simply, sensational!
This kind of project deserves better keybed than M-Audio keystation 61.
Well done en nice details here and there. Not sure why you did all that hard work and went with a crappy keybed to safe a few bucks but the idea is fantastic. I had the idea in 2016 of buying the Refaces and put them into 19" racks but I didn't went through with it. Maybe I should. How hard can it be right? :)
Das arme kleine Yamaha! schau meinen Mini Korg Liverpool Musikkanal mit den Teddys an!🎈🎈🎈❤🎹🙄🤔🤗🤗🤗
As a musician and a person randomly clicking UA-cam videos, and a person who owns a reface and also a person who owns a Rhodes, and as a father, a financial advisor, and did I mention a musician, as a person who often repeats himself and is otherwise also redundant, I can honestly say i watched most of this.
Stopped watching after the 3rd ad in less than 10 minutes. Let me know when you're less greedy.
You my friend, have talent. Bravo.
This is really nice. The only thing I would have done differently would be to put that ugly power switch on the back and include some sort of storage compartment for the sustain pedal.
I don't know if I can but if you need to build a road I may help
Great project, breaks my heart you used such cheap keys. You could have bought a used yamaha P-95 or 45 or 35 literally any of them, they have incredibly realistic and hefty weighted keys. Would have probably only cost ya like 50-100 more
Thanks! At the time I made this piano I actually was unaware of that P-series line with the Yamahas. I have since purchased both a P-45 and P-35 and taken both apart, those keys and their mechanisms will be part of a future project. All that said, I have actually been loving the weighted keys on this ‘Rhodes’ - the feel matches exactly what I wanted given the modeled sound of the CP, and now having those P-series keys I still prefer these hand weighted keys for this particular instrument. But I’m looking forward to the future project with those P-series beds!
Oh very cool! I finished watching the video and I must say your final design turned out beautiful - touches of both modern and vintage, very appealing styling. Great job!
A man after my own heart. This is great. I had hoped they would’ve come out with a 64 key Reface by now, but no such luck. I ended up buying a Crumar Seventeen which IMO is the best Rhodes clone to date. They’re using physical modeling, so the hand to key/sound connection is very satisfying and real. They have a decent design for the housing, but nowhere near as cool as yours. Well done
Man, I love both the Rhodes and reface cp, you really sucked me in here. Cool project
Thanks for checking it out!
I think the offcut looks like a wookie.
Nice, well equipped shop.
What a great project! What I don't understand is given the time and work (and skills!) that went into it, why not spend a couple hundred extra bucks on a nice semi weighted keyboard?
Putting a reface in a wood box with a bigger keyboard isn't exactly equivalent to a rhodes
As a former Fender Rhodes 73 owner and general DIY enthusiast your video is inspiring to say the least.
Hey, this is an awesome video. Did you weight the black keys as well?
As a sex worker and professional mermaid this video is perfect for me bro!
This video has inspired me to do a similar thing for my year 12 HSC project, (in australia thats the end of school before university or tafe), thankyou Munstre this is brilliant :)
That’s so cool to hear! I’d really love to see whatever you come up with, please feel free to share when you get into it! Thanks so much for the comment
I was rewatching this video (big fan!) and I had a specific question that I don't think you've addressed in the video: In minute 33 you mention the slats over the speakers in the piano top. Won't those act as comb filters for the speakers? If so: Is the interference negligible when the instrument is in use? I know this is probably just a fun project you built and didn't expect sound design questions on^^ But since you build furniture for studios I wanted to ask whether that is something you maybe considered. Great video still! Love it!
You made a Yamaha CP20.
Would love to see you build something as beautiful as that with a Behringer Solina!
Beautiful work!! I'd love to see the plans for a build like this, please.
Not only is the woodworking beautiful, but the product photography on the website is equally amazing.
Thanks so much for the kind words, and for checking out the build!
Honestly actual build was not what I expected from the title, but it was perfect project to watch, amazing build
Thanks for checking it out!
I love the creepy head turn in the intro! And "will I die if I try?" Fun stuff!
Wow. This came out beautiful. ❤ I think a rackmount conversion plan would be more useful to most people, who might want to be a bit more flexible with their setups.
Thanks so much! That’s a great idea to figure out a rackmount version as well, once I’ve got these boards re-templated in the simplest way I can figure out it’ll be easier to adapt over to a rack version. Thanks for the suggestion!
Did Rhodes get after you for the original title?
Nah definitely not! I’ve just been ping-ponging some different title/thumbnail combos because YT seems to have dropped this one from all suggestions and I’m not sure why 🤷♂️ I’ll definitely flip it back to the original at some point
Beautiful work 🎉
Fantastic
Thanks so much for checking it out!
Time is money. You ‘spent’ more time than a real Rhodes costs… Easily.
Please do create the some plans. I would love to make one of these. Beautiful!!
Thanks for the feedback! Still working on plans over here, it’s a tricky one to simplify and has required me to open up another CP to retake a few measurements and all that. I’ll get them together at some point though
Genius👌
Can can you
Love the color commentary - 4:05 had me rolling hahaha
It would be really cool to build an all in one midi DAW computer system. Excellent wood working there. 😀
that intro is unnecessarily cinematic, and i love it
Good work ! Congratulations 👍🏻
Amazing build, well done, that grill is next level.
Incredible work
Were you also able to weight the black keys without removing them? I couldn't really tell from the video where you were able to insert the weights for them.
I actually didn’t weight the Black keys as they weren’t as accessible, but I found that they didn’t require extra weight because of their much shorter length and overall travel… so they ended up feeling surprisingly balanced against these newly weighted White keys
@Munstre good to know! Been wanting to put weights on my Keystation as well. Thanks for the response!
This feels like Archer or Bob from Bob's Burgers narrating the build, that's awesome! 😄
Nailed it 👌 looking forward to the building plans and instructions... 🛠
I started watching thinking that it looked interesting and read a few comments from people moaning that a real rhodes wasn't being made but i myself actually preferred this method, as some iteration of it could be made by a less skilled person for not too much outlay. Inspiring.
Thanks so much! Haha yeah I was surprised by some of the irritated comments that this wasn’t an actual Rhodes, to me this is it’s own instrument that is quite close to a Rhodes and doesn’t come with the added maintenance of tunings and other electronic issues that vintage Rhodes pianos often have
Love this, did you add weights to the black keys too?
This is incredible and absolutely beautiful work. Wow!
Nice build! But why no fancy pedal?
Perfection! Even in my wildest dreams I couldn't have thought up such a masterful build. Plus, I have none of those cool woodworking tools. I did try a similar project to your side panels though. I have a '51 Chevy pickup and the original upper door cards were made of a hardiboard that warp over time. I tried making a thicker panel using ipe (I'll be doing the wood bed using ipe and cumaru decking boards). I had to special order a 12" x 36" ipe board that had been planed to 3/8". I hand cut it to shape and hollowed out the inside which makes room for the door release lever and window crank. I would have preferred a thicker board but too thick and I wouldn't have been able to attach the handles. Unfortunately, it proved to be not thick enough and the boards had to flex too much and they cracked. Working with wood is really difficult, especially hardwoods. It is a gift to have a vision and be able to execute it flawlessly.
Thanks so much for checking out the video, and the kind words!
Great song. Amazing build. You have excellent taste and skill sir.
