what truly matters, and actually get things done without overthinking. The way it seamlessly combines note-taking with task management means I’m not just planning-I’m executing. It’s the first tool that’s actually helped me break the cycle of overwhelm and make real progress!
This was very interesting!!! I will try this next werk, because I am also always behind my tasks!! Thanks for the inspiration again!! 👍👍
So inspiring, thank you!
I am really enjoying your videos. Please keep up your channel you have great thoughts
Bring Jésus to your Life, his Love is all you need🙏
Comments to timestamps: "1. The Problem" - Are you sure not having the "perfect" planned calendar is the problem here? What if the actual problem comes from having turned all tasks into pre planed time slots, when how much time spent on each task is hard to tell? It's either going to be too much time spent or too little time spent - a lose lose scenario. I understand a deadline is a deadline, but completing the same process in a shorter time frame will leave you with the same problems along the way, just with more exhaustion added to the mix. I use Amplenote to manage my tasks and prioritization, instead of having to juggle them I can rely on the Task Score feature to do it for me. Less worry and overwhelm = more focus. "2. Week 1: Time Analysis" - Analyzing data is key. Tracking everything from workouts to sleep to hydration (2L of water per day) - it's all connected, literally. "3. Reviewing the Data" - Phone is a big one here - out of sight out of mind - (I don't know if you do this or not, but what I do is) I have nothing on my desk, except water and coffee. Every small little fidgety gadget takes some % of focus, so the less there is in view, the less distractions. If I need to capture an idea I just open Amplenote on my phone when I'm out, the app loads superfast. "4. The Plan for Week 2" - Leaving my phone somewhere behind me when working, where I can't see it, is a big one. Small adjustment, major improvement. "5. Week 2: Application" - I highly recommend meditation for improved focus, and reading "How to train your mind" - by Chris Bailey. (It's narrated by Chris Bailey too, but I'm sure Bill Bailey would do an excellent job!) - www.audible.com/pd/How-to-Train-Your-Mind-Audiobook/B08N5C3QLB
Calming video, Nick. Gladly winter should be over here in Switzerland in a month. Where do you live?
A very honest video, Nick!
Loved your video! I'm in the same kind of process right now, and struggle with recreation and resting. When we aren't asleep we always have to direct our attention somewhere, and that is a form of doing. Maybe doing and being can't be separated completely, but we can maybe do being. If that makes sense. The only "do being" I can think of is doing meditation and mindfullness; spending attention on the present moment. That is the closest thing to motionless and inacrivity I can think of.
Come to East Europe,we have that nothing that you need!
I can relate to that. I am a professional illustrator. Painting has been something I always did and once the non creative career opportunities I invested my time in turned out to be a mismatch for me, I decided to turn my hobby into my job - I definitely needed a new hobby ;) I try to keep a balance between personal work and client work as good as I can, but that's not always achievable. But for now I am happy with my decision. It has been 8 years now and I still love my job - at least most of the days.
I have new unused kitchenware stored in boxes that I can easily take out when people come over. After I wash it, I just put it back in the box.
Live simple, buy local groceries, avoid processed foods, rent your apartment, drive the cheapest smallest car, don’t get into debt, don’t buy on credit, eliminate most furniture. Drop all social media. Have one tv channel to watch news. Exercise daily. And stay single
i don’t just click SUBSCRIBE that randomly, if i do means you’re something.
The very last thing on my list of things that would get you behind would be screen-time! I feel like that itself had to be an outlier right? But no this is a fantastic video, and fun to see your "casual" side with Wifey!
👍
As an independent contractor who works from home 100% of the time, I also relate to always finishing a day behind. I got ahead at one point last year and it felt so good, but I haven't been able to do it since. Definitely gonna give it my best shot again soon though
Nick, great video! Appreciate your content as always. Few thoughts I wanted to share as I’ve put a lot of effort into this over the years. 1. When managing workload, it comes down to two things. Time management and task management. 2. For tasks, I use a task list in outlook. I make a point to be as specific as possible in the task subject so it’s clear what I need to do. I also try to be mindful to enter a task that will take anywhere from 15-50min (this is just my personal preference). The key here is to not write something ambiguous that could wind up taking 2+ hours because these are the biggest killers in putting you behind schedule in my experience. If it’s a big task, I take the time to write it out into smaller chunks before I begin working on it. 3. For time management I use outlook calendar with a time boxing strategy similar to your calendar in the video. I simply drag and drop my tasks onto my calendar to manage my time and all of my time blocks/tasks are always 50min or less. I noticed you have large blocks of time on your calendar. You may want to consider being more specific with the project/task on your calendar as I mentioned above. Being specific has helped me be more realistic with how long a project will actually take and has done wonders for my schedule. Hope this helps!

