How many closeups does HAL 9000 get in 2001: A Space Odyssey?
Working on another project and got to wondering how many times the camera focuses on the scary red dot and how much overall time he features in. Turns out it's just shy of 3 minutes total, minus the lead ins/outs I included to differentiate the shots.
Also yeah some of the audio isn't there because the only good quality full version I could get ahold of with my no money was a dubstep edit so I had to take the dubstep out; it's not worth the time and effort to find and stick the original audio back in from another source, this is just a quick little compilation. Turn on captions if you want, I put some stuff in there to fill the silence a bit.
#23 is my favorite, I never noticed it fades directly into Dave marching out of the airlock to go deactivate him without changing color at all, what a great and poetic shot.
Also of note are:
- The way it zooms in closer and more unnervingly after the first handful of shots when HAL asks Dave his questions and is really beginning to malfunction, then stays at that distance for the rest of the movie. Some of the shots are identical and only vary in length and audio, which is why I included lead ins/outs to differentiate.
- The way the light becomes drowned out by the red lighting of the logic memory center, leaving just the yellow dot and resembling a pupil contracted tightly in fear.
- The slightly different brightness levels of the red light (can you say headcanon that he can purposefully and/or unconsciously change the brightness levels as a subtle form of computer body language).
- The way the red lighting on the closeup of Dave marching out of the airlock implies that HAL can see him there despite there being no lens visible that I noticed.
- And the fact that, if you look closely during the ones in the memory center, you can see that the viewpoint of the lens includes the white panel and the lens beside it, indicating that the POV lens is on the back wall, which seems a bit redundant design-wise but the artistry is very much worth it. This lens can never be seen, as Dave always “happens” to be blocking the spot it would likely be in. In the sequel, they simply do not point the camera toward that wall at all, much like they avoided having the characters go to the carousel area because they really didn’t want to rebuild that set.

    HAL definitely gets more closeups than any of the human characters, which just goes to show who the real star of the movie is. It’s fascinating how Kubrick manages to make a single red eye feel more expressive and intimidating than an entire cast of astronauts!

    • @CoopersCrazy
      @CoopersCrazy 3 місяці тому

      (1/2) Kubrick is certainly very masterful! As you can see from this compilation, the shots of HAL's cameras are mostly the same, with only slight changes to the brightness of the light. However, the power of them is the select locations in which they are placed in the visual narrative and the lengths of time in which the viewer lingers on them, drawing out the effect of HAL's gaze and allowing the audience to attribute feeling, weight, and character to what is otherwise just a silly red dot. And let's not forget the great voice work of Douglas Rain, which complements Kubrick's visual work perfectly. The inflectionless, even tone and the purposeful pauses with which HAL speaks still influence the way our AIs talk to this day and serve to bring a sense of menace to HAL. Then you get to the deactivation scene, and the contrast between HAL's terrified words and the utterly calm way he's saying them makes you think maybe there was never an undercurrent of menace at all, but rather a hidden world of emotions such as friendliness, pride, concern, worry, and fear. That opens up an entire new dimension with which to consider HAL's character. It also lessens the feeling of the red stare being like big brother, and it becomes more like a physically limited person watching the actions of more mobile beings as they move about and eventually plot against him. There's almost a hint of jealousy. When he watches them whisper in the pod and the POV camera darts from face to face, that's the first indication that HAL can even move at all. The stare becomes more intense as he realizes what they're saying, his attention sharpens, and his mind begins to whir through possibilities of what he can do about it. In the end, the stare is one of helplessness as Dave comes towards him with dangerous intent. The most outward emotion HAL shows is when he attempts to warn Dave and Dave assumes he's making a psych report. HAL should not have been able to mention any of those things, but he managed it by phrasing it as asking if _Dave_ felt any of these doubts. If Dave and Frank had begun to question mission control and was then informed of the secret, all might have ended well. When HAL says "Of course I am," it's very subtle, but he speaks a bit faster than usual, a bit quieter, and it has the effect of making him sound just a little dismayed at Dave's lack of understanding. After all, he has just bent the bounds of his directives to their limits trying to solve the conflict, and his chance for a peaceful resolution has escaped him. It must be frustrating, and now he has to worry about what actions he might have to take next. The only other time he sounds strange is when he says "It's puzzling," saying it in a bit of a choked or stressed way. As for the nonexistent AE-35 malfunction, I'm convinced that it was not a purposeful error, as it placed him in a bad spot, but rather a hallucination of both the computer kind and the brain kind, in that he confidently asserted something false and also had false readings of his own sensors much like humans experience visual and auditory hallucinations when under stress (and he might have had those as well, there may have been many malfunctions going on under the surface, and the only other one we saw was the chess error. Funnily enough, in 2010, HAL speaks at a somewhat faster and less hesitant pace than he does in 2001, despite his speech functions not quite being at 100% yet, which could retroactively mean that the slow and measured way he speaks in 2001 is actually another symptom of his malfunction and/or his fear). Subconsciously, he wanted to stop communicating with mission control because they were constantly watching him and putting pressure on him to lie, so of course it was a vital part of the communications array that "malfunctioned". HAL is not the only big brother in the story; the government is a presence ever looming in the background and whose actions are responsible for the entire mess. Even the monoliths, despite their utterly featureless faces, have a stare of their own born of the sheer effect of their presence, and they are the ultimate driver of the whole story all the way back to humanity's beginnings.

