My "chord-melody" arrangement of the Bill Taylor jazz/gospel tune "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free" (the instrumental music for Barry Norman's BBC Film show). Played on a Gibson TG-00 tenor guitar from the 1930s. Tab (in both TEF - Tabledit - and PDF format) available on my patreon site www.patreon.com/mikefloorstand

Sandu - played on 1930s Gibson TG-00
Переглядів 2015 років тому
My arrangement of jazz standard Sandu (composed by trumpeter Clifford Brown). The instrument is a 1930s Gibson TG-00 (acoustic tenor guitar, mahogany b/s and spruce top with sunburst finish), tuned GDAE. Recorded in Movie Maker using a nasty old Logitech usb webcam, the audio is from a Zoom H4n mic connected via USB.
Fishermans Island - Irish Reel on Tenor Banjo
Переглядів 4815 років тому
Video of me playing a popular Irish session reel by Ed Reavy on my standard scale (19-fret) Jedson "Conservatoire" Tenor Banjo. The banjo is fitted with nickel strings (string gauges 11/15/26/40) and a Remo head, and I'm playing with a Graphtech TUSQ pick (0.68mm). Video recorded using a Logitech USB webcam since my laptop webcam is on the blink, the audio is from a Zoom H4n mic attached via USB
Cedars of Lebanon (Irish reel) on 1931 Martin 5-17T Tenor Guitar
Переглядів 1,1 тис.5 років тому
This is me playing a reel composed by Sean Ryan. The tenor guitar I'm playing is a 5 body size which Martin used for Terz 6-string guitars and also tenor guitars like this one. It has a 23-inch scale and I have it tuned GDAE though was probably originally intended for CGDA tuning. I'm using a Tusq Standard 0.68mm pick which seems to have a nice crisp but still warm tone. Recorded with a Zoom H4...
Django Reinhardt's "Nuages" on 10-string Mandolin Banjo

My own arrangement of the Django classic "Nuages", played in the key of F on a 10-string Mandolin Banjo called "Father Jack", tuned CGDAE, which I commissioned from De Faoite Instruments. Under Paris Skies

Here is my arrangement of the tune Under Paris Skies (originally written for the 1951 French film Sous le Ciel de Paris), played in the key of Gm on a fan-fret 10-string banjo mandolin made for me by De Faoite instruments. I'm using a Blue Chip Jazz LG 35 pick and the recording is made with Windows Movie Maker using a Zoom H4n plugged into the USB port for audio and the laptop webcam for visual...
Taran Springwell and Gibson A3 White-face Mandolins
Переглядів 4286 років тому
Recording of the Irish Trad tune Christmas Eve (also known as Tommy Coen's Reel), played first on my new Taran Springwell mandolin and then on my old (1921) Gibson A3 "White-face". I'm using a Hawk "Tonebird 3" 1.2mm plectrum.

An Irish Jig recorded for the mandolincafe.com "Song-A-Week" Social Group. Recorded using Movie Maker with a Zoom H4N mic connected direct into the USB. The mandolin is made by De Faoite Stringed Instruments and I'm using a Stagg "Classic" 0.96mm celluloid (I think) pick which is a little bright but not bad for 20p!
Gibson A3 & De Faoite "Ceol Binn": All Round The Room
Переглядів 3426 років тому
A comparison of two mandolins, first a classic carved top 1921 Gibson A3 "Whiteface", followed by a De Faoite "Ceol Binn" flattop in cedar and mahogany. I'm using a BlueChip Jazz LG 35 for both. The Gibson is strung with D'Addario EJ74 (Phosphor Bronze 40/26/15/11) whereas the De Faoite has a much lighter custom set from Newtone (Phosphor Bronze 30/20/15/10).
Blue Bossa (Arranged for Fingerstyle Guitar)
Переглядів 1736 років тому
My own arrangement of the jazz standard Blue Bossa which was originally composed by Kenny Dorham, for guitar in standard tuning. Played here on the De Faoite "An Fea Caol" Terz guitar (Terz = tuned 3 semitones higher than standard), which I think means I'm playing this in the (approximate!) key of Gm. An Fea Caol is currently (Jan 2018) on a "road trip" among members of the acousticsoundboard.c...