You two are so cute 🤍🤍🤍
Wow it`s pretty interesting, need to try some time-audit
This is an interesting one for me. I also am terrible at estimating how long it takes me to do something, but in the opposite direction. I get so stressed that things will take longer than they do that too many items on my list overwhelm me. I'm going to have my wife look at my schedule for the same, but different, reason.
Loved this!! Just found your channel. Looking forward to watching more.🇮🇪

Hi nick, if I had a basement that big? My husband would have to stop me buying tools! 😂😂😂 I love them! And yes, I use them. 🪜🧰🪛🔧🔨⚒️🛠️⛏️🪚🔩🔫🪓🔪🧱🙏🖐🏻✨🇬🇧
Great video. Love that❤
4:40 thats going to collapse soon
Any day now...
Great job on this.
I convince myself that working hard and long hours until I'm broken physically and mentally is getting me faster to my destination of a life when I can relax and be creative and happy. I'm 59 and I've done this time and time again. It's almost pathetic that I repeat the same mistake over and over. I reach my destination broken then create a new destination to get to where ill be happy. If I'm going to be unhappy at the end of each day then what's the point. I'm going to slow live. Stop rushing. Change my perspective before it's just too late.
Hey. You popped up in my feed, (been on a renewed decluttering mission). Apologies if this has been mentioned in other vids, but I was wondering if you have plans for the basement. Such a great space, I immediately thought of dedicating it as a games room, library, larger office space or home gym. Then I saw your tools and camera equipment and thought what it might be like to have more of a dedicated space for your tools, either on a wall pegboard or in a cabinet. Given you are renovating, it seems logical to dedicate more space and planned storage for DIY supplies. And your work gear looked quite cramped and similar in all its cases - my brain wanted labels on everything :-) For me, the kitchen and bedroom are the easiest to keep tidy and with reduced items. Beauty products and clothes have never really been a thing for me, and am definitely not a lady who is drawn to handbags, shoes or jewellery, so I don't have much stuff. BUT my arts/crafts and DIY tools and supplies do take up a fair bit of space. After many tries and some considerable frustration, I stopped being so restrictive and gave up some more space to them because they are all activities that enrich my life. As with everything, I think balance is crucial - which leads neatly into your leaning shelves - eek! Thanks for a really pleasant video, you have one more subscriber! Sending appreciation from a not so sunny England!
Balance is indeed key! Thanks so much for sharing - these are some great ideas for the basement space. Thank you

Having a few designated junk drawers helps me--they don't actually have to be /drawers/, just specific, defined places where things can land until I have the time or energy to properly deal with them. They keep any clutter from expanding into my "real" life. I think of them like inboxes, which helps me keep them small and reminds me to empty them regularly.
This is great! I used to keep an "inbox" junk drawer at my old workplace, but I'm not sure why I haven't implemented it at home yet.
I live in manhattan. Living simply, small, and intentionally in a city is an absolute blast. I don't knwo if I would call it low maintence. I get ot do a lot. But the basics of life are done in a very simple and effective way.
I watch 1 video of Nick per week to reflect. It's already the third that causes me some tears about who I am, where I am and how I can be. Amazing, Nick! (I need to learn English urgently, but luckily there is the subtitle translated by UA-cam into Portuguese!
Loved the distinction between how to manage tools for DIY home repairs vs filmmaking "tools" you need for work. I loved that it was a thoughtful distinction between where spending money for higher quality adds value or not depending on the context.
Love this video. Your tips on minimalism are spot on. I think a lot of people think it’s a lack of things, but you gain so much when you have less to worry about, less to clean and put away.
victorinox mini nail clipper! 100% recoomending that
Very inspiring! I struggle with decluttering my office because I spend so much time in it, due to being remote, that I don’t want to spend more hours there. Unfortunately, my office triples as my “library,” and the guest room of my house, so it gathers clutter quickly. I have very little storage space, and so my office is the dumping ground for all things like your basement. This has inspired me to work on it, a bit at a time.
