Nick's Projects
United Kingdom
Приєднався 8 чер 2016
Hi, I'm Nick. I'm by no means a professional installer, repairer or builder of any kind. This said, I do enjoy a bit of DIY and usually get some pretty decent results. :o)
My films show a wide variety of projects that usually step slightly outside of the normal stuff, delivering serious enhancements to my vehicles or making lasting repairs etc. Each video is different, there's no common theme, just expect a video for pretty much any job I decide to tackle!
Hopefully you'll find my films clear to follow and useful if you're planning similar projects too. I love this stuff. If you're reading this, I guess you do too....

This was a really successful project, adding a subwoofer and two rear speakers to my Autotrail Tribute T669 using a really discreet, tidy method that delivers outstanding audio both when parked up and on the road. Переглядів 19 тис.4 роки тому
This video takes you through my method of installing 240v off-grid power for sockets and a microwave in my campervan. I used a 1500w inverter, a 75ah 12v leisure battery and a rotary switch allowing me to switch all sockets and the microwave between hook-up power and the inverter feed. It works flawlessly. Do it! A serious upgrade for any camper, motorhome, boat , caravan or car. :o) See links ...

I've had this working faultlessly and it's proving a significant upgrade to my whole driving experience in the car. There is...
Volvo XC60 Reversing and front Camera Update
Переглядів 41 тис.8 років тому
This is just a quick update to the original film having enjoyed living with the twin camera system, without issues, for over 6 months. It shows a few tips and tricks using the Volvotech system as well as asking for your thoughts on my next XC60 project. Sadly the Volvotech site seems to be down at present. Sadly this may mean the Volvotech VBB8 system is no longer available. If you have any inf...
Volvo XC60 Front and Reversing Camera Install With Volvotech Kit
Переглядів 343 тис.8 років тому
My buddy filmed me installing this Volvotech XC60 front and rear reversing camera kit in my 2014 Volvo XC60. It allows you to add up to three external video sources as well as the reversing camera. It will even display moving steering guides when in reverse. This walk-through is a long film, but if you're considering doing this, it'll save you a whole ton of time. It took me 12 hours all in. If...
Brilliant video thank you
funny how you have not shown any pictures of the UNVENTED cylinder installation which i’m sure you will know req building regs compliance
It’s in the eaves of our loft space and was professionally fitted. They added timber supports across the joists. The expansion vessel is next to it and both are covered by the annual service. 👍
I am glad this worked out for you, but the big problem is that unfortunately the modern gas fitter likes to be called a heating engineer, and gets upset if not treated like a brain surgeon. I bought a NEW boiler 2 years ago and have been led up the garden path by three installers who have either strung me along going through the book of excuses as to why they failed to come and do the install which is a straight like for like heat only boiler with no complicated tanks or pumps which I could do myself but not legally, and wasted a complete summer, or just said they would come and have a look and then failed to turn up.I don't expect any kind of guarantee I just want to pay a fair price for a fair days work but the problem is the modern tradesman has got greedy and wants to supply the materials and charge twice what they paid for them and charge rip off rates for their labour.
I contacted 15 different installers and only 3 were even interested in taking on the job. Luckily, the guy I found was reliable and extremely professional. I don’t think it’s worth the time of many installers to face potential complications, but I made it clear from the outset that I was happy to pay for spares as required during the install to ensure they could complete the job. I won’t lie, finding an open minded Installer was probably the hardest bit!
I own a gas company in Central London. I'm 55 and can see you are a moany old man that thinks he knows it all. No wonder no one took you seriously. Got greedy? Do you even know what it cost's us to be Gas Engineers? We do not need customers like you. Only the most desperate engineers would do work for you. Supply materials at twice the cost? Stop making things up. Go and do it yourself. We don't install 2nd hand stuff cause it might not work. Then we have to speak to a non beliveing customer like you to try and explain there are more charges to fix it.
Hi Nick, thank you for this video, I've been puzzled by some old UPVC doors for ages and had a similar experience with the local UPVC doctor. This is a really helpful guide. Plus it is -2oC outside and the doors are on our sitting room leaking air like mad.
