Hi, we're Ken and Amy, part time explorers trying to make our passion for traveling a full time reality... one Lotto drawing at a time! Follow along with us on our adventures near and far as we share with you the different cultures, sights, and delicacies that we come across!
One night stay at a rustic getaway just an hour away from the city!
Come join me as I spend a night at one of our favorite spots, Steep Ravine! Amy scored on getting us a difficult to get reservation for one of the cabins perched on a bluff overlooking the ocean in Mount Tamalpais State Park, just about an hour north of San Francisco. And when Amy got called into work the day of, I had to take one for the team and fly solo. Lol! It was an amazing time, with great weather, beautiful views, a warm wood burning stove, and topped off with a delicious steak dinner!
Btw, I tried a different style of video this time around by cutting out the narration and using captions instead. Let me know what you think in the comments below!
For reservations:
www.reservecalifornia.com/
Search for “Mount Tamalpais SP”, then click on “S Rav Cabin Area” or “S Rav Camp Area” (for tent camping). IF you score a reservation - CONGRATS! You need to call the number provided in your confirmation email the day of to get the code for the locked gate at the entrance to the park.
Note: the cabins are bare bones, meaning no electricity or running water (although there is potable water dotted throughout the site), so bring your own water and power source. I brought my Jackery 500. You can always go old school and use lanterns/candles for illumination and ambiance! Also, you have to bring your own bedding and sleeping pad, as all there is are wooden platforms to sleep on. Bring a tapestry or sarong to hang in the windows for privacy. There are flushing toilets and sinks in 2 shared bathrooms a short walk away from the cabins and outhouses for the tent sites.