Keep going, Nick!
Decluttering is a better feeling then buying things 😂
You must be in Minnesota or Wisconsin. 😉
You got me!
Anyone else anxious about the way that wooden shelving unit is leaning to one side?
So stressful I gasped 😅
For some inspiration on how to rest, I recommend the book "create space" by Derek Draper and "Rest, 7 ways of rest to.." by Allison Hay. Enjoy the journey!
These are great! I just put in holds at the library. Thank you!
I own around 2% of that. But I don't own a film-production company.
I'm feeling the very strong urge to get back to 2% of this. Just seasons of life man.
Wow! Really helpfull to show what reality is. I feel less alone. I have a lot of things to decluter in the next week.i am lazy as f.... But seeing what reality is in the reality of a minimalist person i follow on youtube is a bless. Thanks you for this
Just trying to keep it real over here. Good luck on your declutter.
I really like this. I have a personal ritual I call Sunday Reset that involves doing facial masks and checking in on my body. I have been thinking about expanding on that a little bit and schedule out my week ahead, but I suffer from the one thing that is such a hindrance! Not knowing what to do with myself! I have so many goals and ambitions and yet, I still don’t know what to do with myself and it’s a little infuriating. I see so many people I look up to and admire have such busy lives while I’m sitting here not knowing what to do, then that leads to doom scrolling or taking too many naps throughout the day. I’m young, 23, I get it. I’m not supposed to have everything figured out, but I’d like to have something figured out. It makes me feel stagnant, I don’t want an other stagnant year. This has been really helpful in learning how to manage my time a little better, hopefully I find something that will fill my empty days.
Thanks so much for taking the time to share! And best of luck pushing through the stagnation. You've got this!

Partially, yes.
Hi Nick. We live in a 1 br apartment, so space is a premium. Last fall, I did the Big Cleanse. Our balcony outside is our dumping ground. (Where I keep our storage bins) I got rid of most of what we had been holding on to. I do the 6 month cleanse as well. So with the bins mostly empty, I was able to move what we wanted to keep, and got rid of everything else. I tried the "selling" route as well. And I found that even if I underpriced what I was selling, and/or if the item "Cost" me a lot of money, I priced to similar or close, but for months, I kept getting the "can I have it cheaper??" requests. When I had had enough I took down my store and just donated what I was selling. We have a large immigrant community in our building, so whenever I can, I post all the "Stuff" in our common area in the basement, so that people can just browse and take what they need, I clean/fold and sort what I am getting rid of. If it does not find a home in a few days, then it gets tossed ... I have 1 tool box, and a cabinet next to my desk with my assorted essentials. Our paint is in grocery bags in the closet (which was emptied from the last purge). I finished my cleanse the other night, with the last bin going outside, with the last of my "things" I wanted to keep, but no longer wanted to look at. Books, and assorted seasonal clothing. I won't throw books away, since I have a hefty collection, so I bin them and store them, out of sight and out of mind. I've been following the Japanese Minimalist model for some time now, harmonizing my spaces, so that everything has a function and that I enjoy looking at my space, as well as being IN that space. Also Seve at Sunny Kind Journey is also one of my inspirations I follow. Along with you. I did a refresh reno during the holidays, painting/repairing. We only have two closets to work with, so I have to be creative with what I keep. And the 6 month rule always applies, on top of harmonizing our great room and bedroom. Now with both spaces cleaned, painted and harmonized, the clutter has been "cleansed." When one does not have much space to keep "Stuff" the minimalist lifestyle becomes apparent, if you don't want to live like a hoarder, right ?? Simple repair jobs, that I can handle, I do myself, since there is a Canadian Tire in the mall up the street. Anything beyond my capabilities I put a request ticket into our resident portal and someone comes to do that for me. I also do work for the seniors in my building when I can, so my tool set is able to handle most jobs, outside of major repairs or appliances.
Thanks so much for the detailed explanation of your process! And a big congrats on finishing your big cleanse. I know exactly what a big process this can be.