very good
What is the name of this pendulum?
That's quite a Nice Jazz Tone, I think some Clifford Essex Heavy Gauge Flatwound Tenor Guitar Strings would mellow out the sound
Lovely sounding mandolin Joe.
2 Sets of Bahain Guitar strings would rock from NIG Music so 2 sets of N-308 Strings
Mike Floorstand You might wanna try some Savarez Argentine Tenor Banjo Strings (String set 1530) which are IIRC I think they're Copper w/ a Silver Plating so they're not going to be as bright as Bronze. It's more of a Gypsy Jazz sound.
It makes it sound a bit like a Jazz Tenor Guitar, which is actually that John Lawlor sound. John Pearse #450 Strings are great & actually Mandolin Chordology by Gordon Stobee would help.
Great version, great sound!
Very mobile fingers!
Not a tune I've heard before - like it though. Love your seemingly effortless triplets - very smooth!
Thanks Keith, it's worth hunting down Ed Reavy tunes, I've yet to hear one that isn't good, and they're always fun to play!
That's lovely Joe - great sound too!
Thanks Keith! This might be my last recording with audio from the Zoom H4n mic though, it's always been a bit temperamental since upgrading to Windows 10, and it seems to have broken again since installing Clipchamp to finish editing this one!
@@mikefloorstand I remain resolutely attached to Win 7! And my Cakewalk Guitar Tracks DAW is designed for Win 95 - lots of bits dropped off when moving it to Win7 but they were fancy things I never used, mostly because I didn't understand them. One day I'll be forced into this century, but until then.... ;-)
amazing
Wow! Hope they do this again when I visit in September.
Good job mate 👍
👍
Like that very much Joe!

I know this video is from years ago and the account nay be redundant, but I have recently acquired a Windsor ideal model 8, just wondering if you have any knowledge on their history or cost?
Bravo
Yes
Great!
Wow really good.
Nicely done!! Either you are a giant or that banjo is smaller than normal?
Great playing of the tune & good banjo for onstage. You could see pretty well all your shirt right through the instrument...my preference is the fiber skin head, looks like lambskin but easier to tune.
Thanks glad you liked it! I alternate between the clear head and a cowhide one, the clear head shows off the woodwork better (and shirt!)
Hey man. This is awesome)
I love your way to play this beautiful tune ! What is the mandolin you play ?
Thanks much appreciated. This particular mando was made by David White of De Faoite Instruments.
This is excellent!!
Thank you!
Great playing esp lovely, seemingly effortless triplets! Love the Taranmando. :-)
Thanks Keith - I'm calling it a Tarandolin!
Looks and sounds great!!
Thanks Phil :)
Excellent!!
Excellent! This sounds amazing, keep it up!
Thanks, glad you liked it! Look forward to hearing your version ? :)
Mike Floorstand Haha maybe!
Nicely played, the melody is very pleasant. Thumbs up :)
Thanks Jakub glad you liked it :)
beautiful tone....i like the sound of the calf string...did you put it on?
Thank you! Yes I put it on myself, the guys at Oakwood provided a clear plastic head which is also nice as it shows off the wooden rim.
Привет из России. Отличное видео 💪🏼
+Sergey Pen'kov Thanks that means a lot :)
Well played
That was nice
What a beautiful piece Mike, it really works well on mandolin. Regards, Phil
Superb Mike - really enjoyed it and on the mandolin I now own!! Cheers Phil

Thanks Vlad means a lot from you!
Nice playing , I have the exact same banjo I checked out the pictures it is the same to the T . That's pretty awesome seeing i no nothing about it, except that it sounds good.
Cool! we must be twins or something :)
Lovely wistful tune Mike - really brought back memories of my own which tells me its a good piece of music. Regards, Phil