03:09 Settling in

Follow along as I explore one of my favorite camping spots in California. There's something for everyone here - camping, hiking, swimming, fishing, kayaking, mountain biking, or just sitting around at the campsite soaking in all of the beauty that the Lakes Basin has to offer!
Omg Ken, that was a spot I always wanted to be when I lived in Northern California! Gorgeous and great job of showing me what I missed!❤
@barbaravance4654 Thank you Barbara! It's like winning the lottery nabbing a spot here and such a rewarding stay! ❤️
Everything was so satisfying to watch!
@@JenniferWada-v8l Thank you so much for taking the time to watch AND leave a comment! ❤️
Well filmed! Great work, Ken. Would like to see more.
@trungbui598 Thank you for watching and taking the time to leave a comment, Trung! We got more camping content coming as well as a much anticipated trip back to Japan next month!
Beautiful ❤
@vickieturner8699 Thank you for your continued support, Aunt Vickie! ❤️
Another great video, so relaxing….but I’m crazy hungry now🤣
@roninatomi4699 Ron, great to hear from you, and as always, thanks for your continued support! Hope all is well in your world!
Beautiful video, Ken! I never knew those cabins existed! What an awesome little getaway spot!
@LukeInTheWoods Thanks buddy! These little getaways are therapy for my soul!
What did you set on lure for the trout?
@livebrando I used the Berkley Gulp pinched earthworm, and they have worked like a charm for me more than once! Tight lines!
Oh dang love Delica's! Congrats!
Haha! Thanks brutha! Got a CRV too, but not as badass as yours!
Love the contents! Thanks for sharing this Video.
@Kay-4JK Hi Kay, thank you for watching, taking the time out to comment, AND for the Subscribe! It means a lot to us! ❤️
Was that campsite at the beginning of the lake or towards the end more? Thanks!
This spot was located shortly after the lake came into view, coming from the south. Happy camping!
@@thewanderingfoozthank you sir!
Great vid! Bowman is always a great time!
@RogueElement Hey, thanks for watching and dropping a comment! We look forward to checking out more spots in the area!
This is were ill be with my son in my RAM tomorrow. If you're there tomorrow and see a gold ram with a winch with a ugly mf driving say hello y'all 😁
LOL! Well I'm sorry I missed seeing ya! 🤣 Hope you two had a great time! Was it crowded?
@@thewanderingfooz it was very crowded, never seen it so packed. Actually camped up at saw mill lake, Bowman was full
@@Mike-sr6gd Bummer man! Hope you two still had a good time! Maybe I'll see y'all out on the trails!
I have a lifted Star Wagon coming in from Japan in a few weeks and can't wait to start on some adventures!!!! Have fun and be safe!
@krsjames1 Awesome, and congratulations! What year/model? They're great fun! Get ready to turn heads and people stopping you and asking what the heck you're driving!
1995 with a manual transmission, it was repainted so it doesn’t have the decals but it also doesn’t have the fancy Chamonix seats so I guess it’s one of the lower packages. Probably taking the middle row out anyway and do some camper type stuff to it. Also have a Suzuki Every coming to make a micro camper out of. Father and son projects for the Fall 😁
@krsjames1 If you're on Facebook, the Delica groups on there are super helpful and informative. I'm sure many would love to follow your builds. And what a great project for you guys to do together. I'm gonna start camperizing our van this fall also. Wish me luck!
If thats campsite #33 ive stayed at that exact spot, very beautiful 🤙
@KaiMirra 33 is one of our favorite sites! That site just goes on for days. The one in this video is 28(?) - it's right behind/down the hill from the bathroom. It might not sound ideal but it's a great site - very private!
Hi! Loved the video. How did you make a reservation at Sakurajaya? We're going in November!
@shaydaviau2284 Thanks for watching our video! I believe we called them to make a reservation. No fear, the owner speaks English! If you get his mother on the phone, she may be able to do it too. Here's the #: +81 577-57-7565
You’re a friggin inspiration Ken! ❤
Great video Ken. Campsite looked amazing not to mention you caught a fish!
@brandonarnds6117 Thanks Brandon! As you can see, not much has changed since them Team Fugu days! 😅 Hope all is well with you and the fam. Aloha brutha! 🤙
Great video as always, man! I had such a blast on that trip! Beautiful spot, great company, good food. It was fantastic. Can’t wait for our next adventure (t-minus 3 days baby! Wooo!)
@@LukeInTheWoods Ditto, buddy! Y'all keep an eye out for Luke's video of our upcoming paddle-in camping adventure!
Fun stuff! I used to live in Nevada City, and got up to that area a lot. I wish I'd had my Delica then! But better late than never...
Thank you! What year is your Delica? They're not the fastest things (depending on the model), but they sure are fun! Btw - I LOVE Nevada City!
Nice, beautiful lake but the road to get there looks scary!
@vickieturner8699 It wasn't too bad. My van did what she was supposed to do - just a few rookie mistakes on my part. 😅
@@thewanderingfooz My Delica is a 97 L400. It's awesome! And yeah...I lived in Nevada City for 12 years, and used to climb in the Bowman Lake area, as well as Donner Summit. Love that whole area!
@@rangertommy I realize now I'm following your build process on one of the Delica groups on FB! Can't wait to see how it turns out. I'm gonna start work on my conversion once this weather cools down.
Thank you for the great video!! What is the spot at the end of the video where people are jumping off a rope into what looks like cenote?
Thanks for watching! So the sites shown at the end of the video are bits and pieces from our trip through the Yucatan (which I was too lazy to make a video for). The cenote you are referring to is Cenote Oxman, located just outside of Valladolid. The wild guy doing the backflip was my buddy Jamie!
@@thewanderingfooz I give him a 10! The cenote looks amazing! I’ve been researching and it looks like no cenote’s in Las Mujeres, would you agree?
@@chasityrocha2186 LOL! You're correct - no cenotes in Isla Mujeres, but you're surrounded by beautiful blue ocean! 🤙
@@thewanderingfooz yes!! Can’t wait! Thanks for the info!
Subbed. This is my dream car but my partner wanted a brand new car for camping :/
Hello Sef! Well, there is something to be said about the practicality and the amenities that a modern vehicle offers, such as comfort (A/C, smoother ride), reliability/safety, and fuel efficiency. That being said, I've never been a practical person! 😅 Thanks for watching, and we hope your camping vehicle serves you well!
@@thewanderingfooz yeah. We got the new gen ranger xl. I will still get this someday. Looking forward for more episodes 😁
that be funny
Can’t hear the voice over through the music. Sorry.
Actually, we APPRECIATE your feedback! Thank you for taking the time to watch and give us tips to improve on future videos. I sometimes get caught up in the music selection and forget how monotone my voice is and how it can get lost into the background. 😅
We’ve had such good luck with Mitsubishi cars, we are on our eleventh🥳 Can’t wait for you both to take us on your next venture Thank you
Ron! We have a good feeling that this Mitsubishi will treat us well (keeping our fingers crossed!). Good to hear from you, and thank you for your continued support! - Ken
What an awesome introduction to the Bishi Beast! Can’t wait to see more of it!
Thanks man! Looking forward to doing a joint video with you soon!
Thank you for sharing the delicious views of my favorite "home town" .
Thank you for watching, Mikio! I hope we portrayed your home town in the right light. It was a pleasure meeting you during our road trip! You'll definitely have a cameo in our Joshua Tree video in a few weeks, but we included a split second of your van in our latest video, which was just published! Safe travels!
Where is that alley at 10:41??? I looked for it but did not find it.
Visit the Beautiful Islands of the Philippines!
The Philippines islands are definitely on our list of must visit places! 🤙
What a great video… My son and I were there December 2023…. we stayed six nights on Hidalgo Street at Buccaneeros….. we rented a golf cart for the entire stay…. I woke up this morning enjoying a cuppa coffee went on UA-cam and the algorithm pulled up your video….. ❤❤❤❤❤ if I could jump on a plane right now… Lol great vibes…. Shine on ….!!!!
Thank you SO much for watching our video and taking the time out to leave such a nice comment! Reading this is a GREAT start to my day! Cheers! 🤙
Is there just an "open to the public" section of Playa Norte? Or do you pick out beach club to get a spot there?
Everything is open to the public, but the loungers and umbrellas are beach club property. There were plenty of beachgoers that simply laid out their towels and brought their own food/refreshments... and saved a bunch of money. 😅
My wife & camphost at a campground just below the LBR, near Downieville. Our second home. Unrivaled beauty without the Tahoe crowds.
Truly a magical area. Love the campgrounds along the 49/Yuba River. You are a lucky man!
Philip and I took a day trip to Isa Mujeres a couple years ago, when we were staying in Riviera Maya for our honeymoon. Such a beautiful place!!