I’ve had to adjust mine once since I did this, but it only took me about 10 minutes. Definitely worth replacing the hinges as there are adjustments to tighten the seal on the door as well. Good luck if you decide to go for it!
Just a tip, put the car year in the title or at least the description, that would help people out when they are searching
I would have updated a lot more about this video, but sadly I no longer own the car and the manufacturer that made this unit seems to have disappeared. There are similar products still available, I just haven’t been able to test or install them so can’t really vouch for them. Next time though… I will add model year and details I promise. 😉
Awesome, just what I was looking for.
Glad I could help!
Lifesaver Well Done .....
@41:20 Those are not LEDs on the KEY1 and KEY2 wires, they're just blue rubber caps to prevent shorting the wire which you can pull off if you decide to connect these wires to your steering wheel controls..
Great Job 🎉
Thank you! 😁
Got similar quotes of £350 to replace 3 hinges myself, they cost a tenner each online! and as you showed minutes to install. Even if it took an 3 hours still better to try it yourself. I am surprised however the butt hinges give issues since most doors upvc/composite come with them including my front door, they really should put much higher quality and stronger hinges in first place to avoid this sort of stress and headache. In future I will try and get better hinges on the doors.
Thanks a lot for the video. My problem is different, I just wanted to know if I could move the existing hinges and I got the info I needed from your video. Thanks
Excellent video
Cheers
Glad it was of help!
Thank you, very much appreciated.
Thanks, a lot. No idea how to take the door off/adjust the hinge. Problem sorted 👍
That’s cheap for fitting tho
I think the time has come for me to do this to my rear UPVC doors as, like you, they are completely out of adjustment. Thanks for making this video; I found it extremely helpful and informative.
Very good
Just DIY tip when offering up your door for marking, stick packets in the rebate of the door, then put your door in place,.Then mark the position of the hinges. Afterwards you can remove the packers
See you completely ignored EN1717 CAT5 requirements for the water supply that are designed to stop contaminated water getting back into your drinking water supply in the house. Hope you’ve not got sick from your toilet seat.
Only comment worth reading but 99% will not understand or know the ramifications 😢
You do realize this style of toilets is virtually everywhere in asian countries like Japan or South Korea without crazy UK rules of separate air-gapped water supply, yet you don't see bodies piling on streets there suffering from these proclaimed water contamination problems? Is it that the UK is located in a different world with different laws of physics that here it suddenly becomes a huge problem?
@@MikeRI170 I think they use separate water pipes for sinks and toilets in Japan. Rate of illness/contamination might be higher in SK due to these. Do these bidets prevent backflow at all?
I can't even open the door to get to the hinges
Hello im your subscriber i just want to know how is the electric bidet because i just order mine recently is it still working?
Hi, it still works perfectly. Thanks for the sub. :o)
Good to see another of your videos Nick, you had gone very quiet over the past few years 😂
This is actually an old one. Work just got too busy, but I’m determined to get back into it. 😁
For the adjustment section of the flag hinges alone - much appreciated!
👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
I have a question about a door that I have that has different types of interior hinges and wonder if the door can be taken off and the hinges heightened....
Spot on! You have just done exactly what I will be doing.
Thank u 👏👏🙏🙏🙏
Very nice job. Just want to point out that a 600 watt output power (cooking power) microwave typically requires 900 - 975 watts input power. So perhaps more like around 45 to 50 min of run time. Also most vehicles have an accessory position on the key which doesn't operate fans, etc. But a separate auxiliary radio on/off switch would be a nice conveyance.
Great vid. Shame both sites dont sell them anymore.
Thank you for the video. Amazing! Will save me a lot of time and tears-
Hi nick, is havjng the socket there legal? Is it not supposed to be 3m away from sink / shower or bath?
Great video, I have 2018 XC60 with a failed reverse camera so just have to replace it, can this be done by just removing the handle and reg light assembly unplug and plug in? TIA
you ask for a local double glazing to fix front door hinge and they will tell you change the whole thing for money you dont have. Hardly any honest tradesmen left nowadays.
The way this has been installed is unsafe as there's no backflow prevention valve on the water inlet, which can lead to contamination of your drinking water with the toilet water and fecal matter. See WRAS compliance..
