      Seems that way but you really have a ton of control of their lower body and can attack very quickly. They can push on your top leg but can’t escape before they’re forced to tap. Try it and let me know.

      Get those foot grips and slide down. They’ll be really confused, maybe cling harder or maybe let go. Either way you’re not being choked.

    Is he going to hit a forward roll when you take the hand off his hips?

    • @bjjblackbelttodd
      @bjjblackbelttodd Місяць тому

      Could've sworn I replied. Anyway, so, this is also a setup for a sweep to the one armed guillotine. If they do attempt to roll you maintain the chin strap and just help them over with your off hand. You end up on top with a one armed guillotine (two if you reach through and connect hands). However, with this choke, your off hand reach's up and grips the trap muscle on top of the shoulder / neck area. When you turn your wrists up and pull your arms apart, your off hand ends up applying a lot of pressure across the top of their back, making any kind of roll nearly impossible. Just try it a couple times, you'll feel it.

    • @JiuJitus1210
      @JiuJitus1210 Місяць тому

      You’ll tap long before you can get the von flu going. I know because that’s exactly what I thought when he did this to me.

    • @bjjblackbelttodd
      @bjjblackbelttodd Місяць тому

      You’d think so but in order to von flue you gotta get under the arm, which is really hard to do when you’re head is trapped.

    • @TrentWalters-wb1fk
      @TrentWalters-wb1fk Місяць тому

      @@bjjblackbelttodd it's like I tell my white belts: if head is on one side and body is on the other don't keep the head wrapped. To be fair you can hold the head in the GI if you're going for the loop choke and can get under but the von flu is actually designed for the head to be trapped.

    • @bjjblackbelttodd
      @bjjblackbelttodd Місяць тому

      The von flue is great against a guillotine grip, not so good against the chin strap. With a guillotine grip the von flue literally traps the hand. The difference is how the head is captured. You literally can't get into a von flue position, even if you attempt a tripod, which you can't because your hips are being held. Plus, the chin strap hand can be removed, negating any possibility of a von flue. Also, this is a great setup for a number of sweeps. Just try it as I'm showing it, I think you'll find that grip very effective, to have any chance your opponent will need to disengage, giving you an opening to sweep or get up. BTW: I don't do this in gi.

    • @bjjblackbelttodd
      @bjjblackbelttodd Місяць тому

      It depends on the individual but in general it takes 5 years of consistent mat time to be somewhat competent (Purple belt maybe). It then takes another 5+ years to be truly competent (Brown or Black belt), then you realize you’ve really only started to understand anything at all about the art.

    • @bjjblackbelttodd
      @bjjblackbelttodd 2 місяці тому

      If they try to re-guard, attack the near side leg. You can heel hook, straight ankle, Mikey lock, etc… think of this side control as an attack platform.