Amy I don’t blame you for never wanting to leave, what a beautiful Isle ! The food, the beaches look like the best ever. I’ve never seen to many perfect beaches and crystal clear water.
Cool video, may I know how did you book Yarimikkan Ryokan? I checked out the website stated in this video but it seems it only receives booking by phone?

This Great...
Thank you for watching!

Hello, right now I'm on train heading to takayama. Looks interesting onsen in yarimikan, is it open for public? Or limited for guest who stayed in yarimikan? Actually I stay at tokyu stay near JR takayama. Or maybe would you recommend me the place that has an open air public onsen similar with yarimikan? Arigatou!
Yes, Yarmikan is open to the public during the daytime - check their website for specific times. Keep in mind that Yarimikan is about 1.5 hrs away from the bus station in Takayama, which is walking distance from where you're staying. We would recommend a stay at Yarimikan, but you should also stay a night or two in Takayama to enjoy what's there too!
what did you think of the Antique Inn Sumoyashi? You didn't comment on it in your video, Would you recomemend it? I'm thinking about booking the place for authentic ryokan stay! How was the room size?
Sumiyoshi Ryokan was a nice, quaint little place! Nice sized room (we got the one with the private bathroom), 2nd floor, and nice river view. Keep in mind that these old places aren't very well insulated, so it can get cold during the winter! The meals (breakfast was shown in the video) weren't luxurious - very rustic in fact - using locally sourced ingredients and focused on regional cuisine. So if you're looking for a fabulous, multi-course kaiseki meal, you're not going to get it here. That being said, we really enjoyed the food, the hospitality, and the authentic experience this place offered. And its proximity to the historic "old town", restaurants, and the morning market could not be beat! We hope you enjoy your trip, and please let us know how it went!
Wow Ken and Amy. Loved this new video, you guys just keep getting better and better!
That was fantastic! Thanks for sharing, Fooz!
Beautiful photography and videos! Very well done!
Excited to visit Takayama in September!
Excellent! The Hida beef is out of this world, and although we didn't mention it in the video, the Mitarashi Dango (grilled mochi balls dipped in sweet soy glaze) are a must try too! Have a great time!
nice video. which month did you guys visit?
Appreciate the comment! We were in Takayama in early February. Perhaps that's why there were fewer people...? I hear it can get crowded there.
Very good
Thank you for watching! We appreciate the comment!
Disclaimer: I am allergic to crowded places. And maybe there is certain month or week in the post Covid era you can find peaceful times here… But we just paid a visit to Takayama - very disappointed 😢 I cannot believe how many tourists can be packed in the narrow street of the old town. The video could be shot during the Covid era. You will never get the peaceful setting in today’s world. Nothing is beautiful when the street is like packed sardines. Imagine you have to rub shoulders with others to do sake tasting and when you smell hida beef skewers all the time but couldn’t identify where is the end of the line. Thank god we only had one night in Takyama. Kamikochi and Shinhotaka are much more interesting. Btw, it was a weekday and in early November.
Bummer you had such an experience. I guess we were lucky to visit in February - streets were pretty empty, as shown in the video. Of course, as countries ease their COVID restrictions and allow their citizens to venture off again, there's going to be more crowds. And of course, with social media, more and more of these "hidden gems" are going to get more crowded. For example, Ginzan Onsen is on our bucket list, but I'm worried I'm going to be disappointed due to the crowds, and that's IF I can even get a reservation! But whenever we travel, we try to never get our expectations (or set our standards) too high, and if there's any mishap or something just doesn't our way, we roll with it. Or move on to the next location. Happy travels to you. 🤙