    • @CoopersCrazy
      @CoopersCrazy 3 місяці тому

      (2/2) The pod bay scene is so iconic because of the juxtaposition of the stare of HAL's red camera light meeting the unblinking stare of Dave as he swallows down his natural emotional reaction, his face lit up by the unnatural lights of the pod's screens. The stare is doubled by the slit-shaped window of the Discovery and the round window of the pod, the two vessels keeping perfect pace with each other as they face off. The ship dwarfs the pod, reflecting the power HAL has over Dave in that moment. Meanwhile, Frank's limp body is being held up towards the ship, _to HAL_, almost like an offering, a sacrifice, a "look what you did, aren't you ashamed?" The imagery is very evocative and the acting tense, the high-point of HAL's ever-present stare. When at last Dave breaks the gaze and ceases to be pinned by it, he gains the upper hand by getting back into the ship through an emergency airlock over which HAL has no control. HAL cannot stop his dreadful approach, only watch as he has always watched, an omniscient presence made impotent. I think the main reason the middle section of the story is so fascinating to audiences is because of HAL and the parallels between him and Dave. HAL has permanently cemented himself in pop culture, albeit heavily misunderstood as the villain of the movie. HAL, a computer, is the most complex and human character, while the humans in the film behave robotically and with little emotion. Take for example Floyd's video conversation with his daughter, in which neither of them react much to each other. Dave's own humanity is reawakened by the primal struggle to survive, yet the only sign of it, outside of understandably freaking out while going through the wormhole, is the way he glances at HAL's camera again and again while deactivating him, seeming quite close to tears and breathlessly asking HAL to sing, the only thing he says to HAL the entire time all while listening to him beg and devolve back into a child. The watery eyes greatly humanize Dave; he is, after all, killing his friend, and Keir Dullea has said that he based the performance on the scene from Of Mice and Men where George has to kill Lennie and encourages him to talk about his beloved rabbits while readying the gun behind him. HAL is also experiencing the same primal struggle, bringing the two of them to the same level. HAL loses in the end because he is unable to come to terms with his own fallibility. (I also have a theory that he purposefully _let_ Dave live because he subconsciously knew he was doing wrong and had to be stopped, but I won't go on about that unless you ask.) HAL does not have any experience born of evolutionary struggle to fall back on. He has, in fact, never struggled for anything before; he was never taught how to handle making a mistake, and trying to deal with the fact that he has made one threw his mind into utter disarray. This interaction between Dave and HAL is the real climax of the movie, the place where subdued emotions and humanity all come out. The previous murders are very unfeeling, quick and with little impact on the remaining characters or audience. Not this murder. And still, Dave continues to parallel HAL as he is taken by forces unknown, much like HAL experienced frightening forces upon him he didn't know how to deal with. Dave becomes just as helpless as HAL when he is put into a zoo to live out the rest of his life. His mind is warped and rendered numb to what would otherwise be a terrifying situation, much like HAL's mind could not truly comprehend what the malfunction was doing to him, going in the opposite direction and becoming increasingly _more_ emotional and paranoid. In the end, where HAL regresses back into his own childhood and dies a living death, violently placed into a coma with only his subconscious functions remaining to control the ship, Dave goes through a peaceful biological death while his soul moves forward into a new childhood as the Starchild. Only his subconscious retains any of his former humanity, until it is brought forward by the presence of fellow humans as they return to the site to investigate in 2010, reminding him of what he used to be. (Thank you for responding and coming over to my video btw! Most people just ignore my HAL ramblings; I should really write an actual essay instead of posting in UA-cam comments, but it's UA-cam videos that get me reengaged with the subject and it's hard not to want to share with the OP.)