I’ve installed two of these now in our home and the installation instructions do not refer to this. There’s probably the appropriate valve fitted within the system.
Does it use the existing cistern to flush or is it made redundant?
The cistern still operates the flush and works completely separately from this unit.
do the cameras also function as a dashcam and record ?
I’m afraid I’ve since sold this car. But no, this unit does not offer recording capability.
Dear Nick, I‘ve just saw your two videos regarding the installations of the rear and front camera as well as the one for the Apple Car Player. I‘ve the same Volvo as you just from the year 2010 and would be interested on these two products but I don‘t know where to buy them and from which manufacture they are. That‘s why I hope that you read my message and help me on this where to get these products online. Did you bought them in the UK? I‘ve also an other question regarding the Apple Car Player. When this is connected, may I still use my GPS Car System (there’s a box to load the maps DVD’s) that came with the car when I bought it or has the Apple Car Player its own maps? When I use a USB audio Device with my mp3‘s saved on it, can I select/choose the albums to play or is it just playing automatically without have the possibility to scroll between the albums folders or titles? How do the display shows and how to change to USB Device to listening to the music, using the AUX button in the car or would I be able to choose between AUX and USB? I found a completely Apple Car Player that could interest you too, and it fits all Volvo‘s XC60 from 2009-2017. I would be great to have a video for this installation too. Here‘s the link where I found this new screen: shoptfb.com/products/volvo-xc60-android-replacement-screen?_pos=1&_sid=e082af108&_ss=r&variant=40790117515449 With the hope you will see my message and that I get an reply from you soon. Many thanks in advance and best regards, Carlos from Luxembourg P.S.: Your videos are really helpful for someone that is not a professional like me, give you 5 * for your patience to realise such long videos to show how to do it at home 👍👍👍😊
Can I just say what a great video, well explained too. The wind caught our door an broke the plastic on the side where the hinges fasten . So been looking to find out how I can fix it without costing the earth
Thanks for your videos, as we are looking to upgrade our 2017 AT tribute radio media console. Does your system allow to install individual apps such as co-pilot and park4night?
Genius...well done. I love this idea. 👍
How is it holding up?
We actually have 2 now! Working perfectly still.
Which is the unit have you fitted in? @Nick plan to do couple of things from your video. Fingers crossed
What year is your Volvo XC60? I have a 2013 Volvo XC60
Hi, great video and a great job with the door 😃 Nick, you might have just saved me from utter despair at what to do with my 20+ year old upvc french doors with old style rebatted butt hinges that ave dropped and the hinges have no vertical adjustment (so similar to your originals but with a 'leaf' that sits on the internal rebate of the door). I've had the local repair chap out, we've changed the broken hinges but I'm still stuck with a 5mm gap on one door. So I'm looking into if I can replace the old hinges with a better option. Hopefully to get a few more years out of the doors before I have to swap them out. Some questions... 1) Since fitting have the hinges held true and kept the door in alignment, besides minor adjustment? 2) Does the flag part of the hinges come in different lengths, if so how did you ascertain the correct size? 3) I take it you used the packers in the door frame to ensure the door was sitting square in the frame before marking where to drill the fixings for the flag parts of the hinges? Many thanks
Thanks so much. Glad the video was of help. I found the hinges I describe in this video have worked perfectly well with a really heavy old door. Yes, packers can help and offer more adjustment to the hinges. Since fitting them, I’ve tweaked them a couple of times, as they are fitted to a timber building which does move with extreme heat/wet weather, but they are so much better than those originally fitted.
Well done nick, always a tricky job UPVC door hinges great video👍👍👍
Просмотрел видео на одном дыхании, великолепно. I've watched your video like a blockbuster. Greetings to Southampton from St.Petersburg
Thanks for the update I could not find volvotech from Google search to get the product can you please advise the web site address in order for me to order the kit. Many thanks
Hi there. i know this is an old video but hopefully you remember. At 28.05 ish you connect your permanent live (black wire) direct to the terminal block. Does this not mean that your permanent live from hook up to the changeover switch is not now protected by the RCD? or is the black wire being fed by the RCD? Many thanks.
God, rather you than me tbh, you done so well !
